  1. 2nd edition of World’s Largest Virtual FinTech Fest– Global FinTech Fest (GFF) was hosted by India for 28-30 September.
      • India’s Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman was the Chief Guest at the fest.
      • Theme – FinTech: Empowering a Global Digital Economy
      • Organizer – National Payments Council of India (NPCI) and Fintech Convergence Council (FCC) of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
      • NPCI has partnered Yes Bank to launch RuPay On-the-Go to allow customers to make small and large value transactions using daily wear accessories.
      • The Rupay On-the-Go enables customers to pay up to Rs 5000 without putting their PINs via their PoS enabled accessories.

      • The panel will recommend measures to use IT tools effectively to minimise tax evasion and make compliance easier for taxpayers.
  3. Ministry of Coal has constituted a panel, chaired by Ms. Nirupama Kotru (Joint Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry), to review and benchmark the timelines in project execution.
      • The committee will review tenders of PSUs, which have a value of more than Rs 300 crore.
      • It will recommend a robust and efficient set of timelines and whether statutory clearances may be obtained prior to issuing tender.
      • Coal India alone accounts for over 80% of domestic coal production.
      • The company wants to achieve 1 billion tonnes of production target by 2023-24.
  4. Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) mobile application was launched on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October).
      • Purpose – The mobile app will contain information on the progress achieved under the mission. It will also spread awareness about the Jal Jeevan Mission.
      • Other initiative launched – The Rashtriya Jal Jeevan Kosh was also launched to encourage citizens and NRIs to donate money for the Jal Jeevan Scheme.
        • RJJK is a registered public charitable trust set up by Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
      • The audit of RJJK account will be carried out annually by an independent auditor from a panel of auditors empanelled with Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).
      • Donors will be eligible for a 50% deduction under section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  5. Additional Facts:

      • The progress report of the JJM and a manual for the utilisation of the 15th Finance Commission grant for rural local bodies were also released.
      • At the time of launch of the Jal Jeevan mission, only 3.23 crore (or 17%) rural households had tap water supply.
      • After the launch of JJM in 2019, more than 5 crore rural households have been provided with tap water connections.
  6. Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, launched ‘Wetlands of India Portal’ (https://indianwetlands.in/) to provide information related to wetlands of the country.
      • Dashboard – A dashboard for each State and UT has been developed on this portal to provide state-wise information about the wetlands.
      • Citizen Participation – Citizens can register themselves and mention their interested wetland to offer their services. State / UT govts can contact these citizens for their voluntary services.
      • International Collaboration – The portal has been developed under a Technical Cooperation project “Wetlands Management for Biodiversity and Climate Protection” of the Environment Ministry, in partnership with GIZ GmbH, German company.
        • The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
        • International Climate Initiative (IKI) is the project of Germany’s Federal Ministry to help developing countries in their environment-friendly projects.
  7. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented Dare to Dream 2.0 awards and Young Scientists Awards.
      • The awards were presented during the DRDO Director’s Conclave. The theme of the event was redesigning the processes to meet the national aspirations.
      • Dare to Dream 2.0 is DRDO’s pan-India contest to promote Indian academicians, individuals and start-ups to develop emerging defence and aerospace technologies/systems.
      • DRDO provides technical and financial support to the winners for realisation of their ideas under the Technology Development Fund scheme.
      • Dare to dream 2.0 awards were given to 40 winners – 22 in individual category and 18 in start-up category.
      • 16 DRDO scientists under the age of 35 were awarded young scientists awards for their contribution in areas of their expertise.
      • Dare to Dream 3.0 was launched during the event.
  8. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Azadi@75New Urban India: Transforming Urban Landscape’ Conference-cum-Expo at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
      • Exhibition on ‘New Urban India’ was held for showcasing the achievements and future projections of the transformative Urban Missions.
      • Exhibition on 75 Innovative Construction Technologies, named ‘Indian Housing Technology Mela’ (IHTM), under Global Housing Technology Challenge-India (GHTC-India), was also held.
      • Exhibition to showcase performance of Uttar Pradesh after 2017 was held on the theme of UP@75: Transforming Urban Landscape in Uttar Pradesh.

