  1. Central govt has launched ‘Customized Crash Course programme for Covid 19 Frontline workers’ to train about 1 lakh frontline workers.
      • The training programme would be conducted in 111 training centres spread over 26 states.
      • Under the program, six courses have been designed by experts, which are Home Care Support, Basic Care Support, Advanced Care Support, Emergency Care Support, Sample Collection Support, and Medical Equipment Support.

  1. On the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, 100 women from 33 village panchayats of Taranagar block in Rajasthan’s Churu district have planted 5,100 saplings under the Harit Marubhumi (Green Desert Land) initiative.
      • Greening of Desert means to restore the biological ecosystem in desert by farming, forestry, reclaiming of natural water systems, and other life-supporting measures.
      • Shyam Sunder Jyani (Rajasthan-based climate activist) won the UN Land for Life Award 2021 for creating awareness among the aforementioned citizens on plantation of saplings as part of the Familial Forestry drive.
      • Jyani is leading the Familial Forestry concept in Rajasthan where each tree is considered a part of the family.

About the Award:

    • Launched at the UNCCD COP (Conference of Parties) 10 in 2011, the Land for Life Award is considered as the world’s highest reward regarding land conservation and restoration. This year’s theme was “Healthy Land, Healthy Lives”.
    • UNCCD was established in 1994. It is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management under the UN.
  1. Odisha has launched e-Pathsala and e-Mulyankan facilities for school students.
      • The e-Pathsala is an online learning platform that has repositories of e-contents in the form of documents, audios and videos.
      • The e-Mulyankan platform is a repository of practice tests for evaluation of students. The teachers can conduct tests, mock and final examinations through the platform.
      • Also, the School and Mass Education Department has signed an MoU with Central Square Foundation to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy among children in Class I and III.
      • Besides, the government is all set to start live YouTube streaming for students from Class I to VIII from June 21. Already, the students of Class IX and X are enjoying YouTube classes.
      • The department also plans to activate the Odisha Shiksha Sanjog, a WhatsApp-based programme that allows the teachers to share e-content and materials with students.
      • The state govt will also launch radio pathsala and telecast video lessons under Shiksha Darpan for Class I to XII on Doordarshan.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. Pune-based Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIMN), Nagpur have signed an MoU to build competencies and generate industry-oriented knowledge in transport management.
      • The collaboration will also assist in achieving the “vision zero goal in road safety.”
      • The basic purpose of the collaboration is to help the young managers and engineers in the very early stage of their careers to meet various challenges.

International News

  1. Polar-Areas Stellar-Imaging in Polarisation High-Accuracy Experiment (PASIPHAE) is an international collaborative sky surveying project to study the polarisation in the light coming from millions of stars.
      • It is being led by an Indian astronomer.
      • The name is inspired from Pasiphae, the daughter of Greek Sun God Helios, who was married to King Minos.
      • Participants in the project – Scientists from the University of Crete, Greece, Caltech, USA, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), India, the South African Astronomical Observatory and the University of Oslo, Norway.
      • The project is led by the Institute of Astrophysics, Greece.
      • Funding – The Infosys Foundation, India, Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Greece and USA’s National Science Foundation have each provided a grant of $1 million, along with contributions from the European Research Council and the National Research Foundation in South Africa.

  1. NITI Aayog has released the 3rd edition of the Sustainable Development Index 2021.
      • Title of the report – SDG India Index and Dashboard 2020-21: Partnerships in the decade of action
      • Parameters – The index is based on 115 indicators that are aligned to the Ministry of Statistics’ National Indicator Framework. The indicators incorporate 16 out of 17 SDGs with a qualitative assessment of Goal 17.
      • States and UTs are classified into following categories based on their score:
          • Aspirant: 0 – 49
          • Performer: 50 – 64
          • Front runner: 65 – 99
          • Achiever: 100
      • Overall score of India – 66 (from 60 in 2019-20 report) due to improvement in Goal 6 (Clean water and sanitation) and Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy).

      • Total – 163 countries
      • Top – Iceland (score – 1.1)
      • India’s rank – 135th (score – 2.553)
          • In 2020, India was ranked 139th.
          • India is a low-peaceful country.
      • Parameters – 23 indicators divided into 3 categories of Societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and degree of militarisation.

    • The average global peacefulness has declined by 0.07%. Middle East and North Africa regions is least peaceful whereas Europe is the most peaceful region.

    • The global economic impact of violence was $14.96 trillion PPP in 2020, equivalent to 11.6% of global GDP or $1,942 per person. The year-on-year increase was primarily due to higher levels of military expenditure.
    • The global economic impact of violence worsened for the second year in a row, increasing by 0.2% or $32 billion from 2019 to 2020. However, it is still $535.9 billion lower than in 2007.

    • All the countries have shown reversal in progress towards achieving the SDGs for the first time since 2015 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
    • Before the pandemic hit, significant progress had been achieved on the SDGs in many regions and on many goals – especially in East and South Asia, which has progressed more on the SDG Index than any other region since the goals’ adoption in 2015.

      • Google Pay has already allowed customers of Kotak Mahindra Bank, SBI Cards and Axis Bank to link their cards with the payment app and make tokenized payments.

      • Recently, Odisha has seen natural nesting of gharials in the Mahanadi, in the Baladamara area near Satkosia range, for the first time since they were introduced in its rivers back in 1975.
      • Gharial is a critically endangered species.
      • Primarily, there are three types of crocodiles in India – mugger (or marshy) crocodile, saltwater crocodile, and gharials – and Odisha is the only state to have all the three species of them.

      • Gastronomy means the practice or art of choosing, cooking, and eating good food.
