      • External affairs minister, S. Jaishankar is in the last leg of his 3-country visit to Slovenia, Croatia, and Denmark.
  3. India has become the first Asian country to develop a plastics pact to tackle plastic waste. The pact is supported by UK.
      • The plastics pact has been launched in collaboration with the WWF India and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the 16th CII-Sustainability Summit.
      • The pact is supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Waste & Resources Action Programme (a charity organization in UK), and endorsed by the British High Commission in India.
      • 27 businesses and supporting organisations, including major fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands, manufacturers, retailers and recyclers made their commitment to the pact as founding members.
      • The pact aims to reduce the plastic waste in the supply chains by reducing the plastic packaging. The pact will ensure that private entities adhere to the India’s Plastic Pact’s targets in a time-bound manner.
      • India generates 9.46 megatons of plastic waste annually, of which:
        • 40% is not collected
        • about half of all plastics produced in the country are used in packaging, most of which is single-use in nature.

      • The X-Band DWR will help in providing real-time monitoring and reporting of weather events affecting Jammu region.
      • It will be helpful in providing weather forecasts in different sectors including agriculture and tourism forecast, especially for the pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi.
      • A Doppler Weather Radar, is a type of radar used to locate precipitation, calculate its motion, and estimate its type (rain, snow, hail etc.).
  4. Karnataka govt has announced to re-introduce the concept of ‘Industrial Adalat’ in the state to resolve the industrial disputes.
  5. Karbi Anglong Peace Accord is a tripartite agreement among the five insurgent groups of Assam, the Centre and the state government.
      • Karbi Anglong is the largest district of Assam.
      • It has a rich variety of ethnic community. The large variety has also led to disputes and insurgency in the region.

  1. Indian Army has signed a contract worth Rs 100 crores for the procurement of 100 explosive-laden drones or ‘SkyStrikers‘ under its emergency procurement powers.
      • The ‘SkyStrikers’ will be manufactured in Bangalore by a joint venture between Bangalore-based Alpha Design and Israel-based Elbit Security Systems.
      • It is also referred to as a ‘suicide drone’ as it crashes into the target with explosives.
      • ‘Suicide drones’ are autonomous systems that can independently locate, acquire and strike operator-designated targets with a 5 kilogram warhead that is installed inside the fuselage.
      • Recently, Indian Air Force has also given contracts to Alpha Design for Friend-or-Foe or IFF systems and Very High Frequency radars.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. National e-Governance Division has signed an MoU with National Law University, Delhi and National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal to establish a Cyber Lab for the ‘Online Capacity Building Programme on Cyber Law, Crime Investigation and Digital Forensics’.
      • National e-Governance Division is under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
      • Purpose of this MoU – to enable Police Officers, State Cyber Cells, Law Enforcement Agencies, Prosecutors and Judicial Officers to acquire requisite skills to deal with Cyber Forensics cases efficiently & effectively as per the Indian Cyber Law while adopting global best practices, standards and guidelines.
      • The training has started in 2020 only.

  1. International Labour Organization has released the “World Social Protection Report 2020-22”.
      • Title – World Social Protection Report 2020-22: Social protection at the crossroads – in pursuit of a better future
      • As of 2020, 53.1% of the global population or 4.1 billion people were not covered under any social security scheme.
      • The remaining 46.9% of the global population was covered under at least one social security scheme.
      • Globally, the countries are spending 12.9% of their GDPs, on an average basis, on social security schemes (excluding health).
        • High-income countries are spending at least 16.4% of their GDP on social security whereas low-income countries are spending only 1.1%.
      • Region-wise, 84% population approx. in Europe and Central Asia are covered under at least one social security benefit. Africa, with 17.4% of population under social security, is at the bottom.
      • Children: Only 26.4% children worldwide were covered under at least one social security benefit.
      • Women with New-borns: Only 45% of such women, globally, received a cash maternity benefit.
      • Person with Disability: Only 33.5% received a disability grant worldwide.

  1. Times Higher Education (THE) has released its World University Rankings 2022.
      • Total – more than 1,600 universities across 99 countries and territories
      • Top – University of Oxford
        • California Institute of Technology and Harvard University have tied at the 2nd position.
      • India’s best – IISc-Bangalore in 301-350 group, followed by IIT-Ropar and JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (Mysore) in 351-400 group, IIT-Indore in 401-500 group.
      • Parameters – 13 indicators divided into four domains – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
  2. Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM) has published the “Sand and Dust Storms Risk Assessment in Asia and the Pacific” report.
      • APDIM is a regional institution of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
      • The report analysed the impact of sand and dust storms on the air quality.
      • As per the report, more than 500 million people in India and more than 80% of the populations of Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Iran are exposed to medium and high levels of poor air quality due to sand and dust storms.
      • Nearly 60 million people in Karachi, Lahore and Delhi experienced more than 170 dusty days a year in 2019.
      • The situation is much worse for six million residents of eight cities across the region: Three in China, two in Iran, two in Pakistan and one in Uzbekistan.
      • In 2019, sand and dust storms caused the loss of 1,584 gigawatt-hours (gWh) of energy in India, which translated into an economic loss of over $107 million for India per year.
  3. US based Morning Consult organization has released the Global Leader Approval Rating Tracker, which surveyed the approval ratings of 13 leaders from the world.
      • Indian PM Narendra Modi has the highest approval ratings in this list at 70%.
      • This survey data is updated on a weekly basis.
      • Mr Modi is followed by the President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Prime Minister of Italy Mario Draghi, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and President of USA Joe Biden.
