  1. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced to assist the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region for development projects in the Northeast region through satellite imaging and other space technology for better accomplishment of targets.
      • Minister of Development of North Eastern Region is Jitendra Singh.
      • This is the first time in India where there is institutionalised involvement of ISRO in mapping and sharing of data for developmental projects and it can become a model for other states too.
      • North Eastern Council (NEC) was established by the North Eastern Council Act, 1971. Union Home Minister is the ex-officio chairperson of this council.

State News

  1. Flipkart has partnered with Telangana government for ‘Medicines from the Sky’ project to deliver medicines by using drones to remote areas of state.
      • Along with delivery of medicines, geo mapping, routing of shipments and track and trace of location etc, will be carried out by drones.
      • The ‘Medicines from the Sky’ is a project conceived by the World Economic Forum and Healthnet Global Limited.

Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. As per the data from Ministry of Commerce, the exports of organic products grew by 51% year-on-year to USD 1 billion (Rs 7,078 crore) in 2020-21.
      • Oil cake meal, oilseeds, fruit pulps and purees, cereals and millets, spices and condiments, tea, dry fruits, sugar, pulses, coffee, and essential oil recorded a healthy growth in exports.
      • India’s organic products have been exported to 58 countries including the USA, European Union, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Switzerland, Israel, and South Korea.
      • Indian farm exports rose over 17.34% to $ 41.25 billion in FY21. In INR terms, the increase is 22.62% with exports amounting to Rs. 3.05 lakh crore.
      • For agriculture products (excluding marine and plantation products), the growth is 28.36% with exports of USD 29.81 billion in 2020-21 as compared to USD 23.23 billion in 2019-20.
      • National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) verifies the quality requirements of organic products for their export.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. India and Kuwait have signed an MoU to bring Indian domestic workers in the Gulf nation within the ambit of a legal framework that streamlines their recruitment and provides them with the protection of the law.
      • The MoU will introduce an employment contract which will ensure the rights and obligations of both the employer and the domestic workers.
      • The MoU seeks to establish a mechanism for 24-hour assistance to domestic workers.
      • It provides for the establishment of a joint committee for periodic review and assessment and to follow up the implementation of the MoU which will conduct annual meetings.

    Additional Facts:

      • Around 1 million Indians reside in Kuwait. India is amongst the largest trading partners of Kuwait and the Gulf nation is a major supplier of oil to India.
      • Both sides agreed to hold the first India-Kuwait Joint Commission meeting later this year and also to set dates for early meetings of the Joint Working Groups on health, hydrocarbon and manpower.
      • Both countries launched year-long celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Kuwait at the meeting.

  1. Global House Price Index – Q1 2021 report has been released by Knight Frank.
      • Total – 56 countries
      • Top – Turkey
      • India’s rank – 55th, followed by Spain
          • The rank declined by 12 positions due to a fall in average home rates by 1.6%.
          • In fact, average price in India was lowest in January-March quarter at least since mid-2015.
          • Only NCR and Hyderabad saw growth in house prices.
Global house index report
  1. Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has released “India Wind Energy Market Outlook 2025”.
      • India will install 20 GW of wind energy capacity over 2021-25.
      • About 90% of this capacity addition will be contributed by Centre, followed by corporate procurement and lastly by States.
      • Currently, 10.3 GW wind energy capacity addition is under installation. It will be complete by 2023.
      • Over the past two years, wind capacity awarded by the Centre fell from a high of 6.4 GW in 2018 to 1 GW in 2020.
      • Volume awarded through hybrid tenders, however, has risen from 0.8 GW in 2018 to 2.8 GW in 2020.
      • As of February 2021, India’s total installed wind power capacity was 38 GW. India has 4th largest installed wind power capacity worldwide.
      • Only 1.1 GW was realised, and nearly 0.8-1 GW of capacity scheduled for commissioning in 2020, postponed into 2021.
      • Also, around 1.1 GW of capacity was backed out by developers or not granted date of commissioning extensions, out of the total outlook of 3.3 GW.

  1. Google has announced to develop an open subsea cable to provide robust internet connectivity between United States, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.
      • The cable is named Firmina cable to honour Brazilian abolitionist and author Maria Firmina dos Reis.
      • It will be the longest cable in the world. It is capable of running entirely from a single power source at one end of the cable if its other power source(s) become temporarily unavailable.
      • With Firmina, Google has now investments in 16 subsea cables including Dunant, Equiano and Grace Hopper.

  1. Rebeca Grynspan (economist and former vice president of Costa Rica) has become the first woman to be appointed secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
      • She will be the first woman and Central American to lead UNCTAD (based in Geneva).

      • UNCTAD is the principal organ of the United Nations General Assembly dealing with trade, investment and development issues.