  1. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched ‘Mission Basundhara’ for streamlining land revenue services and facilitating easy access to the public for their land-related work.
      • The mission aims to eliminate the middleman from the system and reduce unnecessary visits to government offices, while empowering the public to resolve land-related issues online in a hassle-free manner.
      • A total of Rs 225 crore will be spent on the implementation of the programme and the mission will enable the rebuilding of all lost land records of the state.
      • Mission Basundhara strives for total digitisation of maps and integration of maps and land records of Assam under Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme.
  2. Bihar govt has launched two new schemes
      • Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyami Yojana – to provide financial assistance to women for starting their own businesses.
        • Women from both upper and backward classes are eligible.
        • Rs 10 lakhs (Rs 5 lakh as grant and Rs 5 lakhs as interest free loan) will be given to help women start their new business enterprise.
        • The loan amount can be paid in various instalments in 7 years from the commencement of the business.
      • Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Yojana – to provide financial assistance to youth for starting their own businesses
        • Unemployed youth will get assistance.
        • Rs 10 lakhs (Rs 5 lakh as grant and Rs 5 lakhs as loan @1% interest) will be given to help them start their new business enterprise.
        • The loan amount can be paid in various instalments in 7 years from the commencement of the business.
      • Both of these schemes are on similar lines of Mukhyamantri SC/ST/EBC Udyami Yojana, which was started in 2018.
  3. World Bank has approved the Meghalaya Health Systems Strengthening Project worth $40 million to improve the quality of health services and strengthen the state’s capacity to handle future health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
      • All 11 districts of the state will benefit from the project.
      • Primary and secondary level healthcare facilities will be improved.
      • The project will enable women to better utilize healthcare services at the community level.
  4. Indo-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IFCCI) has signed an MoU with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to facilitation investments from France into Maharashtra.
      • The Indo-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IFCCI) was established in 1977.
      • IFCCI is a part of the French Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCIFI), which is spread in 120 countries with over 35,000 companies.
      • Headquartered in Mumbai, IFCCI has four other offices in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune.
  5. Tamil Nadu govt has launched Face Recognition Software, a mobile phone application, for state police.
      • The app provides has more than 5.30 lakh photographs and profiles of criminals and anti-socials across the state.
  6. In Assam, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated the Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre in Guwahati.
      • It was a 150 years old residence of the British Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup, the iconic DC Bungalow of Guwahati.

International News

  1. NASA has announced its new ‘Psyche’ mission, to be launched on August 1, 2022 from Kennedy Space Centre, Florida.
      • By 2026-27, Psyche spacecraft will start orbiting the Psyche asteroid.
      • Pysche is the name of an asteroid, located between Mars and Jupitar (in the Asteroid Belt), which was discovered in 1852.
      • This asteroid, as NASA scientists believe, is one of the constituents of the formation of the solar system and belongs to an early planetary body.
      • So, the ‘Psyche’ mission will study the composition of this asteroid and study ancient magnetic fields and neutrons and gamma-ray emissions.
      • This is the first mission to explore an asteroid with a surface comprising of substantial amounts of metal rather than rock or ice.
      • The mission is led by Arizona State University. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is responsible for mission management, operations and navigation.

Banking & Economy

  1. State Bank of India and Indian Navy have launched SBI’s NAV-eCash card, onboard the country’s largest naval aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
      • The card will obviate the difficulties faced by personnel onboard in handling physical cash during deployment of the ship at high seas.
      • NAV-eCash card, with its dual-chip technology, will facilitate both online as well as offline transactions.
      • The concept will be replicated at other naval ships and various defence establishments for creating a secured, convenient and sustainable payment ecosystem.
  2. RBI has given licence to the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL), aka the “Bad Bank”.
      • The Bad Bank will start operations with a total capital of Rs 6,000 crore. Its head office is in Mumbai.
      • It will take over and dispose of the identified stressed assets worth Rs 2 lakh crore of commercial banks.
      • Indian Banks’ Association (CEO Sunil Mehta) has been entrusted with setting up of the bad bank.

  3. RBI has superseded the board of Srei Infrastructure Finance and Srei Equipment Finance due to their governance concerns and payment defaults.
      • RBI has appointed Rajneesh Sharma, former Chief General Manager, Bank of Baroda as the administrator.
      • RBI intends to shortly initiate the process of resolution of the above two NBFCs under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy (Insolvency and Liquidation Proceedings of Financial Service Providers and Application to Adjudicating Authority) Rules, 2019.
