      • The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is building two 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at Kakrapar.
      • The NPCIL plans to build sixteen 700 MW PHWRs across the country.

  2. Power Ministry has notified ‘Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023’ to create India’s first domestic regulated carbon market.
      • The scheme is drafted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power.
      • The scheme entails formation of a “National Steering Committee, a technical committee, and an Accredited Carbon Verification Agency.
      • Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) will be the carbon market regulator.
      • The Grid Controller of India will be the registry for the Indian carbon market.
      • Functions of these committees –
        • The steering committee would be responsible for making the regulations, procedures and guidelines for the functioning of the carbon market.
        • The technical committee will be responsible for compliance of the said rules and regulations.
      • The Bureau has entrusted the existing power exchanges for the carbon credit certificate trading.
      • How will it work?
        • Any project or entity which saves on emissions can issue carbon credit against their savings. (One credit is equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide or the equivalent in other greenhouse gases.)
        • These credits can be bought by an entity which is a carbon emitter.

• A carbon credit allows its owner to emit that certain amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases.
• The voluntary carbon credit market in India could touch $200 billion by 2030 from the current $2 billion.

      • An online Training Module on the JJ Act, developed by the Ministry in collaboration with the LBSNAA, Mussoorie was inaugurated and launched on the Karmayogi Igot platform.
        • The module is aimed at sensitization and capacity building of all functionaries who need to be aware of the provisions for child safety, protection and welfare right up to the village level.

  4. Ministry of Women and Child Development has approved a scheme to provide support to minor rape survivors who have been abandoned by their family, often due to pregnancy, and have no other means to support themselves.
      • The “scheme for critical care and support for accessing justice to rape/gang rape survivors or minor girls who get pregnant” will provide shelter, food, safe transportation for court hearings, and legal aid.
      • A fund of ₹74.1 crore has been allocated for the scheme. The financial support to such minor victims will be provided under aegis of the Nirbhaya scheme.
      • This additional support will be available at child care institutions for those up to the age of 18 and thereafter up in aftercare facilities up to the age of 23.

      • The Centre will be used for processing, packaging and shipping of products that customers purchase through the eSARAS Portal and eSARAS mobile App.
      • eSARAS App and Portal and other popular on-ground events like SARAS Melas and Saras Food Festivals are organized under DAY-NRLM for strengthening online marketing support.

  1. World Bank has approved $1.5 billion in financing to accelerate India’s low carbon transition, which includes scaling up of renewable energy supply for reducing costs and improving grid integration.
      • The $1.44 billion loan is from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and is facilitated by a United Kingdom $1 billion backstop aimed at boosting the World Bank’s climate change financing to India.
      • The remaining $56.57 million credit is from the International Development Association (IDA).
      • The financing will help to achieve India’s target of 500 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030 and net zero by 2070.
      • The program will support the successful implementation of the National Green Hydrogen Mission that aims to stimulate $100 billion in private sector investment by 2030.

• In January 2023, India issued its first sovereign green bond. The program will support policy actions for the issuance of $6 billion in sovereign green bonds by 2026.

  1. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved a range of measures in its recently concluded board meeting.
      • Highlights of the meeting-
      • Reduction of listing time to 3 days, down from the previous 6-day period from the date of closure of the issue.
        • Revised IPO listing timeline will be made applicable in two phases – voluntary for all public issues opening on or after September 1, 2023 and mandatory on or after December 1, 2023.
        • It will help the subscribers who were not allotted shares in an initial public offering (IPO) to receive their money back quickly.
      • Tighter disclosure requirements by the Foreign portfolio investors (FPI)
        • This will apply to-
          • FPI holding more than 50% of their Indian equity AUM (asset under management) in a single Indian corporate group.
          • FPIs that individually, or along with their investor group holding more than Rs 25,000 crore of equity AUM in the Indian markets.
          • Exempted entities – government and government-related investors, pension funds and public retail funds and corporate entities
      • Listing of NCDs (non-convertible debentures)
        • Regulations require listed entities having outstanding listed NCDs (as on December 31, 2023) to list their subsequent issuances of NCDs at the stock exchanges.
        • The new norm will come into effect from January 1, 2024.
        • Purpose – facilitating transparency in price discovery of NCDs, better disclosures to investors and the market and to check possible mis-selling of unlisted bonds
      • Sponsor of InvIT (infrastructure investment trust)/ REIT (real estate investment trust) will hold a certain minimum unit holding on a reducing scale for the entire life of the InvIT/ REIT.
        • Presently, SEBI regulations mandate the sponsor to hold a minimum of 15% units for a period of at least three years from the date of listing of units.

      • It has introduced an electronic bank guarantee (e-BG) service to ease traditional paper -based processes.
      • This move will reduce the turn-around time of the bank guarantee issuance and delivery to the beneficiary from an industry average of 3-4 working days to a few minutes.
      • The process of digitisation under Project WAVE was first launched in January 2022.

      • It will now be applicable from Oct. 1, 2023. Earlier it was to be implemented on July 1.
      • In May, the government had said it would only impose 20% tax on overseas spending of above Rs 700,000 through international debit and credit cards in a financial year.

      • The Elephant Whisperers’ won the 2023 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film earlier this year.
      • The Real Elephant Collective was awarded the Mark Shand Award, named in honour of the late founder of Elephant Family. It is an international NGO dedicated to protecting the Asian elephant.
