  1. Minister of Labour and Employment, Bhupendra Yadav, has released the first Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) for April to June 2021.
      • The QES was done by the Labour Bureau under the All-India Quarterly Establishment-based Employment Survey (AQEES).
      • There are two components under AQEES – Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) and Area Frame Establishment Survey (AFES).
      • Area Frame Establishment Survey (AFES) covers the unorganised segment (with less than 10 workers) through a sample survey.
      • Chairman of Expert Group on All India Surveys is Prof. S.P. Mukherjee.
      • The AQEES has been taken up by the Labour Bureau to provide quarterly updates about the employment and related variables of establishments, in both organised and unorganised segments of nine selected sectors, which are: –
        • Manufacturing, Construction, Trade, Transport, Education, Health, Accommodation and Restaurant, IT/ BPO and Financial Services
      • Result: –
        • Total employment in the 9 above-mentioned sectors – 3.8 crores approx. (up from 2.37 crores in sixth Economic Census, 2013-14; reflecting a growth of 29%).
        • Sector having highest employees – Manufacturing (41% employees), Education (22%), and Health (8%).
  2. Chacha Chaudhary has become the mascot of Namami Gange initiative.
      • National Mission for Clean Ganga has partnered with Diamond Toons to develop and distribute comics featuring the mascot to spread awareness.
      • “Ganga ki baat, Chacha Chaudhary ke saath” like public engagement activities will be organized.
      • In 1971, Chacha Chaudhary was created by Pran Kumar Sharma for a magazine named Lotpot.

  1. NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) has just announced its first ‘demand-driven’ communication satellite mission.
      • NSIL is ISRO’s new commercial wing.
      • Under the mission, the NSIL will get its first four-tonne Ku-band communication satellite ‘Gsat-24’ made by ISRO. Gsat-24 will be entirely funded by NSIL.
      • Gsat-24 will be launched by an Ariane-5 rocket belonging to French company Arianespace.
      • Tata Sky will use the capacity of this satellite on a lease basis for meeting its DTH application needs.
      • The NSIL will build, launch, own and operate a satellite to provide its services to committed customers under the demand-driven model.
      • NSIL would acquire three communication satellites — Gsat-20, Gsat-22 and Gsat-24 — which are made by ISRO.
  2. Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 have been notified.
      • ICRA has forecasted that India’s electricity demand is expected to grow 8-8.5% in FY22.
      • The rules aim to empower consumers.
      • Following key areas are covered in the Electricity (Rights of consumers) Rules:
        • Rights of consumers and Obligations of Distribution licensees
        • Release of new connection and modification in existing connection – Consumers should get connections within 7 days in metro cities, 15 days in other cities, and 30 days in rural cities.

  2. Acuité Ratings & Research has become the First Indian Credit Rating Company to join the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), a United Nations-backed initiative that deals with ESG (Environment Social Governance) credit risk.
      • UN has introduced the PRI in 2006 to encourage investors, clients, and asset managers to adopt the PRI principles in their investment-related decision making.
      • PRI principles encompass environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors and promote ESG in the investment-related decision making.
      • PRI has six principles: –
        • Principle 1: We will incorporate ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes.
        • Principle 2: We will be active owners and incorporate ESG issues into our ownership policies and practices.
        • Principle 3: We will seek appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities in which we invest.
        • Principle 4: We will promote acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry.
        • Principle 5: We will work together to enhance our effectiveness in implementing the Principles.
        • Principle 6: We will each report on our activities and progress towards implementing the Principles.
  3. Adani Group entered into a deal with Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) to develop and run the strategic Colombo Port’s Western Container Terminal.
      • Adani Group will have a 51% stake in the port’s Western Container Terminal (WCT).
      • It became the first-ever Indian port operator in Sri Lanka.
      • The terminal is next to a $500-million Chinese-run jetty at the sprawling port in capital Colombo. Thus, it is a strategic deal for India.
