National News

  1. Mumbai has become the first South Asian City to launch a climate action plan.
      • Mumbai became a part of the C40 Cities climate leadership group in December 2020.
      • The basic aim of this group is to learn from one another and use technology to fight and offset climate change. And based on this, Mumbai has launched the MCAP.
      • Apart from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Jaipur and Kolkata are also in the C40 member cities’ list from India.
      • C40 connects 97 of the world’s largest and most influential cities.
  2. Shikshak Parv 2021 is being celebrated from September 5 to 17, 2021.
      • Theme – Quality and Sustainable School: Learning from Schools in India.
      • During the Parv, following initiatives were launched.
A) Indian Sign Language Dictionary:
○ This is audio and text embedded sign language video for the hearing impaired, in conformity with Universal Design of Learning.
○ It has 10,000 words in it.
B) Vidyanjali 2.0:
○ The portal will facilitate education volunteers/ donors/ CSR contributors for school development.
○ It will encourage private sector to donate for the betterment of govt schools.
(i) Vidyanjali 1.0:
○ Vidyanjali scheme was launched in 2016 by Ministry of Education to boost community participation in government schools.
○ Under the Vidyanjali programme, volunteers, including Indian diaspora, retired persons, like teachers, government officials, defence personnel, professionals, and women who are home makers, will offer their services for co-scholastic activities for children from class I to VIII.
○ Co-scholastic activities include reading to children, helping them with creative writing, public speaking, play acting and preparing story books with children.
○ Vidyanjali will also cover initiatives under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), public -private partnership among other things.
C) NISHTHA 3.0 under NIPUN Bharat Program:
○ NISHTHA 1.0 is for training of teachers of class I to VIII.
○ NISHTHA 2.0 is for training of teachers of class IX to XII.
○ NISHTHA 3.0 is for training of teachers of elementary schools (Early Childhood Children Education) to class V.
○ National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat) will ensure that every child in the country necessarily attains foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) by the end of Grade 3, by 2026-27.
E) School quality assessment and accreditation framework (SQAAF) of CBSE:
○ The framework would provide solutions to eliminate the deficiency in common scientific framework of dimensions like curricula, pedagogy, assessment, infrastructure, inclusive practices and governance process.
F) Olympic Players to visit Schools:
○ PM urged every player (of Olympic and Paralympic 2020) to visit at least 75 schools during Azadi Ka Amrit mahotsav.
○ This will inspire the students and many talented students will get encouragement to go forward in the field of sports.
  1. National Level Meeting with all State Animal Husbandry/Veterinary Ministers was convened through virtual mode under the chairmanship of Shri Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
      • Livestock Sector in India has been growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.15% from 2014-15 to 2019-20.
      • National Livestock Mission and Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) schemes will now cover breeder farm entrepreneurs and fodder entrepreneurs.
      • Under RGM, 50% capital subsidy will be provided to farmers of breed multiplication farms for production and supply of high genetic merit heifers (a heifer is a female cow that has not given birth to any calf).
      • Under the National Livestock Mission, the livestock farmers will get 50% subsidy through the hub and spoke model.
      • During the meeting, Union Minister launched the portal for National Livestock Mission (NLM) to increase the effectiveness and transparency in the scheme implementation.
      • The portal has been developed by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
      • The online portal will enable a customized workflow between State Implementing Agency (SIA), Lenders and the Ministry as required under the Scheme.
      • Union Minister also released the report “Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics- 2020” which contains tabulated data sets giving production estimates for major livestock products like Milk, Eggs, Meat and Wool.
  2. Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy has launched Bujurgon ki Baat-Desh Ke Saath program in New Delhi.
      • The programme aims at enhancing the interaction between the youth and the elder persons who are 95 years and above and have spent around 18 years in India before independence.
      • The video of the interaction should preferably be kept below 60 seconds and can be uploaded at www.rashtragaan.in.

