Let’s Understand:
Q.) What is ETF?
Ans – An Exchange Traded Fund is an investment instrument.
⚬ ETFs can only by bought from an Exchange like BSE, NSE etc.
⚬ It collects money from investors and invest in an index, sector (like in the stocks of a group of pharma, IT companies etc.), commodity (like gold, silver) etc.)
⚬ After investment, the ETF manager / administrator allots Net Asset Value (NAV), means units in proportion to the investment, to investors.
⚬ The value / return of each and every NAV, or the entire ETF, varies on a daily basis like a stock because it is based on an underlying asset.
⚬ As and when the value of that underlying asset (be it any stock index like Nifty or Sensex, or commodity like gold or silver) changes, the return of the ETF also changes.
Similarities between Shares and ETF:
⚬ ETFs resemble shares as the corpus of ETF cannot be changed after launch, just like the number of shares can’t be increased.
⚬ Both ETFs and Shares can only be bought and sold via exchanges.
⚬ Value of shares and ETFs vary on a real-time basis as ETF is based on the other asset’s value.
Differences between Mutual fund and ETF:
⚬ It looks like MF because of certain similarities, but it is not so.
⚬ Like MFs, ETFs also gather fund from investors and invest in other assets. But, there are a few differences between these two.
■ MFs are bought from Asset Management Companies whereas these ETFs are bought from proper Exchanges.
■ Investor can anytime get his/her money back by selling the MF with the help of AMC. But, in case of ETFs, the selling takes place at the exchange, akin to shares. Therefore, in case of low demand or market slump, the ETF may not get sold at the desired price.
Q.) What is an ETF Fund of Funds?
Ans – When the underlying asset of an ETF is another ETF, then it is called a Fund of Funds.
⚬ For example – Invesco India’s - Invesco CoinShares Global Blockchain ETF Fund of Funds’ – underlying asset is Ireland-based Invesco CoinShares Global Blockchain UCITS ETF.
Q.) How will this work?
Ans - Invesco CoinShares Global Blockchain ETF FoF will gather money from investors in India.
⚬ Then, the ETF FoF will invest the money in the UCITS ETF.
⚬ Now, this UCITS ETF’s underlying asset is the blockchain based sector. That means, the ETF tracks the performance (stocks) of companies in blockchain sector.
