National News

  1. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the Scheme For Residential Education For Students In High Schools In Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA), which was announced in December 2021.
      • This scheme was earlier known as ‘Grant-in-Aid To Voluntary And Other Organisations Working For Scheduled Castes’.
      • Objective – to provide qualitative higher education to the SC students in classes 9 to 12; reduce dropout rates; establishing new higher education schools in SC-populated areas
      • Modes of Operation
Mode 1 –
o Students will be selected by district administration under this scheme. Schools will also be selected by the district administration for receiving grants under the scheme.
o Only SC students, with family income less than Rs 2.5 lakhs, will be eligible. Amongst them, students with family income less than Rs 1 lakh or students having physical disability, will be given preference.
o 30% seats will be reserved for girls.
o Each year, 2200 SC students will be selected through an open competitive examination.
o Preference may be given to the Aspirational Districts identified by the NITI Aayog and Educationally Backward Districts and the Districts having SC population larger than National Average of 16.2% (as per Census 2011).
o The grants will be provided for tuition fee and residential charges as required by the school, subject to a ceiling of Rs. 75,000/- per annum per student of class 9 and 10 and Rs. 1,25,000/- per annum per student of class 11 and 12.
o The grants will be released in two equal instalments.
Mode 2 –
o Schools/Hostels run by voluntary and other organisations who are already getting Grant-in-aid will be continued.
o Further, New High Schools (Secondary and Higher Secondary Level) will also be supported after due approval of the Screening Committee.
  1. Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the United Environment Program (UNEP) and Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI), has organized a National Summit on Developing Sustainable and Responsible Tourist Destinations in New Delhi.
      • The Ministry has already launched the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism and the Responsible Traveller Campaign.
      • Ministry of Tourism has till now sanctioned 76 Projects under the ‘Swadesh Darshan Scheme’. In addition to this, the Swadesh Darshan Scheme has been revamped as Swadesh Darshan 2.0.

      • India has achieved the target of 10% ethanol blending in petrol has been achieved 5 months ahead of the November 2022 target. This is a major accomplishment given that blending was hardly 1.5% in 2013-14 and 5% in 2019-20.
      • The LiFE Movement was introduced by the Prime Minister during the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in 2021.
      • Separately, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh governments have announced to impose a ban on single-use plastic from July 2022.
        • Punjab govt has also announced to establish 55 Sewage Treatment Plants across the state.
  4. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandaviya has inaugurated the National Food Laboratory of FSSAI at Raxaul in Bihar.
      • This laboratory has been established under the Indo-Nepal bilateral agreement to reduce the time in the testing of imported food samples brought into Raxaul from Nepal.
  5. India has imported an additional 144 MW of electricity generated by its Kaligandaki hydropower plant in Nepal through its power exchange market.
      • The electricity is being exported to India under the Nepal-India power exchange agreement.
      • The NEA earlier started selling 37.7 MW electricity generated by its 24 MW Trishuli and 15 MW Devighat power plants.
      • Now, Nepal will be selling a total of 178 MW electricity to India through India Energy Exchange Limited (IEX).
  6. 90th Interpol General Assembly will be held in the New Delhi later this year.

  1. World’s largest publisher of Hindu religious texts, Gita Press in Gorakhpur, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
      • Gita Press was founded on April 29, 1923, by Jaydayal Goyandka to spread the knowledge emanating from the Bhagavad Gita.
  2. Rajasthan government has signed an MOU with Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation to save soil “by halting and reversing desertification of fertile lands in the state”.
      • Gujarat has also signed an MOU with the foundation.
      • Save Soil initiative of Isha Foundation
        • Sadhguru’s ‘Save Soil’ initiative is a global movement aimed at soil conservation as 90% of the earth’s agricultural soil is under threat of desertification by 2050.
        • The primary objective of the movement is to urge all nations to mandate a minimum of 3-6% organic content in agricultural soils.

      • Global Plastic Waste is set to almost triple by 2060. Half of it would go to the landfills and less than 1/5th of the total waste will be recycled.
      • Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are going to witness the largest increase in plastic waste.
      • Global collaboration can increase the recycling of plastic waste from 12% to 40%.
  3. New York state legislature has passed the world’s first “right to repair” bill that will require digital electronics manufacturers to make parts, tools, information, and software available to consumers and independent repair shops.
      • The “Fair Repair Act” aims to enforce consumers’ rights to repair and refurbish their purchased goods.
