  1. Ministry of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan, has released a special commemorative stamp to mark the 75th anniversary of Mahindra Group.
  2. Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has extended the timeline for the implementation of the Smart Cities Mission to June 2023.
      • The Union government had announced the project for developing 100 cities as “smart” ones in 2015.
      • A minimum of five years is given for a city to be completed; the first 20 cities were selected in January 2016.
      • Under the mission, the government aims to focus on innovative digital technologies interlinked with its ‘Digital India’, providing technology solutions such as surveillance systems to reduce crime and improve safety of residents.
  3. The Central govt had approved the North Eastern State Roads Investment Program in 2011, with the support of Asian Development Bank (ADB).
      • The scheme envisaged to construct/upgrade a total of 433.42 km-long stretch along 6 North-eastern states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.
      • The project is expected to be completed by 2022.
      • Centre has also established a dedicated North-East Desk in the central government to improve infrastructure and promote industry.
      • Under-construction Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail project with an investment of Rs 972 crore would promote exports.
  4. At an Investment Promotion Summit in Agartala (Tripura), Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has announced that the Centre is planning to establish rubber plantations on a total of 2 lakh hectares in the N-E states over 5 years.
      • Thus, the N-E region will emerge as a hub for rubber production.
      • The total area under natural rubber in the seven North-Eastern States is around 89 lakh hectares, of which over 60,000 hectares are accounted for by Tripura, which was the first non-traditional area in the country to experiment with rubber cultivation.
      • In the N-E, Tripura has the largest area under rubber cultivation at 60,000 hectares, followed by Assam at 58,000 hectares.
      • In India, the state with highest cultivation of natural rubber is Kerala (accounting for 85% of the total production), followed by Tamil Nadu.
  5. National Cadet Corps (NCC) is carrying out a nationwide campaign named ‘Puneet Sagar Abhiyan’ to free seashores/beaches from plastic & other waste materials and increase awareness about importance of keeping the beaches clean.
      • The NCC units at IIT Mumbai, IIT Chennai, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Kozhikode and NIT Puducherry will also participate for suggesting clean technologies for recycle/disposal of the plastic waste.
  6. In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has informed that a proposal has been received from the Chief Justice of India (CJI), NV Ramana, for setting up the National Judicial Infrastructure Authority of India (NJIAI).
      • The NJIAI will be responsible for the developing the functional infrastructure for the Indian court system, besides, identical structures under all the (25) high courts.
      • The authority will have CJI as the patron-in-chief.
      • Till now, the responsibility for developing the judicial infrastructure rests with state govts.

    Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for Development of Infrastructure Facilities for Judiciary:

      • Launched – 1993-94
      • Purpose – Under the scheme, funds are released by the central government for construction of court buildings and residential accommodations for judicial officers of district and subordinate judiciary.
      • Tenure – In July 2021, the Central government has extended the scheme for a further period of five years from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026.
      • Budgetary Outlay – Rs 9000 crore (including central share of Rs 5307 crore)
  7. Ministry of Electronics and IT has released the National Blockchain Strategy 2021.
      • The strategy identifies 44 potential areas where the technology can be used.
      • The strategy also draws contours for developing the National Blockchain Framework. The framework would be a multi-institution approach.
      • Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) will undertake research and development for the National Blockchain Framework addressing various technology challenges and application development and technology handholding.
      • National Informatics Centre (NIC) and National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI) will offer Blockchain-as-a-Service, host the National level Blockchain infrastructure, and undertake development of Applications.
      • Cryptocurrency is out of the scope of this strategy for the time-being. Separately, the govt has notified the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021, which will be tabled in the Parliament’s winter session.

  1. Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has launched a web portal named ‘Hamar Apan Budget’ and a mobile application to allow citizens to give suggestions for the 2022-23 state budget.
  2. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth around ₹18,000 crores in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
      • The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of eleven development projects including the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor (from Eastern Peripheral Expressway Junction to Dehradun) which will be built at a cost of around ₹8300 crore.
      • The corridor will significantly reduce the travel time from Delhi to Dehradun from six hours to around 2.5 hours.
      • It will also have Asia’s largest wildlife elevated corridor (12 kilometres) for unrestricted wildlife movement.
      • Foundation stone for Dehradun – Paonta Sahib (Himachal Pradesh) road project was also laid.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) has signed an MoU with THDC India Ltd, under which it will provide techno-financial expertise in developing renewable energy projects.
      • Under the MoU, IREDA will undertake techno-financial due diligence of renewable energy and energy efficiency and conservation projects for THDCIL.
  2. Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA) has signed an MoU with Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) for providing its techno-financial expertise in developing Renewable Energy projects and fund raising.
      • The two companies are PSUs under Ministry of New & Renewable Energy and Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers respectively.
  3. RailTel and CSC e-Governance Services India Limited have signed an MoU for increasing broadband penetration in rural and semi-urban areas for bridging the digital divide.
      • The CSC e-Governance Services India Limited is a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
      • RailTel has already set up about 200 ‘RailWire Saathi’ kiosks at rural/semi urban railway stations which will now be operated by the Village Level Entrepreneurs of CSC.
  4. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) has signed an MoU with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to fulfil its green energy
      • ONGC and SECI will collaborate and cooperate for undertaking renewable energy projects including solar, wind, solar parks, EV value chain, green hydrogen, storage, etc.
      • It has set a target of producing a minimum of 10 GW of renewable power by 2040.
      • ONGC is first non-American company to be a part of Global Methane Initiative (GMI).

International News

  1. South Korea will get the world’s first floating city by 2025 off the coast of Busan.
      • It will be a ‘flood-proof infrastructure’ that will comprise several man-made islands, aiming to eliminate the risk of flooding by rising with the sea.
      • The floating city will be a self-sufficient city, which is a joint effort by the UN Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habit) and OCEANIX.

  1. Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund has launched India’s first ever Nifty Alpha 50 ETF called the Kotak Nifty Alpha 50 ETF.
      • It is an open-ended ETF scheme that will track Nifty Alpha 50 index and gives investors an opportunity to invest in a well-diversified portfolio of stocks with high Alphas.
      • The NFO is open for subscription till December 15.
  2. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has received a grant of nearly Rs 15 crore from Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) to enhance urban primary healthcare usage across India.
      • The grant is aligned with the ADB-supported USD 300 million (Rs 2,249 crore) Comprehensive Primary Healthcare (CPHC) under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM).
      • In Union Budget 2021-22, the Pradhan Mantri Atmanirbhar Swasth Bharat Yojana (PM-ASBY) was renamed to Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission.

    About the PM – ABHIM:

      • The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) has been approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2021.
      • This scheme is in addition to the National Health Mission.
      • Budget of the Scheme – Rs. 64,180 Cr for six years till 2025-26.
      • Purpose – The measures under the scheme focus on developing capacities of health systems and institutions across the continuum of care at all levels viz. primary, secondary and tertiary and on preparing health systems in responding effectively to the current and future pandemics/disasters.
      • The scheme has two components – Central Sector and Centrally Sponsored. Under both components, the scheme aims to develop healthcare infrastructure.
  3. Paytm Money has launched PMS Marketplace for HNI (High Net-worth Individual) Investors.
      • Paytm Money has launched the marketplace in association with PMS Bazaar, which is a Portfolio Management Services (PMS) advisory start-up.
      • PMS is an investment service offered to HNIs with SEBI mandating a minimum investment of Rs 50 Lakhs.
