  1. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling has started an ambitious programme to release 20 Red Pandas in about 5 years to the Singalila National Park, West Bengal.
      • There are only two species of Panda – Red and Giant.
      • Panda is the state animal of Sikkim.
      • India is home to both the (sub) species – Himalayan red panda and Chinese red panda.
      • Red Pandas are classified as Endangered in IUCN’s Red List. Giant Pandas are classified as Vulnerable in the same list.
  2. Union Ministry of Textiles has been implementing the Jute Mark India (JMI) scheme to label the jute products of India with a special mark having a unique QR code to give authenticity and quality assurance to the customers.
      • National Jute Board is the nodal agency of the Union textiles ministry, responsible for the promotion of jute and jute products in India and abroad.
      • JMI was implemented under an umbrella scheme for development and promotion of the jute sector between FY’22 and FY’26 with a total financial outlay of Rs 485.58 crore by the Centre.
      • The provisional exports of jute goods during 2021-22 have been at Rs 3785.68 crore (USD 508 million), representing a growth of over 38% as compared to 2020-21.
      • Now, the Jute Mark logo has been launched. Jute is also called as the Golden Fibre of India.

  1. Union Minister Smriti Irani has inaugurated the Sealdah Metro station of East-West Corridor in Kolkata.
      • North–South–East–West Corridor (NS-EW) is the largest ongoing highway project in India, which is being developed by National Highways Development Project (NHDP).
  1. Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) has partnered with UNICEF to provide job opportunities to the university students.
  2. PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of developmental projects worth more than ₹16,800 crores in Deoghar, Jharkhand.
      • PM also inaugurated the Deoghar airport which has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore.
      • He also inaugurated in-patient department and operation theatre services at AIIMS, Deoghar.
  3. Uttarakhand has become the India’s first state to initiate process of implementing the National Education Policy 2020 at the pre-primary level.
      • ‘Bal Vatikas’ were launched at anganwadi kendras across the state to strengthen the pre-primary education system.
      • Uttarakhand aims to become a leading state by 2025 when it will be celebrating the silver jubilee of its formation.
      • By 2030, the New Education Policy will be fully implemented in Uttarakhand.

Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. Central govt has launched a nationwide crackdown to curb diversion of about 1 million tonnes of agriculture-grade urea per year for industrial uses that results in subsidy leakage of around ₹6,000 crores.
      • The Centre provides urea at a highly subsidised rate of ₹266 per bag (of 45 kg) to farmers. It has to bear a subsidy of over ₹2,700 per bag.
      • There is an annual requirement of around 3-1.4 million tonnes of technical-grade urea for industrial usage, of which only 0.15 million tonnes are produced in the country. The industry imports only 0.2 million tonnes, as against the required level of more than 1 million tonnes.
      • The department of fertilisers has constituted a special team named ‘Fertiliser Flying Squad’ for surprise inspections of units involved in diversion, black marketing, hoarding and supply of sub-standard quality of fertiliser.

  1. The Large Hadron Collider’s LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment has discovered three never-seen-before particles.
      • Large Hadron Collider is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle collider.
      • Located at Geneva, the collider was built by European Organization for Nuclear Research (also known as CERN).
  2. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has delivered the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe so far.
      • Webb’s First Deep Field image mentions is galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, and it is full of thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared.

  1. UN Development Program has released the “Addressing the Cost of Living Crisis in Vulnerable Countries” report.
      • As per the report, the welfare measures announced by the Central government—food security measures and cash transfers—have been effective in protecting the vulnerable sections of the society from the inflation impact.
      • India, US, France, Japan and China had low impact on poverty due to inflation in the context of the ripple effects of the Russia-Ukraine war.
      • Soaring food prices and energy prices can push up to 71 million people into poverty
      • Argentina, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan are among the countries, which are highly impacted by the war.
      • The UNDP report studied the impact of inflationary surge and support from governments over different poverty lines of less than $1.9 a day, less than $3.3 a day and less than $5.5 a day.

Banking and Economy

  1. Swedish home appliances company Electrolux has announced the launch of its first experience centre in India at Saket, Delhi.
      • The company has divested its entire stake from India in 2005.
  2. According to RBI’s latest bulletin on State’s finances, the average gross fiscal deficit to gross domestic product (GFD-GDP) ratio of states was 2.5% during 2011-2019, well below the fiscal responsibility cap of 3%.
      • There were inter-state variations — states such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan had GFD-GSDP ratio of more than 3.5%.
      • Currently, Punjab, Rajasthan, Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have the highest debt burden and a GFDGSDP equal to or higher than 3%.
  3. Finnish telecom company Nokia has partnered with IISc to set-up Nokia Centre of Excellence in networked robotics at IISc Bengaluru.
      • The Centre of Excellence (CoE) will promote inter-disciplinary research involving robotics and advanced communication technologies in 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

      • The TDC Fund will route India’s commitment of approx. 175 cr. (£17.5 million) to the Global Innovation Development Fund (GIP Fund).
      • The GIP fund is proposed to be established in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the India-UK Global Innovation Partnership (GIP).
      • SVL will act as the administrator-cum-advisor (Investment Manager) of TDC Fund and facilitate the GIP program for MEA.
  6. Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved the third power exchange of India e., Hindustan Power Exchange Ltd (HPX).
      • The exchange is promoted by PTC India Ltd, Bombay Stock Exchange and ICICI Bank.
      • The other two power exchanges in the country are Indian Energy Exchange and Power Exchange of India Ltd.
      • Power Exchanges provide the market participants a platform for buying-selling of power and hence manage their power portfolios efficiently.
