  1. Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2021 has been passed by Parliament.
      • The bill allows tariff determination of a ‘group of airports’ by way of amending the definition of ‘major airport.’
      • The bill amends the provisions of the law in relation to tariffs for single airports.
      • The revenue earned by AAI from these airports will be utilized for the development of airports in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
      • This approach would help in the development of more airports through the PPP route thus, expanding the air connectivity to relatively remote and far-flung areas.
  2. Union government, Central Water Commission, the World Bank and 10 participating states have signed a project worth $250 million for 120 dams.
      • The project aims to strengthen its dams following incidents of glacier bursts and flash floods.
      • The country has around 5000 large dams that play an important role in India’s water security and mitigating floods.
      • The $250 million loan has a maturity of 13 years.
      • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the second and third phases of Rs 10,211 crore Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP) to improve the safety and operational performance of 736 dams across the country.
      • World Bank support to dam safety in India includes the recently closed DRIP-1 ($279 million + $62 million Additional Financing) that improved the safety and sustainable performance of 223 dams in six states of India and one central agency.
  3. Lok Sabha has passed the ‘The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas Bill, 2021’.
      • The bill which seeks to set up a statutory authority with appropriate powers to tackle air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas.
  4. Union Cabinet has approved continuation of Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts for further 2 years (April 2021-March 2023).
      • The scheme was launched in 2019 for setting up 1,023 fast-track special courts (FTSCs) across the country for expeditious disposal of pending rape cases under the Indian penal Code (IPC) and crimes under the POCSO Act.
      • Total Outlay – Rs. 1572.86 crore (Rs.971.70 crore as Central Share and Rs.601.16 crore as State share).
  5. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the school education programme Samagra Shiksha Scheme 2.0 till the 2025-26 financial year.

      • ReNew will supply power generated from renewable sources to RackBank’s hyper-scale data center in India.
      • It will be India’s First Hyper-Scale Data Center with 100% Renewable Energy or India’s First Green Data Centre.
  2. Nano Biotechnology Research Centre (NBRC) has signed an MoU with the IIT-Delhi for research consultancy, knowledge transfer and collaborative projects.
      • NBRC is the research & development unit of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited’s (IFFCO).
      • The MoU will facilitate advanced research in the Area of Nano Technology.
      • IFFCO claims to have created World’s 1st nano urea liquid at IFFCO.
  3. Union Cabinet has approved the MoU between Indian Institute of Space science and Technology (IIST) and The Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands for carrying out the Academic programmes and Research activities involving students and faculty members.
      • The MoU will allow students of both institutions to pursue their UG / PG at the other institution. Also, faculty member will offer courses in the partner institute, for which the course contents will be developed jointly.
      • Internships will also be provided to the students of both institutions.

International News

  1. India has joined the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) as Associate Observer.
      • The CPLP, also known as the Lusophone Commonwealth, is an international organization and political association of Lusophone nations across four continents, where Portuguese is an official language.
      • It was officially launched on 1996 at the Lisbon Constitutive Summit.
      • It has nine member states are Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe.
  2. Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) has been joined by 25 countries and 7 international organisations as members.
      • Bangladesh is the latest entrant.
      • CDRI was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.

Banking & Economy

  1. GyanDhan (India’s first education financing platform) has received an NBFC license from the RBI and it aims to disburse Rs 650 crore worth of education loans in FY22.
      • Out of this, Rs 50 crore will be for domestic short-term courses offered by various ed-tech players and coaching institutes.
  2. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to provide Unified Payments Interface (UPI) AUTOPAY facility to its customers.
      • Customers can enable the UPI AUTOPAY feature on their favoured UPI apps such as Paytm, BHIM etc.
  3. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan of USD 112 million to support financially the water supply infrastructure projects in Jharkhand.
      • Total budget is USD 160 million, out of which USD 48 million will be granted by the state government.
      • Around 940 km of water distribution network will be established which will supply water to 115,000 houses.
      • The project is expected to be completed in 2028.
