  1. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with National Health Authority, have organized the CoWIN Global Conclave 2021.
      • 50 countries including Canada, Mexico, Nigeria etc. have shown interest in adopting the CoWIN platform for conducting their vaccination drive.
      • CoWIN platform was developed by the Health Ministry for registration, application, and monitoring of the vaccination program.
      • The govt has already made Aarogya Setu as open source. The app helps in tracking the Covid patients.
  2. AIM-iLEAP (Innovative leadership for entrepreneurial agility and profitability) initiative has selected the first cohort of fintech startups.
      • The fintech cohort was concluded through a series of thematic virtual demo days organised by AIM in partnership with Start-up Réseau and Visa as part of AIM-iLEAP initiative.
      • The Fintech cohort consisted of start-ups from a wide range of areas such as payments, international money transfers, personal finance, consumer banking, insurance, neo bank, etc.
      • Future cohorts shall be focussed on different sectors such as Agri-tech, Defence Tech, Smart Mobility, AI and so on.
  3. About the AIM-iLEAP Program:

      • What is AIM-iLEAP? – It is an initiative of NITI Aayog under the Atal Innovation Mission to provide necessary support to the tech-startups in India. For providing that support, AIM has also partnered with Startup Réseau (a leading startup accelerator operator).
        • AIM-iLEAP program allows the technology start-ups to present their solutions to the corporate leadership and innovation team for enabling market access and industry partnerships.
      • Start-ups get the following benefits from the AIM-iLEAP program:
        • Establishing industry credibility
        • Access to enterprise assets of infrastructure, data, partner networks and customers
        • Potential opportunity to earn a POC (Proof of Concept) with participating corporates
        • Attracting investment from attending investors
        • Business Insights during the 4-day bootcamp preceding the demo day
        • Access to extended network of mentors from Startup Reseau’s global network
  4. Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has launched a project on Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to promote open networks.
      • Open networks which are developed on open sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols independent of any specific platform.
      • Quality Council of India is the nodal agency for this project.
      • Also, an Advisory Council has been formed to advise Government regarding the measures required to design and accelerate adoption of ONDC.
      • The members of the Advisory Council include RS Sharma, CEO, National Health Authority, Nandan Nilekani, non-executive Chairman of Infosys and Arvind Gupta, Co-founder and Head, Digital India Foundation.
  5. Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has launched six technology innovation platforms that will focus on the development of technologies for globally competitive manufacturing in India.
      • These platforms will bring all India’s technical resources and the concerned industry on to one platform to identify technology problems faced by domestic Industry and crowdsource solutions for the same.
      • The platforms have been developed by IIT Madras, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT), Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), BHEL and HMT in association with IISc-Bangalore.
  6. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has launched a project named Bamboo Oasis on Lands in Drought (BOLD) from the village NichlaMandwa in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
      • Purpose – to reduce desertification and provide livelihood and multi-disciplinary rural industry support.
      • It has been launched as part of KVIC’s “Khadi Bamboo Festival” to celebrate 75 years of independence “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”.
      • The first of its kind exercise in India seeks to create bamboo-based green patches in arid and semi-arid land zones.
      • Under the project, 5000 saplings of special bamboo species – BambusaTulda and BambusaPolymorpha from Assam – have been planted over 16 acres of vacant arid Gram Panchayat land of village NichlaMandwa.
      • Thus, KVIC has created a world record of planting the highest number of bamboo saplings on a single day at one location.
      • KVIC is set to replicate the Project at Village Dholera in Ahmedabad district in Gujarat and Leh-Ladakh region by August this year.
      • Total 15,000 bamboo saplings will be planted before August 2021.
  7. Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education launched National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat) Program to cover the learning needs of children in the age group of 3 to 9 years (pre-school (balvatika) to class 3).
      • It is in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
      • NIPUN Bharat Mission aims that every child achieves the desired learning competencies in reading, writing and numeracy by the end of Grade 3, by 2026-27.
      • A five-tier implementation mechanism will be set up at the National- State- District- Block- School level in all States and UTs, under the aegis of the centrally sponsored scheme of Samagra Shiksha.
      • Focus areas of the mission:
        • providing access and retaining children in foundational years of schooling
        • teacher capacity building
        • development of high quality and diversified Student and Teacher Resources/Learning Materials
        • tracking the progress of each child in achieving learning outcomes

  1. Norway is developing world’s first tunnel for cruise ships under mountains to help vessels navigate the treacherous Stadhavet Sea.

  1. China has launched the new Fengyun-3E (FY-3E) meteorological satellite from the SLS -2 launch site at China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.
      • The satellite is launched on the Long March-4C carrier rocket.
      • Equipped with 11 remote sensing payloads, the FY-3E is part of the Fengyun-3 series of meteorological satellites.
      • It will provide atmospheric temperature, humidity, and other meteorological related parameters, which will contribute to China’s weather forecast capacity.
      • Also, the FY-3E will monitor the global coverage of snow and ice, sea surface temperature, natural disasters, and many more.
      • The satellite will also survey solar and space environments and their impacts, as well as ionospheric data.

