2. India has lost 51 million hectares of Land to degradation between 2015-2019 as per United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)’s first data dashboard.
   • Key Observations–
     • Around 9.45% of India’s landmass has been degraded till 2019, this was around 4.42% in 2015.
     • The total degraded land in India is equivalent to the size of 43 million football pitches, according to the UNCCD.
     • The UNCCD data dashboard revealed that 251.71 million Indians, constituting 18.39% of the country’s population, were exposed to land degradation during the same period.
     • Globally, it was reported that the world lost at least 100 million hectares of healthy and productive land each year from 2015 to 2019.
     • The data is received from 126 parties in their 2022 UNCCD national reports.

3. Aligarh Muslim University has received permission from Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to launch its own satellite.
   • It will be named after AMU’s founder Sir Syed Ahmed Khan
   • It will be a 3U CubeSat type.
   • Objective–
     • To study economic growth in India’s poorest districts
     • Implement image compression technology
     • Test various in-house built sub-systems.

     • It will be the first memorial in Bangladesh to exclusively honour Indian soldiers from the 1971 war.

GDP Forecasts

1. International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released baseline forecast indicating a slowdown in global growth.
   • Key observations–
     • Global Growth Projections:
       • The IMF projects global growth to remain stagnant at 3% in 2023, with a further decline to 2.9% in 2024, which is notably lower than the historical average of 3.8% recorded between 2000 and 2019.
     • Advanced Economies’ Growth:
       • Advanced economies are expected to experience a significant decline in growth, with projections dropping from 2.6% in 2022 to 1.5% in 2023 and 1.4% in 2024.
     • Emerging Markets and Developing Economies:
       • These economies are projected to witness a marginal decrease in growth, dropping from 4.1 percent in 2022 to 4 percent in both 2023 and 2024.
     • Inflation Trends:
       • The IMF expects a gradual decrease in global inflation, projecting a decline from 8.7% in 2022 to 6.9% in 2023 and 5.8% in 2024.