State News

  1. National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources has recognized Manda buffalo (found in Odisha’s Koraput district, and adjoining areas of Malkangiri and Nabarangpur) as the 19th buffalo breed in India.
      • Manda are small, sturdy buffaloes, and both male and females are used for ploughing and in agricultural operations in Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts.
      • Manda buffalo is characterised its flat forehead with short muzzle and broad semi-circular horns.
      • These buffaloes have ash grey and grey-coloured coats with copper colour hair. Some animals are silver-white in colour.
      • There are around 100,000 Manda buffaloes in the Eastern Ghats.
  2. Odisha govt has launched e-Receipt 2.0 to enhance electronic payment of taxes and dues easier.
      • In the new system, e-Receipt 2.0, payment gateway service providers of Indian Bank and Axis Bank were integrated with the Odisha Treasury portal.
      • The portal will provide facilities such as payment through card, UPI ID, QR code and wallet.
  3. Tamil Nadu Generation & Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) has signed an MoU with Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA).
      • Purpose – IREDA will provide technical expertise in developing of renewable energy projects and raising of funds.
  4. Bail Pola festival is celebrated in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.
      • The day is also celebrated as Pola Amavasya in some parts of MP and Chhattisgarh.
      • On this day, the farming community expresses its gratitude towards bulls and oxen for their contribution in agriculture.
      • This day falls on Pithori Amavasya, on the full moon day of the month of Shravana. This year, it falls on September 6. It is being celebrated in Maharashtra with full enthusiasm.
      • In South, Mattu Pongal (thanksgiving festival for bulls) is observed in January.
  5. Delhi govt has launched ‘Business Blasters’ programme for developing young entrepreneurs at the school-level by providing students seed money to start a business.
      • The programme will be implemented in all Delhi government schools under the “Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum” (EMC).
      • School students of class XI and XII will get financial support under this program.

Defence News

  1. AUSINDEX – biennial naval exercise between Indian and Australian Navies – will take place in the Northern Territory of Australia, for the first time, from September 5 to 13.
      • The first edition of this exercise was held in 2015. In 2019, the exercise was upgraded and saw participation of anti-submarine warfare exercises and P‑8 maritime patrol aircraft missions for the first time.
      • The harbour phase will take place at Darwin city of Australia and the sea phase will take place at North Australian Exercise Area.
      • After the exercise, both nations will conduct their first “2+2″ Foreign and Defence Ministers meet in New Delhi. Till now, this meeting was held at the level of foreign and defence secretaries.
      • The decision to upgrade it to the ministerial level was taken last year by Prime Ministers of both countries.

International News

  1. China has launched Geofan-502 – hyper spectral observation satellite – on its Long March 4 Bingyao 40 carrier rocket.
      • It was launched from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre.
  2. Central banks of Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Africa have launched Project Dunbar to test the feasibility of Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) in international payments and settlements.
      • The project is led by the Singapore Centre.
      • Bank of International Settlement Innovation Hub will help these banks in testing CBDCs.
      • Participating Banks – Reserve Bank of Australia, Bank Negara Malaysia, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and South African Reserve Bank.
      • The results of this project are expected to be published in early 2022.

    • Establishment year – 1930
    • Members – 63 central banks (representing about 95% of world GDP)
    • HQ – Basel, Switzerland and it has two representative offices: in Hong Kong SAR and in Mexico City, as well as Innovation Hub Centres around the world.
    • Purpose – to support central banks’ pursuit of monetary and financial stability through international cooperation, and to act as a bank for central banks.
  1. G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting 2021 took place in Italy, where the Rome Declaration on Health was adopted that aims to improve future health security, increase vaccine confidence and tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
      • The members agreed to work together to enhance timely global access to safe, affordable and effective COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.
      • A joint Finance and Health Ministers’ G20 meeting will take place in October, ahead of the main G20 Summit on October 30 and 31.
      • India will hold the G20 Presidency (18th edition) in 2023. Piyush Goyal has been appointed India’s Sherpa for G20.
      • India will be part of the G20 Troika (preceding, current, and incoming G20 Presidencies) from December 1, 2022 till November 30, 2024.
      • G20 Troika is the group of 3 countries which hold presidency consecutively – the preceding, current, upcoming – of G20. For example, Indonesia (2022), India (2023), and Brazil (2024) are the three president countries of G20 consecutively. They form the G20 Troika for 2022-2024.

