  1. Ministry of Electronics and IT has launched PMGDISHA drive to achieve 100% digital literacy in digital villages.
      • The campaign has been launched under the PMGDISHA scheme (Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyaan).
      • Under the campaign, a certification drive for rural citizens especially women and disadvantaged communities will be conducted from September 8th to 10th.

  3. The Central Government has constituted an eight-member panel, headed by Dr V G Somani (Drugs Controller General of India), for framing a New Drugs, Cosmetics and Medical Devices Bill by November 30, 2021.
      • The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, regulates the import, manufacture, distribution and sale of drugs, cosmetics and medical devices.
  4. India and Denmark have set up ‘Centre of Excellence on Offshore Wind’ as part of the Green Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
      • India has set a target of adding 30 GW of offshore wind energy projects by 2030.
      • Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities have set up the CoE.
      • There will be four working groups under the CoE, which are: –
        • Working Group on Spatial Planning;
        • Working Group on Financial Framework Conditions;
        • Working Group on Supply Chain Infrastructure; and
        • Working Group on Standards And Testing.
      • In the long run, the CoE aims to transform into an international centre for offshore wind energy.
      • According to the M/o of New and Renewable Energy, RK Singh, India has a renewable energy portfolio of 146 GW, at present. Also, India has reduced its emissions by 28% over 2005 levels, against the target of 35% by 2030.
  5. Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced a 100-day plan for India’s Civil Aviation Sector.
      • As per the plan, six heliports will be developed in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand under the RCS-UDAN scheme.
      • The plan has 16 main points – 4 of which are under infrastructure, 8 under policy targets, and 4 under reforms.
  6. India and USA have launched Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP), in accordance with US -India Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership, to focus on clean energy sectors such as biofuels and hydrogen.
      • The US -India Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership was launched in April 2021 at the Leaders’ Summit on Climate.
      • John Kerry, the US President’s Special Envoy, visited India.
      • US-India Strategic Energy Partnership (SEP) was launched in 2018 and four technical pillars for it were established in January 2019. The pillars of US-India SEP are: –
        • Power and Energy Efficiency,
        • Responsible Oil and Gas,
        • Renewable Energy,
        • Sustainable Growth,
        • Emerging Fuels (new category added)
      • In June, US-India Hydrogen Task Force was launched. Now, India-US Task Force on Biofuels has been announced.
      • US-India Gas Task Force is being transformed into US-India Low Emissions Gas Task Force.
  7. Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched Swachh Surveskshan Grameen 2021 under the Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen Phase 2.
      • Number of villages and districts – 17475 villages in 698 districts across the country
      • Weightage: –
          • Direct observation of sanitation in villages including HHs/ public places – 30%
          • Citizen’s feedback including feedback from common citizens, key influencers at the village level and from citizens online using a mobile app – 35%
          • Service level progress on sanitation related parameters – 35%

        • Assessment of solid, liquid, plastic waste and faecal sludge management arrangements
        • Awareness on menstrual hygiene

Agriculture & Rural Development

  1. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2022-23.
      • The expected returns to farmers over their cost of production are estimated to be highest in case of wheat and rapeseed & mustard (100% each), followed by lentil (79%); gram (74%); barley (60%); safflower (50%).
      • In the Union Budget 2018-19, the announcement of fixing the MSPs at a level of at least 1.5 times of the all-India weighted average cost of production was made by the govt.

Defence News

  1. Indian Naval Aviation received President’s colour at INS Hansa, Goa.
      • President’s colour award is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon any military unit of India.
  2. Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the procurement of C-295MW transport aircraft from M/s Airbus Defence and Space S.A., Spain for the Indian Air Force.
      • Total 56 aircrafts will be procured.
      • 16 aircrafts will be procured directly from Spain and the remaining 40 will be manufactured in India by Tata consortium.
      • This is the first of its kind project in which a military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private company.
  3. DRDO hands over air defence missile (MRSAM) System to the Indian Air Force at Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. IIT-Bombay has signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) for extending the joint operations of GROWTH – India Telescope.
      • GROWTH – India Telescope was set up by IIT-Bombay and IIA in 2018 in Hanle, Ladakh for conducting joint research in the field of cosmic properties.
      • The telescope was established with the support of DST-Science and Engineering Research Board and Indo-US Science and Technology Forum.
  2. About GROWTH – India Telescope and IIA:

      • It is the India’s first fully-robotic optical telescope and one of the few such facilities present outside of Europe and the USA.
      • Two students of IIT Bombay had discovered 2020 QG – which was the closest known asteroid that flew past Earth without impacting it – by using this telescope.
      • The IIA is the nodal center for the Indian participation in the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), Hawaii, and hosts India-TMT coordination center.
      • The IIA is currently developing the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph for the Aditya-L1 mission (to be launched in 2022).
  3. Union Cabinet has approved the MoU between India and Russia for cooperation in the field of geosciences.
      • Parties to the MoU – Rosgeologia (referred to as ROSGEO), and Geological Survey of India
      • Areas of cooperation – exploration of mineral deposits, analysis and interpretation of the aero-geophysical data and joint development of the Indian Geoscience Data repository with the Russian state-of-the-art information technology.
  4. Union Cabinet has approved MoU between the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and the Chamber of Auditors of the Republic of Azerbaijan (CAAR).
      • Purpose – for establishing the mutual co­operation in the areas of Member Management, Professional Ethics, Technical Research, Professional Accountancy Training, Audit Quality Monitoring, Advancement of Accounting Knowledge, Professional and Intellectual Development.
  5. Union Cabinet has approved the MoU between India and Portugal for recruitment of Indian citizens to work in the Portuguese Republic.
      • The MoU would set an institutional mechanism for partnership and cooperation between India and Portugal on sending and accepting Indian workers.
      • Under this agreement, a Joint Committee will be set up to follow up the implementation of the same.
