A) Letter of Intent
• Tamil Nadu and Denmark Environmental Protection Agency have signed a Letter of Intent for leveraging technology for the conservation of water bodies and ensuring quality of drinking water.
B) IIT-Madras and Denmark Collaboration
• Four projects will be completed via this collaboration.
• Three out of these four projects were announced to enable energy transition towards a low-carbon future as envisioned by IIT Madras Energy Consortium.
• The fourth project was signed in the realm of Water to promote cooperation in engineering education and scientific research between Danfoss, Denmark and IIT Madras.
    o Both institutions will undertake joint work on drinking water for coastal regions using renewable energy.

      • Project 1 – The $500-million Public Health Systems for Pandemic Preparedness Program (PHSPP) will support efforts to prepare India’s surveillance system to detect and report epidemics of concern.
      • Project 2 – Another $500 million Enhanced Health Service Delivery Program (EHSDP) will support government’s efforts to strengthen service delivery through a redesigned primary healthcare model.

      • This all-India celebration of youth power will be held on three levels. Yuva Utsav will begin with a one-day district-level programme. The first phase of the programme is planned to be held in 150 districts from the 4th to 31st of March 2023.

      • South Korea and USA will conduct the Freedom Shield exercise, a computer-simulated command post training, from March 13 to 23 to strengthen their defense and response capabilities.
      • They will also conduct separate large-scale joint field training exercises called Warrior Shield FTX.
  2. Belarus has sentenced its Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in prison.
      • Ales Bialiatski won Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, along with Russian rights group Memorial and Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties.

  1. ILO and UNICEF have released their second joint report on social protection for children titled as “More than a billion reasons: The urgent need to build universal social protection for children”.
      • The report appraises India’s PM-Cares for Children scheme among other countries and their welfare schemes.
      • As per the report, the PM-Cares for Children scheme has been launched by 31 Indian States and UT. Introduced in March 2020, it aims to support orphan children.
      • So far, 4,302 children have received support from the scheme (as per Supreme Court of India’s data, 2021).
      • Benefits given under PM-Cares for Children –
          • Income support to 18-23 years old – Rs 1 million (US$12,635) corpus
          • Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance scheme coverage for children – Rs 5,00,000 (US$6,153) to orphaned children
          • An annual scholarship of 20,000 rupees (US$246) for each school-age child (from primary to upper secondary school)
      • Eligibility – Children who have lost one or both parents due to Covid-19

  1. World Bank has released the “Women, Business and the Law 2023” report.
      • Indian working women’s pay, and pension do not provide for equality with Indian men, dragging India’s score in a World Bank index on the life cycle of a working woman down to 74.4 out of a possible 100.
      • India scored higher than the 63.7 average for the South Asian region, though lower than Nepal which had the region’s highest score of 80.6.
      • Out of the 190 economies covered in the index, only 14 scored a perfect 100: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
      • India needs to improve laws regarding equal pay for same work. India should consider reforms to improve legal equality for women.
      • To improve on the Pay indicator, India may wish to consider mandating equal remuneration for work of equal value, allowing women to work at night in the same way as men, and allowing women to work in an industrial job in the same way as men.

      • Reason – Sri Lanka’s forex reserves have reduced to just $2.1 billion as of end-January, leading to worsening of the economic crisis of the island nation.

          • The survey seeks qualitative responses from households on price changes (general prices as well as prices of specific product groups) in the 3 months ahead as well as in the 1 year ahead period and quantitative responses on current, three months ahead and one year ahead inflation rates.
      • The Consumer Confidence Survey will also be conducted in 19 cities.
