  1. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the Deep Ocean Mission of the Ministry of Earth Sciences to explore the deep ocean for resources and develop deep-sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources.
      • Estimated Budget – Rs 4,077-crores for 5 years
      • Nodal Ministry for Implementation of the Mission – M/o of Earth Sciences
      • Focus – to build technologies for this mission indigenously
      • United Nations has declared the 2021-2030 as the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
      • There are six components of the mission: –
A) Development of Technologies for Deep Sea Mining, and Manned Submersible Vehicle:
• A manned submersible vehicle will be developed to carry three people to a depth of 6,000 metres in the ocean.
• Apart from India, only a very few countries have acquired this capability.
• An Integrated Mining System will also be developed for mining Polymetallic Nodules from a depth of 6,000 metres in the central Indian Ocean.
• This exploration will pave the way for commercial exploitation of seabed minerals.
• Commercial exploitation of the minerals in the seabed needs to be done sustainably to prevent losses to marine ecosystem, biodiversity, and geology.
• Therefore, International Seabed Authority of the UN will develop a code (guidelines) to ensure sustainable mining in the seabed. Only after the code is releases, commercial seabed mining can be done.
B) Development of Ocean Climate Change Advisory Services:
• Through the mission, technology will be developed to provide weather forecast for the ocean and surrounding areas on seasonal to decadal time scales.
C) Technological innovations for exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity:
• The mission will also develop technologies that can help in exploration of new species of flora and fauna in the seabed.
• Also, technologies for conserving the flora and fauna of ocean will be developed.
D) Deep Ocean Survey and Exploration:
• Under this component, potential sites of multi-metal Hydrothermal Sulphides mineralisation along the Indian Ocean mid-oceanic ridges will be explored and identified.
E) Energy and freshwater from the ocean:
• This component will focus on the developing technologies for offshore Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) powered desalination plant.
F) Advanced Marine Station for Ocean Biology:
• This component will focus on training and guiding experts in the field of ocean biology and engineering.
• The human resource will, then, be put to research on on-site business incubator facilities in the field of ocean sciences
  1. Minister for Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda has launched the “Sankalp Se Siddhi – Mission Van Dhan” at TRIFED Head Office in New Delhi.
      • Through the mission, TRIFED aims to expand its operations for the development of tribal people on a mission mode.
      • TRIFED will use various schemes of different ministries and departments for accelerating the implementation of “Sankalp Se Siddhi – Mission Van Dhan” on a mission mode.
      • Through this mission, 50,000 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras, 3000 Haat Bazaars, 600 Godowns, 200 Mini TRIFOOD Units, 100 Common Facility Centres, 100 TRIFOOD parks, 100 SFURTI clusters, 200 Tribes India retail stores, e-commerce platforms for TRIFOOD and Tribes India brands will be established.
      • Also, Shri Munda inaugurated 7 more Tribes India outlets, 2 in Jagdalpur, 3 in Ranchi (Chhattisgarh), 1 in Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) and 1 at Sarnath (UP). The Sarnath outlet is the first successful collaboration with the Ministry of Culture at an ASI heritage site.
      • With these outlets, the total number of Tribes India outlets have gone up to 141.
  2. India Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Malaria No More (an NGO) have launched India Interagency Expert Committee (IEC) on Malaria and Climate.
      • The committee will explore and advance climate-based solutions for accelerating the elimination of the vector-borne disease from the country.
      • Spread of Vector-borne diseases like Malaria are largely dependent on the weather conditions. Therefore, this group will study the weather situation, which are conducive for malaria, and then develop solution to prevent the spread.
      • India aims to eliminate Malaria by 2030.
      • IMD will be providing weather data for issuing malaria forecasts. A pilot project has been started in Odisha’s Koraput and Malkangiri districts.

  1. Madhya Pradesh has launched ‘Yuva Shakti Corona Mukti Abhiyan’ to create awareness about the COVID pandemic.
      • In the Yuva Shakti Corona Mukti Abhiyan, college teachers and around 16 lakh students will be made aware of corona infection by learning Covid appropriate behaviour and vaccination.

  1. Jalgaon bananas were exported to Dubai, UAE, in a major boost to exports of Geographical Indications (GI) certified agricultural produce.
      • In 2016, Jalgaon Banana got GI certification. They are grown in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra.
      • The 22 metric tonnes of GI-certified Jalgaon banana were sourced from Tandalwadi village, part of Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, a banana cluster identified under the Agri Export Policy.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have signed an MoU for developing seaplane services in the country.
      • A Coordination Committee with officials from civil aviation ministry, MoPSW, and tourism ministry will be set up for timely completion of operationalisation of seaplane services across the country.
      • Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched India’s first seaplane service between the Statue of Unity near Kevadiya in Gujarat’s Narmada district and Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad.
  2. Emirates Group Security (UAE’s company) and GMR Aviation Academy (GMRAA), two leading aviation training providers based in Dubai and India respectively, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
      • Purpose – to promote cooperation for the development and exchange of information, technical expertise, and experiences in aviation security.
      • GMRAA is part of the GMR Group, a leading infrastructure development company and fourth largest private airport company in the world.
      • The aim will be to educate and train aviation security personnel in accordance with national and international legislation, in a bid to address new and emerging challenges being faced by the industry.

  1. China has launched Shenzhou-12 spacecraft (in English, Shenzhou means Divine Vessel) with three astronauts to its space station named Tiangong.
      • The crew will stay at the space station for 3 months.
      • The spacecraft will be launched on the Long March 2F rocket from Gobi Desert.

  1. India has extended its 4th Line of Credit (LOC) worth USD 108.28 million to Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) for construction of their new Parliament building.
      • With this the total value extended to Eswatini as a soft loan has reached USD 176.58 million.
      • These LOCs are being utilized towards the projects of information technology, disaster management, agriculture, and construction.
  2. ICICI Bank has launched a first of its kind ‘ICICI STACK for Corporates’, a comprehensive set of digital banking solutions for corporates and their entire ecosystem including promoters, group companies, employees, dealers, vendors and all other stakeholders.
      • The platform aims to meet all banking requirements of corporates and their entire ecosystem.
