      • This is a free of cost training initiative to attract the youth towards sandalwood farming, revive this declining art & help reposition India as a market leader in the trade of sandalwood.
      • India used to contribute 85% of the world’ sandalwood trade erstwhile.
      • In 2020, the world sandalwood market stood at USD 300 million. As per the World Trade Research, the market size of sandalwood is expected to rise to USD 3 billion by 2040.

  1. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has signed an MoU with ICAR-Central Citrus Research Institute (ICAR-CCRI), Nagpur for boosting exports of citrus and its value added products.
      • The MoU envisages promoting export by focussing on creation of product specific clusters along with development of technologies by APEDA and ICAR-CCRI with a focus on efficient and precision farming.
      • APEDA and ICAR-CCRI would also develop Standard Operating Procedure of citrus fruits for exports which would include pre and post-harvest management, Residue control, post-harvest interval, Shelf life development etc.

  2. High-Level Commemorative Meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the First Conference of Non-Aligned Countries was held in Belgrade, Serbia.
  3. International Energy Agency (IEA) has invited India, the world’s third-largest energy consumer, to become its full-time member.
      • IEA is made up of 30 member countries and eight associate nations.
      • Four countries are seeking accession to full membership – Chile, Colombia, Israel and Lithuania.
      • The IEA was founded in 1974 by industrialised countries – within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) – in response to the oil embargo.
      • IEA has begun to invite emerging countries since 2015. Since then, eight countries have joined the IEA’s Association programme: Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Singapore, South Africa and Thailand.

  1. 2nd edition of the Ecological Threat Report (ETR) has been released by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP).
      • The report covers 178 independent states and territories.
      • The ETR assessed the states on population growth, water stress, food insecurity, droughts, floods, cyclones, and rising temperature.
Findings:
Conflict and Ecological Threats:
• Around 1.26 billion people across 30 countries are suffering from both extreme ecological risk and low levels of resilience.
• As many as 13 countries faced extremely high and 34 others faced high ecological threats.
• These countries are especially found in Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. • Ecological degradation and conflict are intertwined, one leading to other. Climate change will amplify this threat.
• Conflict costs the global economy worth $600 billion in 2020.
Food Risk:
• Global food insecurity has increased by 44% since 2014, affecting 30.4% of the world's population in 2020, and is likely to rise further.
• South Asia is the worst region.
• Covid-19 has increased the food insecurity further.
Water Risk:
• By 2040, over 5.4 billion people will live in countries facing extreme water stress.
• Lebanon and Jordan are the countries’ most at risk.
Population:
• 11 countries are projected to double their population between 2021 and 2050. They are all in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Half of the world's population will live in the 40 least peaceful countries, by 2050. This will be an increase of 1.3 billion people from 2020 levels.

      • RBI had extended the on-tap SLTRO for SFBs till December 31, 2021. This facility was earlier made available till October 31, 2021.
      • All SFBs eligible under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) can participate in the scheme.
      • There is no tenure restriction regarding lending by SFBs under the scheme.
      • However, the amount borrowed by SFBs from the RBI should at all times be backed by lending to the specified segments till maturity of the SLTRO.
      • SFBs should lend within a reasonable period, i.e., not later than 30 days from the date of availing the funds from the RBI.
