UNFCCC’s Climate Conference 2026 in Bonn, Germany

Russia Offers Su-57 Fighter Jet Joint Production

  • What: Russian President Vladimir Putin offered India joint production of the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter jet with no restrictions to help bridge the fighter aircraft gap of the country.
  • Tell me more:
    • India needs 42 Air Force squadrons but currently has only 31, creating a shortage of 11 squadrons.
    • India’s indigenous AMCA fighter is unlikely to enter service before 2035.
    • Russia has offered the Su-57 fifth-generation stealth fighter, and India is considering it as a temporary solution to bridge this gap.
    • India may procure around 36 Su-57 aircraft (two squadrons), with possible collaboration involving Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
    • India and Russia had earlier worked on the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) Programme, but India exited the project in 2021 over cost, performance, and technology-sharing concerns.
    • Russia has also offered broader defence cooperation, including S-400 Missile System air defence systems, and remains India’s largest arms supplier despite India’s efforts to diversify defence imports.
