      • At the exhibition, 75 newly-developed AI products/technologies, having application in defence, will be launched.

      Additional Facts –

      • Ministry of Defence had set up the “AI task force on Defence” in 2018, under the chairmanship of N Chandrasekaran (Chairman of Tata Sons).
Major Recommendations of the Task Force –
• Integrating and embedding AI strategy for Defence with Defence strategy.
• Establishment of a High level Defence AI Council (DAIC) and a Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA).
• Earmarking of AI budget from yearly Defence Budget with a corpus of Rs 1,000 crores to be provided each year for next 5 years to support AI activities.
  • High level Defence AI Council (DAIC) under the Chairmanship of Raksha Mantri and Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA) with Secretary of Defence Production Department as ex officio head were set up.
  • AI Sub Committee and Joint Working Group on AI in Tri-Services have also been established since then.

International News

  1. For the first time, NASA has removed nearly 78 kilograms of trash from the International Space Station (ISS).
      • The technology for waste disposal was developed by Nasa’s Johnson Space Center and a private company
  2. Ghana has reported its first-ever suspected cases of Marburg virus disease.
      • It’s a highly infectious viral haemorrhagic fever with a fatality ratio of up to 88% and belongs to the same family as Ebola.
      • Fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family are the key carriers of the disease. It typically infects humans following prolonged exposure to mines or caves inhabited by Rousettus bat colonies.
      • Human-to-human transmission takes place through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people.

  1. World Population Prospects 2022 report has been released by UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Life Expectancy• Global life expectancy at birth reached 72.8 years in 2019, an improvement of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average global longevity of around 77.2 years in 2050.
• Global life expectancy at birth fell to 71 years in 2021.
Population Growth• The global population is projected to reach 8 billion on 15 November 2022.
• India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.
• However, the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen under 1% in 2020.
• The world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100.
• More than half of the projected increase in the global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in 8 countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Fertility Rate• Presently, 2/3rd of the global population lives in a country or area where lifetime fertility is below 2.1 births per woman.
• The populations of 61 countries or areas are projected to decrease by 1% or more between 2022 and 2050, owing to the low levels of fertility and, in some cases, increasing rates of emigration.

      • The rank analysis is based on 5 lead macroeconomic indicators, for each of the years of 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
      • India is projected to improve to the IER rank of 2nd for the year 2022.

      • At the event, two committees were formed.
        • 1st – A nine-member panel, chaired by Bhargav Dasgupta, MD and CEO of ICICI Lombard General, has been set up to sort out the issues between non-life insurers and re-insurers.
        • 2nd – A seven-member panel, chaired by Naveen Tahilyani, CEO and MD, Tata AIA Life Insurance, has been set up to look at the life insurance segment and re-insurers.
          • The panel makes recommendations on stabilisation of reinsurance rates, capacity constraints with reinsurers, securitisation of mortality risk and financial reinsurance solutions, among others.
  5. RBI has announced an arrangement for domestic traders to settle imports and exports in rupees with countries including Russia and Sri Lanka.
      • According to RBI, it will promote global trade growth and will support the increasing interest of the global trading community in the domestic currency.
      • This will also help India to promote exports and facilitate trade with countries under sanctions.
      • Under the mechanism, Indian importers will make payments in rupees, which will be credited to the Vostro account of the correspondent bank of the partner country. Similarly, Indian exporters will be paid the export proceeds in rupees from the balances in the Vostro account of the partner country.