Reports & Indices

  1. Union Education Minister released the Report on United Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2019-20 for School Education in India.
      • It covers more than 1.5 million schools, 8.5 million teachers and 250 million children.
      • It helps measure the education parameters from classes 1 to 12 in government and private schools across India.
Highlights:
• Total Students: In 2019-20, total students in school education from pre-primary to higher secondary have crossed 26.45 crore.
○ This is higher by 42.3 lakh compared to 2018-19.
• Gross Enrolment Ratio:
○ Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) at all levels of school education has improved in 2019-20 compared to 2018-19.
○ Upper Primary Level increased to 89.7% from 87.7%.
○ Elementary Level increased to 97.8% from 96.1%.
○ Secondary Level increased to 77.9% from 76.9%.
○ Higher Secondary Level increased to 51.4% from 50.1%.
○ GER is the number of students enrolled in a given level of education, regardless of age, expressed as a percentage of the official school-age population corresponding to the same level of education.
• Pupil Teacher Ratio: ○ In 2019-20, 96.87 lakh teachers were engaged in school education. This is higher by about 2.57 lakh compared to 2018-19.
○ The Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) has improved at all levels of school education.
• Enrolment of Divyang Students:
○ Enrolment of Divyang students has increased by 6.52% over 2018-19.
• Enrolment of Girls:
○ In 2019-20, enrolment of girls from primary to higher secondary is more than 12.08 crore.
○ This is an increase by 14.08 lakh compared to 2018-19.
• Gender Parity Index:
○ Between 2012-13 and 2019-20, the Gender Parity Index (GPI) at both Secondary and Higher Secondary levels have improved.
○ Improvement of GPI has been most pronounced at the higher secondary level, which has gone up to 1.04 in 2019-20 from 0.97 in 2012-13.
○ Gender Parity Index in primary, secondary and tertiary education is the ratio of the number of female students enrolled at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education to the number of male students in each level.
• Facilities at Schools:
Electricity: More than 80% of schools in India in 2019-20 had functional electricity. This is an improvement of more than 6% over the previous year 2018-19.
Computers: The number of schools having functional computers increased to 5.2 lakh in 2019-20 from 4.7 lakh in 2018-19.
Internet: The number of schools having internet facilities increased to 3.36 lakh in 2019-20 from 2.9 lakh in 2018-19.
Hand Wash Facility: More than 90% of schools in India had hand wash facilities in 2019-20. This is a major improvement as this percentage was only 36.3% in 2012-13.
Medical Check-Ups: More than 82% of schools conducted medical check-ups of students in 2019-20, an increase of more than 4% compared to the previous year 2018-19.
Library/ reading room: More than 84% schools in India had a library/reading room/ reading corner in 2019-20 as compared to 69.2% in 2012-13.

  1. Paytm, in partnership with Aditya Birla Finance Ltd, has launched Postpaid Mini – an extension of its Buy Now, Pay Later service.
      • These are the small-ticket instant loans which will give flexibility to users and also help manage their household expenses to maintain liquidity during the ongoing pandemics.
      • With the launch of Postpaid Mini, the company will offer access to loans ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 1000, in addition to Paytm Postpaid instant credit of up to Rs 60,000.
  2. SIDBI has rolled out various initiatives for MSMEs.
      • 1st Initiative: Lowering of interest rates under TWARIT scheme
        • TWARIT stands for Timely Working Capital Assistance to Revitalise Industries in Times of Corona Crisis
          • This scheme was launched in September 2020 under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS).
          • Under the scheme, SIDBI has reduced the interest rates of credit availed from 8.25% to 6% for its existing customers.
          • The scheme aims to provide credit to Covid-affected MSMEs
          • Loan amount – Rs 25 crores at 6% interest for 4 years + 1 year of moratorium.
          • Loans under the scheme would be sanctioned till September 2021 and it will be disbursed till December 2021 or notification of National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC), whichever is earlier.
  3. 2nd initiative: PRAYAAS scheme
      • Under the PRAYAAS scheme, SIDBI gives loans of up to Rs 5 lakh @13% interest.
      • The corpus of this scheme is Rs 1000 crores
      • Under this scheme, SIDBI is planning to launch a Swavalamban Challenge Fund and a Swavalamban Facilitation Center for handholding and mentoring, and providing credit to micro entrepreneurs in villages and small towns through microfinance institutions.
      • A Swavalamban Chair for MSME Solutions was also launched by SIDBI at the Government Engineering College in Thrissur, Kerala to promote entrepreneurship among students.
  4. 3rd initiative: SIDBI- CIMSME collaboration
      • SIDBI had also collaborated with Confederation of Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (CIMSME) for setting up Swavalamban Suvidha Kendra to provide authentic and comprehensive information to MSMEs and help them in adopting digital technologies / portals of the govt
      • The Kendra will assist MSMEs in Udyam registration (portal for registration of MSMEs) along with the adoption of digital solutions like Udyamimitra portal, Standupmitra portal, PSB Loans in 59 minutes, etc.
  5. 4th initiative: Project Management Units
      • SIDBI has also announced to set up Project Management Units based on the recommendations of the UK Sinha Committee on MSMEs to identify entrepreneurial opportunities for migrant population impacted by Covid.
      • This will be done through rapid profiling in 11 states including Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
      • The inputs are expected to facilitate decisions on entrepreneurial ventures at local/regional levels.

  2. Kuvempu Rashtriya Puraskar has been awarded to renowned Odia poet Dr Rajendra Kishore Panda for the year 2020.
      • The prestigious award carries a cash award of Rs 5 lakh, a silver medal, and a citation.
      • The national award was instituted in memory of late poet laureate Kuvempu (abbreviated form of Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa).
      • Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Trust instituted this national annual literary award in 2013 to recognise litterateurs who had contributed in any language recognised by the Constitution of India.
