  1. Indore has become India’s only city to be selected for International Clean Air Catalyst Programme.
      • The project will be operated for five years to purify the city’s air.
      • This new program has been launched by US Agency for International Development and a global consortium of organisations to accelerate clean air solutions in low and middle-income countries.
      • The program will run in Indore and Jakarta (Indonesia) on a pilot basis.
  2. India’s lightest and Pune’s first Metro train has been developed by Titagarh Wagons Ltd, a company based in Titagarh, West Bengal.
      • These ultra-modern metro coaches combine the highest safety standards with modern Italian styling.
      • The train is not only lightweight with an Aluminium body, resulting in low carbon emission and fuel efficiency, but offer the highest safety and convenience features in the trains.
      • The train has been designed and manufactured by Titagarh Wagons’s European subsidiary, Titagarh Firema, which was given the contract for 34 such trains.
      • The train has been rolled out in Italy.
      • It will be delivered to India by December this year.
      • Delivery of all 34 trains is scheduled for March, 2024.
  3. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of India for the “Future Researchers at IITH to Enhance Network Development with Scholarship of Japan (FRIENDSHIP)” Phase 2 project.
      • The purpose of the project is to establish a sustainable platform for academic and industrial collaboration between India and Japan at IIT-Hyderabad.
      • Activities under the project include launching the Japan Desk at IITH, student exchange programmes, supporting collaborative activities with Japanese educational and research institutes, and providing JICA research funds to enhance research and technology development and industrial collaboration between India and Japan.
      • IIT-H and JICA’s collaboration began in 2007.
  4. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has visited India where he affirmed Indo-US collaboration across many verticals.

  1. Ordnance Factory in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu has developed a high-tech, low sound carbine (a light automatic rifle) named ‘TriCa’.
      • This is a lighter and compact weapon with 7.62X39 mm carbine.
      • TriCa is designed for the infantry combat vehicle, helicopter crew and security personnel for operations that call for a compact and relatively powerful individual automatic weapon.

International News

  1. European Space Agency (ESA) has launched world’s first commercial fully reprogrammable satellite named Eutelsat Quantum from French Guiana (South America) on board an Ariane 5 rocket.
      • The satellite has been designed and built by UK.
      • The satellite gives flexibility to the users to tailor-made in real-time after its placement in the orbit. Earlier, satellites couldn’t be repurposed once in orbit.
      • The lifetime of this satellite is 15-years.
      • The satellite can be reprogrammed while orbiting in a fixed position 35,000km (22,000 miles) above the Earth, the Quantum can respond to changing demands for data transmission and secure communications.

  1. RBI has launched the Digital Payments Index (RBI-DPI) for March 2021.
      • The index for March 2021 stands at 270.59.
      • The RBI-DPI index has demonstrated significant growth in the index representing the rapid adoption and deepening of digital payments across the country in recent years. The index series since its inception is as under:

About Digital Payments Index:

    • RBI launched the Digital Payments Index (DPI) in January 2021 to assess the extent of digitization of payments in the country.
    • Base year is 2018 for this index, i.e. DPI score for March 2018 is set at 100.
    • From March 2021, DPI will be published semi-annually.
    • RBI will also create a new self-regulatory organization for payment sector stakeholders.
Additional facts:
• DPI was recommended by Nandan Nilekani committee.
• Parameters of DPI – total 5 which are,

→ (Payment Infrastructure: Supply side factors – 15% weightage)

  1. Canadian pension fund Ontario Municipal Employees’ Retirement System (OMERS) announced its plan to purchase a 19.4% stake in Azure Power Global Ltd (India) for $219 million.
      • OMERS will buy this stake from World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and IFC GIF Investment Co.
      • Azure is the first ever Indian renewable energy company to list its equity shares on the New York Stock Exchange.
  2. SIDBI – TransUnion CIBIL MSME Pulse Report has been released.
      • Lenders have disbursed loans worth ₹9.5 trillion to MSMEs in FY21, 40% higher than ₹6.8 trillion in the previous year.
      • Government interventions like Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) was a major factor in driving this significant surge in credit disbursement to MSMEs.
      • The total commercial lending exposure in India stood at ₹74.36 trillion in March 2021, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 0.6%.
      • Of this, credit exposure to MSMEs stood at ₹20.21 trillion, with a y-o-y growth of 6.6%.
      • CIBIL Rank (CMR) assigns a rank to the MSME based on its credit history data on a scale of 1-10, CMR 1 being the best possible rank and CMR 10 being the riskiest rank.

  2. Mumbai-based visual artist and illustrator Anand Radhakrishnan has won the prestigious Will Eisner Comic Industry Award 2021 — which is claimed as the Oscars of the comic world.
      • He has won for his work in UK-based author Ram V’s graphic novel called ‘Blue In Green‘, published in October 2020.
      • UK-based colourist John Pearson has also won this award.
      • Both of them have won this award in Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (interior art) category.
      • The awards are given at the San Diego Comic-Con International – a comic book convention and non-profit multi-genre entertainment event held annually in San Diego, California, US.
