  1. For the first time, a commercial consignment of Jardalu mangoes from Bhagalpur, Bihar, was exported to the UK
      • Jardalu mangoes from Bhagalpur received GI (Geographical Indications) certification in 2018.
      • While most of the states in India have mango plantations, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka have a major share in total production of the fruit.
      • GI tags are given under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
      • Mangoes are processed by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and then exported to various regions and countries including the Middle-east, European Union, the US, Japan and South Korea.

  1. Three Advanced Light Helicopters ALH Mk-III, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), were inducted into the stables of the Indian Coast Guard.
      • These helicopters, will be positioned in Bhubaneswar, Porbandar, Chennai and Kochi and will be part of different Coast Guard Aviation Squadrons.

International News

  1. European Space Agency (ESA) has planned to launch the world’s first wooden satellite, WISA Woodsat, on Earth’s orbit by the end of 2021.
      • The mission will test the applicability of wooden materials like plywood in spacecraft structures and expose it to extreme space conditions, such as heat, cold, vacuum and radiation, for an extended period of time.
      • The satellite will be launched on a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from the Mahia Peninsula launch complex in New Zealand.
      • The satellite has been designed and built in Finland.
      • WISA Woodsat is a 10x10x10 cm nano satellite built up from plywood, the same material that is found in a hardware store or to make furniture.
      • The satellite will orbit at around 500-600 km altitude in polar Sun-synchronous orbit.
      • Japan had also announced to launch wooden satellite by 2023.
  2. UN Trade Forum 2021 was held at Palais des Nations (conference centre), Geneva, Switzerland.
      • Theme – Towards a green and inclusive recovery
      • At the forum, the Raúl Prebisch lectures have offered renowned intellectuals and heads of state a platform to address critical global issues, since 1982. The 17th Raúl Prebisch Lecture will be given by Nobel Laureate Esther Duflo.

      • The award was established in 2009 in honour of Nobel-Laureate playwright Harold Pinter. It is an annual award which is given to a writer who shows a ‘fierce intellectual determination to define the real truth of our societies.
      • Dangarembga is a novelist, playwright, filmmaker and activist.
      • She was also shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize in 2020 for her book ‘This Mournable Body.
  2. Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education (MGNCRE) has released the list of winners of ‘One District One Green Champion’ swachhata award 2021.
      • Total 400 colleges have won the award for keeping their university campuses clean. The winners are making progress towards a ‘Swachh Bharat’.
      • The awards are given by the MGNCRE, under Dept of Higher Education, Ministry of Education under the Swachhta Action Plan 2020-21.
      • The awards are given to encourage universities / colleges to keep their campuses clean by giving them rankings.
