- The turtle, native to India and Bangladesh, is at a high risk of extinction.

- Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 44,000 crores in Arunachal Pradesh.
- Three highway projects will be developed with this assistance, which are a two-lane Frontier Highway (1465 km) alongside the Sino-India border, a two-lane inter-connectivity corridor (1,048 km), and a two-lane Brahmakund (Parshuram Kund) to Chowkham road (61 km).
- The state has also signed an MOU with National Highways Logistics Management Ltd for the development of infrastructure in the state.
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched Mission Basundhara 2.0 for granting land rights.
- Under Mission Basundhara 2.0, a total of eight services related to the land rights would be provided to the public in digital mode.
- Jammu and Kashmir administration has launched the Integrated Sheep Development Scheme for modernization and promotion of the sheep farming sector.
- India Hydrogen Alliance (IH2A) and the state government of Kerala have partnered to set up a $575 million green hydrogen hub in Kochi in southern India.
- The hub is expected to house a 60 tonne/day hydrogen plant with a 150-megawatt (MW) electrolyser and other storage and infrastructure facilities.
- The Kochi hub is expected to create production, storage, transmission, and end-use infrastructure for green hydrogen within a 50km radius cluster in Kochi.
- In July, IH2A had proposed a roadmap for the creation of 25 national green hydrogen projects and five hydrogen hubs in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh by 2025.

- India will need to invest $840 billion over the next 15 years (or an average of $55 billion per annum) to upgrade its urban infrastructure if it is to effectively meet the needs of its fast-growing population in cities.
- Only 5% of the infrastructure needs of Indian cities are currently being financed through private sources.
- Currently, the central and state governments finance more than 75% of city infrastructure, while urban local bodies (ULB) finance 15% through their own surplus revenues.
- By 2036, as many as 600 million people will be living in cities in India, representing 40% of the population.

- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has released the “Mid-Year Trends” report.
- The report analyses changes and trends in forced displacement during the first six months of 2022.
- The total number of refugees worldwide rose by 24% from 25.7 million at the end of 2021 to 32 million by mid-2022, largely due to refugees from Ukraine fleeing the war in their country.
- This total includes nearly 24.5 million refugees, 2.2 million people in refugee-like situations, and some 5.3 million other people in need of international protection.
- UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs has released the “World Population Prospects 2022” report (27th edition).
- The global population has reached 8 billion.
- As per this report, the world population is expected to increase to 5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.
- The world is expected to reach 10.4 billion by 2080s and remain at that level till 2100.
- More than half of the projected increase in the global population between 2022 and 2050 is expected to be concentrated in just eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania.
- The population of older persons is increasing both in numbers and as a share of the total.
- The share of the global population aged 65 years or above is projected to rise from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050.
Banking and Economy

- Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the Report on Municipal Finances.
- As per the report, the rapid growth of urbanisation in India has not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in urban infrastructure, which is reflected in the performance of the urban local bodies, especially Municipal Corporations.
- While the size of the municipal budgets in India is much smaller than in other countries, revenues are dominated by property tax collections and devolution of taxes and grants from upper levels of government, resulting in a lack of financial autonomy.
- Municipal Corporations’ current expenditure in the form of establishment expenses, administrative costs and interest and finance charges is rising, but capital expenditure is minimal.
- Municipal Corporations mostly rely on borrowings from banks and financial institutions and loans from Centre/State governments to finance their resource gaps in the absence of a well-developed market for municipal bonds.
- Municipal Corporations need to adopt sound and transparent accounting practices with proper monitoring and documentation of various receipt and expenditure items, and explore different innovative bond and land-based financing mechanisms to augment their resources.
