  2. Govt approves 11 EV manufacturers for receiving incentives under EMPS
      • What: The Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved 11 electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, including Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, Ola Electric, and Mahindra, for incentives under the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024.
      • Why: The scheme aims to sustain EV sales growth and has replaced the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles – II (FAME-II) scheme. It commenced on April 1 with an allocation of approximately 500 crore, continuing until July 31.

        • Other approved EV manufacturers include TVS Motor, Quantum Energy, Hop Electric, Kinetic Green, BGauss Auto, and TI Clean Mobility.
        • To manage increasing demand and ease the burden on EV manufacturers, the government has reduced the maximum subsidy cap. The cap for electric two-wheelers (e2W) is now approximately 10,000 per vehicle, down from approximately 22,500, while for e3W, it is approximately 50,000, reduced from approximately 111,505. Both categories will receive incentives of approximately 5,000 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

  1. NPS assets under management record 30.5% YoY growth in 2023-24
      • What: The National Pension System (NPS) assets under management (AUM) grew by 30.5% YoY, reaching ₹11.73 lakh crore (₹8.98 lakh Crore) in 2023-24.
      • Why: According to the latest data from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), this growth is largely due to increased participation from the non-government sector,
        • Around 9.47 lakh new subscribers onboarded NPS from the non-government sector. Of these 9.47 lakh new subscribers, 8.10 lakh were from the ‘all citizen model ‘ and 1.37 lakh were Corporate employees.

        • The latest 30.5 per cent jump is also higher than the 27 per cent year-on-year increase seen in NPS assets last fiscal.
        • The overall growth of NPS assets this fiscal has been driven by buoyant equity markets and a widening NPS subscriber base as more working-age Indians take up retirement planning seriously.
        • The non-government sector—corporates and retail—saw a 41.67 per cent year-on-year growth in NPS assets to ₹ 2.27 lakh Crore as of March 31.
        • On the other hand, government employees’ assets have recorded 28 per cent year-on-year growth at ₹ 9.05 lakh crore as of March 31. The number of new government employees onboarded NPS in fiscal 2023-24 stood at 7.10 lakh.
        • The pace of asset growth has been higher for the non-government sector than for government employees due to the higher allocation towards equity amongst the former category of subscribers.
        • Equity assets constitute around 18 per cent of the overall AUM, while for the Retail and Corporate Segment, it is relatively higher at around 40-45 per cent.
        • Last fiscal year, PFRDA had added a million new subscribers.

        • MCLR stands for Marginal Cost of Funds Lending Rate. It’s the minimum interest rate that a bank in India can offer on a loan
      • The one-year MCLR now stands at 8.85%, while the six-month and three-month MCLR have been increased to 8.65% and 8.45%, respectively.
      • It’s noted that most non-retail loans are linked to the one-year MCLR.

      • SEBI has disposed of the show-cause notice against the bank under the settlement regulations after the recommendation by the High-Powered Advisory Committee (HPAC) of SEBI.
