  1. 40th meeting of the National Capital Region Planning Board was held under the chairmanship of Shri Hardeep Singh Puri (Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs).
      • The minister launched the Combined Reciprocal Common Transport Agreement signed by all NCR States (Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi & UP) for seamless movement of passenger vehicles.
      • Draft Regional Plan-2041 for NCR was also discussed by the Board.
      • There will be single point taxation for all motor cabs/Taxis/Auto rickshaw; all stage carriage buses, all State Transport Undertakings (STUs) of NCR, including city bus services.
      • “Pariman”, a web Geo-Portal for NCR, was also launched. It is developed by NIC for NCR Planning Board for providing help in the Sub-Regional and local planning in NCR.
      • This Geo-Portal covers details of various sectors like Land Use, Transport, Industries, Water, Power, Health, Shelter, Heritage & Tourism, Disaster Management, etc.
  2. Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani, has chaired the National Conference of States/UTs in Kevadiya, Gujarat.
      • Here, she discussed about POSHAN 2.0, Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti.
      • She also exalted the aspirational districts of the country to establish a Poshan Vatika (nutrition garden) during the nutrition month starting from September 1 for the protection of Severe Actual Malnourished (SAM) children.
      • In the POSHAN 2.0 abhiyan, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS)—Anganwadi Services, Supplementary Nutrition Programme, Poshan Abhiyaan, Scheme for Adolescent Girls and National Crèche Scheme were merged.
  3. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with FICCI, have organised the BRICS Film Technologies Symposium on 1-2 September 2021 in virtual format.
      • The Symposium will focus on cinematic technology among BRICS (Brazil-Russia- India- China- South Africa) countries.
      • This is the first edition of this symposium.

State News

  1. Mizoram government has launched an online payment system in transport department offices in the state.
      • The system has been introduced in partnership with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and State Bank of India (SBI).
      • The online payment system unveiled by the transport minister is broadly divided into two components.
        • Vahan – It is for new vehicle registration, permit renewal, issue of duplicate permit, tax payment, issue of special permit, fitness renewal fee, among other vehicle related payments.
        • Sarathi – This platform is for submission of applications such as learner licence, driving licence, conductor licence, licence renewal, change of name, address and photos, duplicate driving licence, conductor licence and updating phone numbers.
  2. Ladakh has announced snow leopard as the state animal of the Union Territory of Ladakh and black-necked crane as the state bird of the UT.
      • Eastern Ladakh is the only known breeding ground for black-necked cranes outside China.
      • The total population of Snow leopards in India 450-500 approx. They are found in J&K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.
      • Black-necked crane are the state bird of J&K, whereas Kashmir stag is the state animal of J&K.
  3. Goa has become the first state in India to offer free water to its citizens w.e.f., September 1.
      • Consumption of up to 16,000 litres will be free of cost for the citizens of Goa.
      • This initiative is under the ‘Save Water to Get Free Water’ scheme.
      • The state has also transferred the small businesses and restaurants from the industrial to commercial segment for water billing, due to which, they would not have to pay water bills for usage of up to 16k litres of water.
      • In 2020, Goa had become the first Har Ghar Jal state. Till now, Goa, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Puducherry have provided the 100% tap water connections under Har Ghar Jal Scheme.
  4. Punjab has launched the ‘Innovation Mission Punjab’ (IMPunjab), a public-private partnership, that brings in global investors and experts to boost start-up ecosystem in the state.
      • Investment, mentorship and market access will be provided to startups under the mission.
      • The mission also encourages Punjabi diasporic community to provide guidance to the start-ups.
      • The State government will provide 10% of the corpus and guarantees up to Rs 10 crore cumulatively to incentivize early investors.
  5. Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla has inaugurated a parliamentary outreach programme for the empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre, Srinagar.
      • Lok Sabha secretariat will make arrangements for capacity-building programmes for representatives of PRIs in the UT.

Defence News

  1. Indian Navy has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for procuring India’s indigenously made naval anti-drone system (NADS) with both “hard kill” and “soft kill capabilities”.
      • BEL has announced its intention to sign similar contracts with the army and the Indian Air Force.
      • Soft Kill feature refers to jamming the hostile drone, while the Hard Kill feature involves a laser-based kill system.
      • The NADS has been developed by the DRDO and manufactured by BEL.
      • The NADS can instantly detect and jam micro drones and use a laser-based kill mechanism to terminate targets.
      • Both the static and mobile versions of NADS will be supplied to the navy shortly.
      • DRDO is also ready to transfer technology to private companies to produce the anti-drone system.
  2. President Ram Nath Kovind will award the President’s Colour to Indian Naval Aviation at a ceremonial parade to be held at INS Hansa, Goa.
      • The President’s Colour is the highest honour bestowed on a military unit in recognition of its exceptional service to the nation.
  3. The Indian Army contingent will participate in a two-week multinational military exercise named ‘ZAPAD 2021’ at Nizhny in Russia for boosting anti-terror cooperation.
      • ZAPAD 2021 is a 13-day exercise and will end on 16 September.
      • A total of 17 countries are participating in the exercise.
      • Participating countries – Mongolia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Russia, India and Belarus.
        • Pakistan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka are observers at the exercise.
      • Zapad is one of the theatre level exercises of Russian armed forces and will focus primarily on operations against terrorists.
      • A contingent of 200 soldiers from India is participating in the exercise.

  1. Rajasthan government has nominated shooter Avani Lekhara as the brand ambassador of the ”Beti Bachao, Beti Padhaocampaign in the state.
      • Shooter Avani Lekhara will be given a cash reward of Rs 3 crore, while javelin throwers Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar will get Rs 2 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively.
      • All three players from Rajasthan have been appointed to the post of assistant conservator of forest in the state forest department.
