  1. 7th Foreign Office Consultations was held between India and Chile in Santiago.
      • The Indian side was led by Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs Riva Ganguly Das and the Chilean side was led by Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile Ms. Carolina Valdivia Torres.
      • Both sides agreed to hold the next round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi.
  2. 17th edition of the Indo-US Economic Summit ‘Bouncing Back-Resilient Recovery Path Post Covid-19’ was held recently.
      • According to the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, the bilateral trade between India and the US has grown from $16 billion to $149 billion in the last two decades.
      • The trade is projected to reach $500 billion by 2025.
      • At the end of July, 2nd Indo-US Services Summit was organised by Indo American Chamber of Commerce.

State News

  1. UAE-based DP World has signed an MoU with Tamil Nadu govt for investing around Rs 2,000 crore for establishing a slew of projects in the state.
      • DP World is the World’s leading port and terminal operator.
      • The projects include a container terminal, cold storage and seafood processing zone, free trade zone with an integrated rail siding, minor port in the Eastern Coast of Tamil Nadu, inland container depots (ICDs) in Erode, Karur and Tiruppur.
  2. Tamil Nadu has passed a bill to amend the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959 to make the encroachment of properties belonging to religious institutions a cognisable and non-bailable offence.

Defence News

  1. Indian Navy has handed over a Passenger Variant Dornier (PVD) aircraft on lease to the Maritime Air Squadron of the National Coast Guard of Mauritius.
  2. India-Africa Defence Dialogue, which will be held alongside DefExpo 2022, has “India – Africa: Adopting Strategy for Synergizing and Strengthening Defence and Security Cooperation” as its theme.
      • The first edition of the dialogue was held in DefExpo 2020.
      • Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses will be the knowledge partner of this dialogue.
  3. India will soon launch its first satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship – INS Dhruv.
      • INS Dhruv (10,000-tonne vessel) will be commissioned from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
      • Dhruv is India’s first naval vessel that is capable of tracking nuclear missiles at a long range in the Indo-Pacific region.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has signed an MoU with the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) to ease buying of steel for MSME and accelerate the distribution of steel products to MSME hubs.
      • This is NSIC’s first MoU with a private entity.
  2. Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare has signed 5 MoU with private companies, which are CISCO, Ninjacart, Jio Platforms Limited, ITC limited, and NCDEX e-Markets limited.
      • The MoU have been signed for Digital Agriculture Mission, which aims to modernize the agriculture by infusing technologies to increase the farmer’s income.
      • The Mission will run from 2021-2025 to establish a digital ecosystem for agriculture based on AI, blockchain, remote sensing and GIS technology.

International News

  1. India and Brunei Darussalam have co-chaired the 18th ASEAN-India Economic Ministers Consultations, which was held virtually on 14th September, 2021.
  2. UN has convened a high-level ministerial event in Geneva, Switzerland on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
      • Over $1.2 billion was pledged for providing aid for the Afghanistan humanitarian crisis.
      • UN has also urged for USD 606 million donations for the crisis in Afghanistan.
  3. UK, US, and Australian PM have launched ‘AUKUS’ – a new trilateral security partnership for the Indo-Pacific.
      • Purpose – to deepen diplomatic, security, and defence cooperation between these three countries in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China.
      • The partnership will facilitate development of nuclear-powered submarines by Australia with help from the U.K. and the U.S.
      • The nuclear powered submarines will be built in Adelaide, Australia, in close cooperation with the U.K. and the U.S.

Reports & Indices

  1. World Bank has released the “Groundswell Part 2 : Acting on Internal Climate Migration” report.
      • The first Groundswell was published in 2018.
      • This second report has focused on three regions – Middle East and North Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
      • As per the report, 216 million people will be forced to migrate from their countries due to their climate migrants by 2050 across all six regions.
      • This represents almost 3% of these regions’ total projected population.
      • Sub-Saharan Africa would see the highest number of internal climate migrants (almost 4.2% of the total population), followed by East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, and North Africa and the other regions.

  1. RBI has announced the third cohort of Regulatory Sandbox on the theme of MSME lending.
      • The eligibility norms for applications under sandbox – net worth requirement set at ₹10 lakh, and also included Partnership firms and Limited Liability Partnership (LLPs) to participate in the RS.
      • The theme of the first cohort was Retail Payments and second cohort’s theme was Cross Border Payments.

  3. IRDAI has issued a license to Hero Insurance Broking India Private Limited to conduct all types of general insurance business, including health and life insurance.
      • Further, IRDAI has allowed insurance companies to sell and renew short term Covid related insurance policies till March 2022.
  4. The Central Government has appointed 10 top global and Indian merchant banks to manage the initial public offer of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India.
      • These merchant banks will form a syndicate and advise DIPAM on the timing and floor price for the IPO.

  5. According to the ASSOCHAM-Crisil study named ‘Reinforcing the code’, the gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) of banks are expected to cross Rs 10 lakh crore by March 2022.
      • NPAs are expected to rise to 8.5-9% by March 2022.
