  1. Ministry of Textiles has informed that 1500 artisans have been trained in the 63 Samarth training centres, so far.
      • Scheme For Capacity Building In Textile Sector, which was later named as the Samarth scheme, was launched by the Ministry of Textiles during the 12th Five Year Plan.
      • The scheme was launched for a period of three years i.e., from 2017 to 2020 with an estimated budget of 1300 crore.
      • The scheme aims to provide training to the artisans engaged in the textile sector.
  2. Scientists of IIT-Ropar and IIT-Kanpur, and Faculty of Management Studies of Delhi University have developed a living-plant-based air purifier named “Ubreathe Life”.
      • The air purifier increases the air purification process in the indoor spaces.
      • This product is claimed to be the world’s first, state-of-the-art ‘Smart Bio-Filter’ that can make breathing fresh.
      • The novel technology used in this product is ‘Urban Munnar Effect’ along with patent-pending “Breathing Roots” to amplify the phytoremediation process of the plants.
      • The scientists belong to IIT-Ropar’s start-up company, Urban Air Laboratory. The startup is incubated by iHub – AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub) incubator.
      • Located at IIT-Ropar, iHub – AWaDH is a designated incubator of Department of Science and Technology.

  1. ‘Solung’ festival is celebrated by the Adi Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.
      • It is primarily an agro-based festival.
      • This festival is celebrated in the first week of September.
      • The Solung festival is performed after the sowing of seeds and transplantation, to seek future bumper crops.
      • Local women deck up in traditional attires and dance on Ponung songs.
  2. Assam government has decided to rename Rajiv Gandhi National Park, also a Tiger reserve, as Orang National Park.
      • The Orang National Park is located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Darrang and Sonitpur districts and is known for wild animals like Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinos, Pgmy Hog, and wild elephants.
      • The park is also known as the Mini Kaziranga of Assam.
  3. Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha launched Rural Enterprises Acceleration Programme titled ‘Saath’ for Self Help Group (SHG) of women.
      • This Saath initiative will stress on mentoring and market linkages of products created by these women.
      • The J&K administration aims to create 11000 more SHGs in the coming year.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Russian Academy of Sciences and CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa have signed an MoU in the field of marine biology, marine ecology and blue economy.
      • Both of the agencies will collectively research in the Indian Ocean region (beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone of India), Pacific and Polar (Arctic) regions.
      • The MoU will enable Indian and Russian scientists to establish a framework for activity/activities in areas of biological oceanography.
      • It will involve basic, exploratory, and applied scientific research in marine biology, ecology and ecosystem dynamics, microbiota, a study of deep-sea ecosystems, and related sciences.
      • Thus, this MoU will strengthen cooperation in capacity building, human resource development and skill development in the field of marine sciences and technology.
  2. National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has signed an MoU with South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) for Capacity Building on Integrated River Basin Management with a focus on Geospatial Technology in Riverine Ecosystem.
      • Both organizations will work to create an academic platform to engage young students.
      • Also, a research and capacity building hub will be developed to support regional development in the eastern region.
      • SIAIRD will also henceforth be considered as the regional capacity building centre for NMCG in the eastern region.
      • Through the collaboration, both organizations will develop a dedicated GIS application-based river research centre in the eastern and north-eastern region, a digital river library, river museum and online news portal.
      • NMCG is also working with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) to develop river sensitive master plans and urban river management plans.
      • SAIARD Centre for Urban and Built Environment (CUBE) has also collaborated with NIUA to implement all kinds of capacity building activities for addressing climate impact in cities; and collaboratively work towards urban climate resilience.
  3. Department of Animal husbandry and Dairying and Ministry of Rural Development have signed an MoU for strengthening Self-Help Group platform under the National Rural Livelihood Mission.

International News

  1. WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence has been established at Kreuzberg in Berlin, Germany.
      • The hub will monitor the emergence of epidemics across the world and inform member countries about the same for timely action.
      • It is the first of its kind Hub, which is set up by WHO.
      • Germany is providing an initial investment of US $100 million to the Hub.
      • Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, currently Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, has been appointed to lead the WHO Hub.
      • WHO has signed an MoU with Robert Koch Institute, Germany to support the work of the Hub. RKI’s experts will work in the Hub, as part of this MoU.
  2. Sri Lanka has declared food emergency over shortage of food.

      • The report assesses the number of climate-change driven disasters, floods, and heatwaves.
      • These disasters have increased five-fold over the last 50 years.

  4. International Monetary Fund made an allocation of SDR 12.57 billion (equivalent to around USD 17.86 billion at the latest exchange rate) to India.
      • The total SDR holdings of India now stands at SDR 13.66 billion (equivalent to around USD 19.41 billion at the latest exchange rate) as on August 23, 2021.
      • The value of the SDR is based on a basket of five currencies — US dollar, euro, Chinese renminbi, Japanese yen and British pound sterling.
  5. Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has revised the entry age for National Pension System from 65 to 70 years. Now, the age is 18 years to 70 years.
Entry level requirements: -
• Any Indian citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) in the age group of 65-70 years can also join NPS and continue up to the age of 75 years.
• Those subscribers who have closed their NPS accounts have also been permitted to open a new account as per increased age eligibility norms.
NPS’ Investment Modes: -
• The contributions of subscribers are invested by the Pension Funds (chosen by subscribers) in compliance with the investment guidelines for each asset class -- equity, corporate bonds, government securities and alternate assets.
• There are two modes of investments for subscribers – Auto choice and Active choice.
• Under 'Active Choice', a subscriber has more say on allocation of funds across asset classes, while in 'Auto Choice' the funds gets invested in pre-determined proportion as per the age of the subscribers.
• The PF can be changed once per year, whereas the asset allocation can be changed twice.
• The subscriber will be required to utilise at least 40% of the corpus for purchase of annuity and the remaining amount can be withdrawn as lump sum.
For Subscribers Joining beyond 65 years: -
• Subscribers joining the social security scheme beyond the age of 65 years can allocate only 5% of the funds to alternate assets under 'Active Choice'.
• For such subscribers, the exit from NPS is only available after 3 years of joining.
National Pension System from 65 to 70 years
  1. In August 2021, UPI processed 3.55 billion transactions, which is a new milestone for the payment network since its inception.
      • In terms of value, UPI transactions were Rs. 6.39 trillion (US$ 87.47 billion) in August, which is a new high.
  2. Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) has enabled its users to open fixed deposits (FDs) on Google Pay.
      • The deposits in Equitas are covered by a deposit guarantee up to ₹5 lakh per depositor.
      • Customers can earn an interest of up to 6.35% for an FD of one year.

      • He is a part of a select list of 20 honorary members at the IAU.
      • He is the first Indian to become an honorary member of the IAU.
      • Dorje Angchuk works at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bengaluru, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology (DST).
        • Angchuk is the Engineer in charge of the IIA’s Indian Astronomical Observatory in Hanle, Ladakh.
      • This honour recognises those individuals who have significantly contributed to the progress of astronomical research and culture in their country.