  1. First Policy Insurance Brokers has announced to merge with Amicus Insurance Brokers.
      • Both of them are Indian companies.
  2. SBM Bank has partnered with fintech player OneCard to launch a mobile-based credit card named ‘Mobile First’.
      • The mobile-first, credit card is a significant step towards acknowledging and celebrating the expanding digital ecosystem of the country.
      • Indian credit card industry is expected to grow at a CAGR (Compound annual growth rate) of more than 25% during 2020 – 2025 owing to the growing trend of ‘buy now pay later’.
  3. Bank of India has signed a co-lending arrangement with MAS Financial Services for MSME loans.
  4. Visa and Innoviti Payment Solutions have partnered to drive a Proof of Concept (POC) for offline payments in India.
      • Innoviti is one of India’s largest providers of payment solutions to offline enterprise merchants.
      • As part of the partnership, Innoviti will develop a debit card which will have a prepaid value of Rs 2000 per day. This card can be used offline via a chip encrypt on it.
      • The POC has been implemented by Innoviti in Bengaluru in partnership with Yes Bank and Axis Bank.
  5. UCO Bank has partnered with Finwizard Technology (the owner of Fisdom) to offer wealth management products and services via its mBanking Plus App.
      • Fisdom is a mutual fund investment app.
      • Through this partnership, Fisdom and UCO Bank will provide mutual fund schemes through UCO Bank’s network of 3,000+ branches and all digital platforms.
  6. HDFC Bank has signed an agreement with the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) for providing credit support to the MSME sector.
      • The bank will extend support to the MSME projects in the areas they are located and to other important industrial sectors across the country.
      • HDFC Bank would accept loan applications forwarded by NSIC and consider sanctioning loans on a merit basis and as per its lending policy.

GDP Forecasts

  1. In its August update to ‘Global Macro Outlook 2021-22’, Moody’s has retained India’s GDP forecast for the 2021 calendar year at 9.6% and 7% for 2022.
      • G-20 economies will grow by 6.2% in 2021, after a 3.2% contraction last year, followed by 4.5% growth in 2022.
      • Further, G-20 advanced economies will grow by 5.6% collectively in 2021 while emerging markets will collectively expand by 7.2% in 2021.
  2. Morgan Stanley has forecasted 10.5% GDP growth rate for India for FY22.

  1. International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is observed on September 7.
      • Theme – Healthy Air, Healthy Planet
      • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, has virtually inaugurated the first functional smog tower in India at Anand Vihar, Delhi.
      • This is the second smog tower in Delhi. The first one was established at Connaught Place.
      • The tower at Anand Vihar has been built by Tata Projects Limited with NBCC (India) Ltd. as the project management consultant.
      • “PRANA” – Portal for Regulation of Air-pollution in Non-Attainment cities is a portal for monitoring of implementation of National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
      • CPCB is hosting the Prana portal (https://prana.cpcb.gov.in/#/home).
      • Since 2019, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have been implementing the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to achieve 20 to 30% reduction in Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5) concentrations by 2024 across the country.
      • City-specific action plans for improving air quality for 132 non-attainment cities have been prepared and are already being implemented.

      • Gold winners – Avali Lekhara (air rifle shooter), Pramod Bhagat (badminton), Krishna Nagar (badminton SH-6), Manish Narwal (pistol shooter), Sumit Antil (Javelin Throw).
      • Highlights –
          • Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj has become the first IAS officer to win Paralympic medal (silver medal at badminton). He is the first IAS to participate in Paralympics.
          • Bhavaniben Patel became the first Indian para-paddler to win silver medal.
          • Praveen Kumar won silver in high jump but created an Asian record in the sport.
          • Harvinder Singh became first Indian to win a medal (bronze) in Archery in Paralympics.
