  1. Atal Innovation Mission and Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK) have decided to launch the AIM-ICDK Water Innovation Challenge 2.0, the first edition was launched in May 2021.
      • The Challenge aims to address the water distress through innovation.
      • Innovation Center Denmark (ICDK) is a unit under Embassy of Denmark and Denmark Technical University (DTU).
      • The Denmark Embassy in India and DTU will prepare Indian students for the Next Generation Water Action Program, which will be hosted by DTU.
  2. 2nd edition of ‘Animal Husbandry Startup Grand Challenge’ has been launched by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Farming.
      • Purpose – to find innovative and commercially viable solutions to address six problems faced by the animal husbandry and dairy sector.
      • Prize – Rs 10 lakh for winner and Rs 7 lakh for runner-up of each of the six problem areas
      • The challenge is open on startupindia.gov.in.
  3. A Supreme Court Bench, led by Justice L. Nageswara Rao, has directed States and Union Territories to immediately start the process of issuing voter ID cards, Aadhaar and ration cards to sex workers across the country.
      • The Bench asserted that every person is guaranteed their fundamental rights irrespective of vocation.
      • Until, the ration cards are not issues, states and UTs have been directed to supply ration to the sex workers as Right to Food is a human right under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
      • National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and State AIDS control societies would prepare a list of sex workers after verifying the information provided to them by the community-based organisations.
  4. India, Iran, and Uzbekistan are holding discussions to use the Chabahar Port, located off the Gulf of Oman, for joint transit and transportation purposes.
      • After the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, India is trying put the port to other uses like increasing connectivity with the other land-locked Central Asian countries.
  5. Supreme Court has upheld the government’s mandate to broaden three Himalayan highways, Rishikesh to Mana, Rishikesh to Gangotri and Tanakpur to Pithoragarh.
      • These highways are considered crucial by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for quick troop build-up along the Indo-China border.
      • These roads are a part of the Char Dham project.
      • The court has allowed the govt to widen the road to 10 m, as opposed to the earlier limit of 5.5 m.
  6. Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal attended the “CII: Partnership Summit -Ministerial Meeting” virtually from New Delhi.
      • The Minister called for enhancing India’s economic ties with the nations of the Southern African Customs Union which consists of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho.
      • India is also reviewing existing FTAs with ASEAN, Japan, Korea to strengthen them and creating enhanced trade alliances with countries like UAE, EU, UK, Israel, Australia, Canada, Russia, Oman and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

State News

  1. Odisha and UN Capital Development Fund’s Global Centre for Financial Health have partnered for establishing Mission Shakti Living Lab for ensuring economic empowerment of women.
      • Through the lab, awareness about better planning, borrowing, savings, spending etc. will be spread among women by using the digital technologies and e-commerce.
      • Eligible beneficiaries – self-help groups and households
  2. Tamil Nadu and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed a Record of Discussions (RoD) for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in the state.
      • This project will focus on strengthening the managerial and technical capabilities of health personnel with respect to NCD prevention and control.
      • According to UNICEF’s data, the death rate of NCDs is 63% of all deaths and the probability of death from NCDs between the ages of 30 to 70 is 23%.
      • JICA has been supporting the “Tamil Nadu Urban Health Care Project” through the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) loan to improve the quality of urban healthcare services by developing health facilities.
  3. Uttar Pradesh has approved the Atma Nirbhar Krishak Development Scheme for boosting the agriculture sector.
      • It will be applicable from the current financial year i.e., 2021-22 till 2031-32.
      • 1,475 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) will be established in each development block, in the next three years.
      • Central govt has allocated Rs 12,000 crore fund to Uttar Pradesh govt under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF). This scheme is funded from that only.
      • State’s overall expenditure in this scheme – Rs 1,220.92 crore
      • This scheme will also provide loans for investment in project related to the development of post-harvest infrastructural facility (similar to AIF).
  4. Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has declared an area of 454.65 square kilometres around the boundary of Askot Wildlife Sanctuary in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand as the Askot Wildlife Sanctuary Eco-sensitive Zone (ESZ).
      • The Askot Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as Musk Deer Park.
  5. Ladakh has received its first ever FM radio station in the capital city Leh.
      • All India Radio was founded in 1936 in Delhi.
      • India celebrates the Public Service Broadcasting Day on November 12 to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s first and only visit to the All India Radio on November 12, 1947.
  6. Maharashtra, in partnership with UNICEF, has introduced the curriculum on environment for students of classes I to VIII, under the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan.
      • The Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan aims to inculcate climate-conscious and green values in the next generation of young minds.
  7. The concept of ‘Solar Hamam’ has been introduced in the Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Uttarakhand.
      • Solar Hamam is aimed at providing clean energy solutions to households in the cold mountainous regions for heating purposes and also to achieve forest conservation, a solar water-heating system.
      • In the higher Himalayan region, 50% of fuelwood is consumed for the purpose of heating and is one of the major reasons for forests degradation.

International News

  1. World Trade Organization’s (WTO) dispute panel has accused India of violating rules of the Agreement on Agriculture by providing excessive subsidies to its sugarcane farmers.
      • In 2019, Brazil, Australia and Guatemala had accused India of providing more subsidies than 10% of the value of production limit.
      • India is going to appeal to the Appellate Body of the WTO against the panel’s report. Since, the Appellate Body of WTO is not functioning effectively at present, the resolution to this case is still a far flung achievement.
      • India is the world’s second largest sugarcane producing country after Brazil.
      • Indian government has approved a subsidy of $475 million for the 2020-2021 sugarcane growing season.
      • India’s sugarcane production for 2020-21 season is estimated at 25 million tonnes by the fourth advance estimate of the Agriculture Ministry. In comparison to this, the total food grain production is estimated at 308.65 million tonnes.
  2. Malta has become the first EU country to legalise the cultivation and personal use of cannabis.
      • Uruguay was the first country in the world to legalise cannabis for personal use in 2013, followed by Canada in 2018.

  3. World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has recognized a new Arctic temperature record of 38ºC (100.4°F) which was recorded in June 2020 in the Russian town of Verkhoyansk (in Siberia).
      • Impact – devastating fires, massive sea ice loss and playing a major role in 2020 being one of the three warmest years on record.
      • Average temperatures over Arctic Siberia reached as high as 10 °C above normal for much of summer last year.
      • In 2020, there was also a new temperature record (18.3°C) for the Antarctic continent.
      • The temperature was recorded by WMO Archive of Weather and Climate Extremes.
      • The highest temperature was recorded at 54.4°C in both 2020 and 2021 in the world’s hottest place, Death Valley in California.
      • In the European continent, a new reported temperature record of 48.8°C was recorded in the Italian island of Sicily this summer.
      • The Arctic is among the fastest warming regions in the world and is heating more than twice the global average.
      • WMO has added a new category of “highest recorded temperature at or north of 66.5⁰, the Arctic Circle” in its international Archive of Weather and Climate Extremes.

      • For this, the bank partnered with NPCI.
      • It is based on NFC based technology.
      • The device will provide contactless payments of up to ₹5000 in all NFC enabled PoS devices.
