Ministry of Power Notifies New CAFE Norms For Passenger Vehicles From 2027
- What: Ministry of Power notified new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Norms for passenger vehicles effective from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2032, applying to new passenger vehicles manufactured or imported for sale in India.
- Tell me more:
- Manufacturers must reduce their vehicles’ average fuel consumption to meet stricter CAFE targets. Electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, low-carbon fuels and fuel-saving technologies help manufacturers meet these targets through additional credits.
- Manufacturers exceeding their targets earn credits that can be carried forward, traded, or bought by other manufacturers. Manufacturers selling fewer than 1,000 units annually are exempt from these requirements.
- The fuel-consumption limit will become stricter, falling from 3.996 litres/100 km in 2027-28 to 3.3273 litres/100 km in 2031-32, improving fuel efficiency by around 16.7%. The reference vehicle weight will also rise from 1,082 kg to 1,229 kg.
- The new Carbon Neutrality Factor (CNF) gives manufacturers an additional way to improve CAFE performance by recognising vehicles using ethanol-blended petrol, biofuels and compressed biogas (CBG).
