  1. In response to an RTI query, Ministry of Women and Child Development revealed that there are over 33 lakh malnourished children in India.
      • Maharashtra, Bihar, and Gujarat have the highest number of such children.
      • The data belongs to 34 states and UTs.
      • The data has been collected from the Poshan tracker app, which was launched last year for real-time monitoring of nutritional outcomes.
      • Alarming rise!!!
        • Severely acute malnourished children (SAM) – from 9.27 lakh in Nov 2020 to 17.76 lakh in October 2021 (91% increase).
        • Moderately acute malnourished (MAM) children – 15.46 lakh in October 2021
  2. Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has declared the Srinagar airport as a “major airport” under the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority Act, 2008 (AERA).
      • Now, AERA will be able to determine the tariff, including the development fee and passenger service fee, for aeronautical services at the Srinagar airport.
      • The Centre designates an airport as a major airport if it crosses a particular volume of annual passenger traffic.
  3. “Ganga Mashaal” (people of Ganga Task Force) has started its journey from Rishikesh and Haridwar in Uttarakhand to Ganga Sagar in West Bengal, at the end of Ganga Utsav.
      • The 5th edition of ‘Ganga Utsav 2021- The River Festival’ was held in New Delhi from 1st to 3rd November 2021.
      • During the Utsav, Continuous Activity and Learning Portal (CLAP), Ganga Knowledge Portal, etc. were launched.

State News

  1. ‘Mukhyamantri Ghasyari Kalyan Yojana’ has been launched in Uttarakhand to disburse a kit – comprising of two hoe, two sickles, a water bottle and a tiffin – to women engaged in animal husbandry.
      • The scheme was launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his one-day visit to Uttarakhand.
      • 70% of the state population is based on agriculture and animal husbandry.
  2. Kerala govt has launched Haritha Karma Sena (Green Action Force) to collect and segregate refuse from city households to transport it to the solid waste treatment facility of the Kochi Corporation.
      • The Haritha Karma Sena will comprise of volunteers.
  3. cOcOn – annual cyber security and hacking conference organized by Kerala – will be inaugurated by Chief of Defence Staff, Bipin Rawat, on November 12.
      • The conference is organized in partnership with Information Security Research Organization (ISRA).
      • The theme of 2021 conference is “Improvise, Adapt and Overcome”.
      • Prominent speakers from UAE, ISRO, and MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra (C. P. Gurnani) will address the conference.

International News

  1. Australia has announced plans to send an Australian-made rover to the Moon by 2024 to detect water on moon.
      • The mission for detection of water is being carried out by private companies in Australia and Canada, in conjunction with the University of Technology Sydney.
      • This Rover will be sent on Hakuto lander, made by ispace (a Japanese company). The rover is also built by space.
      • Separately, Australia, in collaboration with NASA, will also send an Australian-made rover to the Moon by as early as 2026 to collect lunar soil containing oxygen, which could eventually be used to support human life in space.
  2. UN Security Council adopted the Resolution 2601 on the protection of education in armed conflict.
      • This is the first of its kind resolution adopted by UNSC.
  3. COP 26 of UNFCCC –
      • UK and India launched the ‘Green Grids Initiative One Sun One World One Grid’ (GGI-OSOWOG).
      • International Solar Alliance is the nodal agency for implementing this grid initiative.
      • World Bank Group is also supporting the grid initiative.
      • The Steering Committee, comprising of UK, US, India, France and Australia, will spearhead this initiative. UK pledged technical, financial and research support for the OSOWOG project.
      • A consortium led by French state-run power utility firm EDF and comprising France’s AETS and India’s The Energy and Resources Institute has helped create the road map for OSOWOG.
      • ‘One Sun Declaration’ was adopted at the COP 26 by 80 countries to implement the GGI-OSOWOG.
      • There will be three phases of the GGI-OSOWOG initiative –
        • 1st – interconnectivity across the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia
        • 2nd – connecting African region
        • 3rd – connecting countries globally
      • The ISA aims to help mobilise USD 1 trillion of funding by 2030 to assist developing countries in expanding their solar power grids.
      • ISA was launched in 2015. Initially member countries were primarily located in the region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. But now others like Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands have joined after membership was opened to all nations.
  4. COP 26 of UNFCCC –
      • India presented its third Biennial Update Report (BUR).
      • As per the BUR, India’s solar energy has increased to 45 GW (an increment of 17 times) over the last seven years.
      • India has achieved 24% reduction in emission intensity of its GDP over 2005-2014.
  5. USA has joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) at its 101st member.

  6. United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that the 45 million people in 43 countries are on the edge of famine.
      • This number has risen from 42 million earlier in the year and from 27 million in 2019.
      • The cost of averting famine globally now stands at $7 billion, up from $6.6 billion earlier in the year.

  1. UN Development Program has released the “State of Climate Ambition” report.
      • As per this report, Least Developed Countries (LDC) are most vulnerable to climate change. LDCs are doing their best to tackle the climate crisis.
      • Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – countries that are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and contribute to only 7% of global GHG emissions – are collectively leading the way on pledging to raise ambition.
      • In 2021, 93% of all SIDS and LDCs have plans to enhance their Nationally Determined Contributions (up from 42% in 2019), of which 86% intend to raise mitigation ambition (up from 40% in 2019).

  1. According to an SBI report, about 80% of Indian economy is now formal following digitisation drive and the pandemic.
      • India’s informal economy now stands at around 15-20% of the formal GDP as against 52% three years ago, after the adoption of GST, enhanced digitalisation, and demonetisation.
  2. PHDCCI Economy GPS Index for October 2021 has increased to 131 as compared with 113.1 in the previous month, which indicates economic recovery.
      • During the April-October 2021 period, it stood at 114.8 as compared with 78.7 in the previous financial year.
      • The base year of this index is 2018-19 (which is taken as equal to 100).
      • The PHDCCI Economy GPS Index is based on the monthly values of three high-frequency indicators viz., GST collection (Rs crore), passenger vehicle sales (units) and Sensex (daily average).

  1. Priyanka Mohite (mountaineer) has won the ‘Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2020’.
      • A total of seven people have won this award for the year 2020 in land and water adventure sports’ categories.
      • Winners – Col. Amit Bisht and Lt. Col. Servesh Dhadwal from Indian Army; Jay Prakash Kumar ; Sheetal; Srikaanth Viswanathan; and Jai Kishan.
      • Tenzing Norgay was a Nepali-Indian mountaineer. Established in 1994, The ‘Tenzing Norgay National Award’ is the highest adventure sports honour in India. It is given along with six other national sports awards.
