International News

  1. European Union has proposed to enact the world’s first pollution-import tax (also known as the ‘Carbon Border Tax’) on global competitors.
      • The tax is expected to be imposed by 2026. It is going to affect carbon intensive goods such as steel, cement, fertiliser, and aluminium etc.
      • Europe wants to cut its emissions by 55% by 2030 on the way to net-zero by 2050. To do that, energy-intensive industries are being charged for polluting.
      • Under this tax mechanism, EU will levy a tax on products (which are imported from other countries) based on their carbon footprint. Thus, products which involve high carbon emission during their production or final consumption will have to pay a tax, if it wants to enter Europe.
      • EU wants to encourage the world to adopt clean environmental production methods and avoid carbon leakage (means companies shift their production activities to other countries with loose climate policies to avoid compliance with stringent climate rules of one country).
      • This will also give a competitive advantage to Europe’s domestic companies as their products will now become cheaper. Therefore, in order to avoid that, EU needs to implement strategies, carbon emission cuts, limits on carbon trading etc. on its own domestic industries as well.
      • However, implementation of this tax is still a major concern due to WTO’s rules of trade.
      • This tax was first proposed by French President Jacques Chirac in 2007.
