  1. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched ‘iRASTE’ project to reduce road accidents by as much as 50% by 2025 and improve the infrastructure to reduce accidents.
      • iRASTE is an acronym for Intelligent Solutions for Road Safety through Technology and Engineering.
      • It is an Artificial Intelligence-powered project.
      • It has been launched in Nagpur on a pilot basis.
      • Developers – Intel, National Institute for Transparency, Access to Information and Personal Data Protection (INAI), IIIT-Hyderabad, CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, Mahindra & Mahindra and Nagpur Municipal Corporation
      • Modus-operandi –
        • First step – Identify white, grey, and black zones (based on frequency of accidents in ascending order) and prepare a map showing these zones using AI.
        • Second step – Identify the reasons for accidents
        • Third step – Take action to improve the situation
  2. Major highlights of the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between India and Australia, in New Delhi:
      • Australia will provide $10 million to India for developing disaster-resilient infrastructure.
      • The next 2+2 dialogue will take place in 2023.
      • Australian ministers also attended the Third Indo-Pacific Oration event organised by Observer Research Foundation.
  3. India’s Largest Open Air Fernery with completely natural surroundings was inaugurated at Ranikhet, Almora district in Uttarakhand.
      • The fernery has been set up by a well-known expert on ferns Nilambar Kunetha.
      • It has a collection of 120 different types of fern with only Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), Thiruvananthapuram having a larger number of fern species.
      • The fernery has a mix of species from the western and eastern Himalayan regions as well as from Western Ghats.
      • The fernery has around 30 species which have tremendous medicinal importance.
India’s Largest Open Air Fernery
  1. Central govt has allowed 11 states to borrow Rs 15,721 crores for capital expenditure.
      • States – Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
      • Out of the net borrowing ceiling (NBC) of 4% of GSDP for the states for 2021-22, 0.50% of GSDP was earmarked for incremental capital expenditure to be incurred by the states during 2021-22.
  2. Ministry of Tribal Affairs has announced to launch Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana in 36000 villages across India.
      • The villages having 50% tribal population will be prioritized.
  3. India will organize the “India-Africa Defence Dialogue” alongside Def-Expo 2022.

  2. National Statistics Office has released the “Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households and Land and Livestock Holdings of Households in Rural India, 2019” report.
      • The report was prepared as part of NSO’s 77th round of survey. Tenure of the report is 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2019.
Definition:
• Definition of an Agricultural Household: An agricultural household is defined as a household receiving more than Rs 4000 as value of produce from agricultural activities and having at least one member self-employed in agriculture either in the principal status or in subsidiary status during the last 365 days.
• Entirely agricultural labour households, coastal fishing, rural artisans and agricultural services were kept outside the scope of the survey as they are not agricultural activities as per the survey.
Number of Agricultural Households:
•Total – 9.3 crores
⚬ Of them, Other Backward Classes account for 45.8%, Scheduled Castes 15.9%, Scheduled Tribes 14.2% and others 24.1%.
• Non-agricultural households living in rural areas were at 7.93 crores.
Income:
• The average monthly income per agricultural household during the agricultural year 2018-19 was at Rs 10,218 – a 59% increase compared with Rs 6,426 in 2012-13.
• Farm income doubled to 4,063 in 2018-19 compared with Rs 2,071 in 2012-2013 due to higher monthly wages.
Loans:
• As per the report, over 50% of agricultural households in India were in debt.
• The average outstanding loan per household was Rs 74,121 in 2018 compared with Rs 47,000 in 2013.
• Only 69.6% of the outstanding loans were taken from institutional sources like banks, cooperative societies and government agencies, while 20.5% of loans were from professional money lenders.
Possession of land:
• Almost 83.5% of rural households had less than 1 hectare of land, while only 0.2% possessed land in excess of 10 hectares.
State-wise data:
• Of the 28 states for which data is available, 11 states — Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Telangana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh — had a higher average outstanding loan per household than the national average in 2018-19.

  2. DBS Bank has partnered with SWIFT Global Payments Innovation to launch the real-time online tracking for cross-border collections for businesses in India.
      • The new service by DBS Bank allows corporates to see when a payment is on its way and when it is arriving at the beneficiary, which in turn reduces operational costs and disputes.
  3. Reserve Bank of India and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) have announced plans to link Singapore’s PayNow and India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) real-time payment systems by July 2022.
      • Purpose – to enable users to make instant, low cost fund transfers directly from one bank account to another between Singapore and India.
      • PayNow is owned by Association of Banks in Singapore.
  4. Colexion – India’s largest licenced Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) platform – has been launched to facilitate trading of NFT.
      • NFT is a digital asset (for e.g. music video, painting, video, audio, poem, text etc.) that is stored in blockchain. NFTs cannot be duplicated, therefore, they are traded at a high value on platforms like Colexion by virtue of their uniqueness.
