  1. Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the SAGE (Senior-care Aging Growth Engine) initiative and SAGE portal for elderly persons.
      • On the SAGE portal, elderly people will be able to access all their essential products and services across sectors such as health, housing, care centres, in addition to technological access linked to finances, food and wealth management, and legal guidance, on this one platform.
      • These services will be provided by start-ups on this platform. This will provide entrepreneurship opportunity to start-ups which are interested in working in the field of providing services for elderly care.
      • The Ministry will act as the Facilitator on this platform, enabling the elderly to access the products through these identified start-ups.
      • The start-ups will be selected by an independent screening committee of experts.
      • Each selected startups will be provided with Rs 1 crores (one time equity) to develop innovative care products for elderly people.
      • The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment has disclosed that the govt has set aside an amount of Rs 100 crore for the promotion of the silver economy (economy focusing on elderly people).
      • The SAGE program has been launched on the recommendation of the Empowered Committee on start-ups for the elderly.
      • Also, an allocation of Rs 25 crores has been made for the SAGE project in the current financial year i.e., 2021-22.
    Additional Facts:
      • Senior Citizen Welfare Fund was started in 2016.
      • India’s elderly population is expected to rise from 7.5% in 2001 to almost 12.5% by 2026, and surpass 19.5% by 2050. Therefore, it is an urgent need to create a more robust elder care ecosystem in India.

  1. Indian Navy has decommissioned its oldest Hydrographic Survey Ship, ‘INS Sandhayak’, after 40 years of service, at Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.
      • During its 40 years of service, ‘INS Sandhayak’ undertook over 200 major hydrographic surveys.
      • The ship has also been a part of Op Pawan – assisting the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka in 1987, Op Sarong, Op Rainbow – providing humanitarian assistance post 2004 Tsunami and participated in the maiden joint Indo-US HADR Exercise ‘Tiger-Triumph’.
      • Hydrographic survey assesses the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers for supporting the navigation, marine activities, economic development, defence etc.

      • World Milk Day 2021 was celebrated with a theme focusing on sustainability in the dairy sector along with empowering the environment, nutrition, and socio-economics.
      • Indian National Committee (INC) at IDF represents India at the Federation. The INC, comprising of dairy organizations in India, elected Sodhi to the board.
      • Secretary, Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying (incumbent: Atul Chaturvedi) is the president of the INC-IDF.
      • The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) handles the secretariat of INC-IDF. Chairperson of NDDB is Varsha Joshi.
      • India is world’s largest milk producing country.

  1. World Day Against Speciesism is observed on June 5 by different animal rights organizations.
      • Speciesism is a term used in philosophy regarding the treatment of individuals of different species. This assumption of human superiority leading to the exploitation of animals.
  2. World Environment Day is observed on June 5 by UN.
      • Theme – REIMAGINE. RECREATE. RESTORE.
      • The focus of this day is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.
      • Pakistan will be the global host of the day.
      • UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is being observed from 2021-2030, a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.
      • It is observed on June 5 because the United Nations Conference on the Environment was first held on 5-16 June 1972 in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the first world conference to make the environment a major issue.
      • Events in IndiaMinistry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change jointly organized an event on the theme of ‘promotion of biofuels for a better environment’.
      • Films Division of India organized a two-day online film festival, Oasis of Hope, to mark World Environment Day.

      • 16 teams of men and women each will participate. Per continent, 3 teams are allowed.
      • Qualifier round for this World Cup will begin in 2022.
      • Hockey 5s – new format; involves 5 players per team in a match (4 players + 1 goalkeeper), aims to promote hockey.
