Ministry of Power Revises Make in India Procurement Norms

• What: The Ministry of Power issued an order, revising the Minimum Local Content (MLC) requirements for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) substations under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) category.

  • High-voltage direct current (HVDC) substations, often called converter stations, are the “engine rooms” of long-distance energy travel.
  • While most of our local power grids run on Alternating Current (AC), HVDC is used to move massive amounts of power efficiently across vast distances.

Government Notifies Creation of South Coast Railway Zone

• What: The Union Government notified the creation of a new zonal railway named South Coast Railway (SCoR) with its headquarters at Visakhapatnam, which becomes effective from June 1, 2026.
• Tell me more:
  • The new zone is carved out of the existing East Coast Railway (ECoR) and South Central Railway (SCR) zones.
  • This reorganisation follows sub-section (4) of Section 3 of the Railways Act, 1989.
  • South Coast Railway will include the Guntakal, Guntur, and Vijayawada divisions from South Central Railway.
  • The existing Waltair division of ECoR will be bifurcated to form the Visakhapatnam division under SCoR, while the remaining part will form the new Rayagada division under ECoR.
  • South Central Railway remains headquartered at Secunderabad with the Hyderabad, Nanded, and Secunderabad divisions.
  • East Coast Railway will retain its Bhubaneswar headquarters along with the Sambalpur, Khurda Road, and Rayagada divisions.
  • The revised divisional boundaries between SCoR, ECoR, and SCR will take effect on June 1, 2026.

Government Approves Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, Gujarat

• What: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the development of a state-of-the-art Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, Gujarat, to expand the national ship repair ecosystem through a combined investment of Rs.1,570 crore.

  • Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) will jointly implement this project as a brownfield facility.

SpaceX Falcon 9 Launches South Korean Imaging Satellite

• What: A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base carrying the South Korean CAS500-2 imaging satellite and 45 secondary payloads into sun-synchronous orbits.

  • The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) developed the primary 500-kilogram satellite carrying a high-resolution optical payload.
