  1. Dark patterns, also known as deceptive patterns, is the term used to describe the ways in which websites or apps make their users do things that the users do not intend to do or would not otherwise do, as well as to discourage user behaviour that is not beneficial for the companies.
      • The term was coined by Harry Brignull, a London-based user experience (UX) designer, in 2010.
      • Central government has taken a notice of it and set up a 17-member task force to prepare guidelines to protect consumers.
      • The Ministry has started classifying complaints received on the National Consumer Helpline 1915 to compile information on dark patterns, which can be used by the Central Consumer Protection Authority to initiate action under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
      • The Consumer Affairs Ministry has identified nine types of dark patterns being used by e-commerce companies. Most of these are also listed on deceptive.design.

  1. Scientists from Bangladesh and Mauritius embarked on board India’s ocean research vessel ‘Sagar Nidhi’ to participate in a joint ocean expedition spanning nearly 35 days.
      • Sagar Nidhi is an ice-strengthened multidisciplinary vessel operated by the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai.
      • The joint ocean expedition is conducted by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
      • The expedition is an outcome of the maiden CSC Oceanographers and Hydrographers conference held at Goa and Hyderabad in November 2022.
      • The Earth Sciences Ministry has at present six ships— Sagar Nidhi, Sagar Manjusha, Sagar Kanya, Sagar Sampada, Sagar Tara & Sagar Anveshika — which are used for several ocean studies and applications, including ocean observation.

  2. Union Ministry of Home Affairs has launched a “Scheme for Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services in the States” for strengthening fire services in the states with a total outlay of 5,000 crores.
      • The allocation of Preparedness and Capacity Building Funding Window has been earmarked under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
      • An amount of Rs. 500 crores, out of the total outlay, has been kept for incentivizing the States based on their legal and infrastructure-based reforms.
      • For seeking funds for the projects under the scheme, the concerned State Governments shall have to contribute 25% (except for the North-Eastern and Himalayan (NEH) States which shall contribute 10%) of total cost of such projects / proposals from their budgetary resources.

      • Under the scheme, it has been decided to constitute forest rights cells at the tehsil and district level with human resources to ensure and assist in the effective implementation of FRA, 2006.
      • The state is home to 62 types of tribes, 13 of which are categorised as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

  1. According to a new study published in the journal JAMA Network, India saw the highest number of childhood diabetes cases and deaths in 2019 in the world.
      • The country also has the highest disability-adjusted life-years (DALY).
        • According to the World Health Organization, one DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.
      • Globally, in 2019, there were 227,580 cases of childhood diabetes, 5,390 deaths and 519,117 DALYs. This represents a 39.4% increase in incident cases since 1990.
      • South Asia had the highest burden of cases of childhood diabetes, childhood diabetes-associated deaths and childhood diabetes-associated DALYs in 2019.

      • This is the 2nd extension granted to Mehta by the government of India. He was appointed as the Solicitor General in 2018. He got his first extension in 2020.

      • The tournament will be held at Kolkata from 3rd August to 3rd September 2023.
      • In this edition, 24 teams will participate in the tournament.
      • The teams of Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh are also taking part in the tournament after a gap of 27 years.
      • The tournament is conducted by the Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) under the aegis of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF).
      • Recently, former Indian goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey was elected as the new president of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF).
