Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), India’s sugar production is projected to be 5 million tonnes in the 2022-23 marketing season (October-September).
      • The increase would be equivalent to 2% compared to the year-ago period.
      • Sugar output in Uttar Pradesh is estimated to be 3 million tonnes, Maharashtra at 15 million tonnes and Karnataka at 7 million tonnes during the 2022-23 season.
      • Since the target of 12% blending is expected to be achieved, sugar diversion towards the production of ethanol is estimated to be higher by 32% at 45 lakh tonnes in the current season as against 34 lakh tonnes during the 2021-22 season.
      • A total of about 545 crore litres of ethanol would be required and supplied during the current season.

      • Across 111 countries, 2 billion people—19.1% of the total global population—live in acute multidimensional poverty. Half of these people (593 million) are children under age 18.
      • Poorest regions – Sub-Saharan Africa (nearly 579 million), followed by South Asia (385 million)

      India’s Case –

• India - 415 million people exited poverty between 2005/06 and 2019/21• The 2019/2021 data show that about 16.4% of India’s population lives in poverty. An additional 18.7% is classified as vulnerable to multidimensional poverty
• India’s MPI Score - 0.069• India is the only country in South Asia in which poverty is significantly more prevalent among female-headed households (19.7%) than among male-headed households (15.9%).
• The poorest states reduced poverty the fastest, and deprivations in all indicators fell significantly among poor people• The intensity of deprivation in India, which is the average deprivation score among people living in multidimensional poverty, is 42%.
• Poverty among children fell faster in absolute terms, although India still has the highest number of poor children in the world (97 million, or 21.8% of children ages 0–17 in India)• India has by far the largest number of poor people worldwide (228.9 million), followed by Nigeria (96.7 million projected in 2020)
• India has achieved the Sustainable Development Goal target 1.2.-

  • The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed the reduction in poverty level back to 10 years. The data after Covid-19 pandemic has not been taken into consideration.
  1. National Statistical Office (NSO) has released a report on value of output from agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors.
      • Andhra Pradesh has registered more than 90% growth in nine years to 2019-20, the highest among all the states, with ₹2 lakh crore approx. combined gross value output (GVO) in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors.
      • Andhra Pradesh recorded 92.4% growth in GVO of the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors but its growth in crops (agri and commercial both) was 48%.
      • Madhya Pradesh was the top State in recording the highest 56.7% growth in only crops (agri and commercial both) in 2019-20.
      • Kerala is the only state to have recorded negative growth of over 10%.
      • The GVO was higher than the growth at the national level in as many as 10 States, including Tripura and Mizoram and two union territories — Lakshadweep and Daman and Diu.
      • The all-India GVO in agri- and allied sectors was 30.6% up at Rs 24 lakh crore approx. in 2019-20 against ₹19 lakh crore in 2011-12.

  1. State Bank of India (SBI) has set up its first premium dedicated branch for start-ups at Koramangala in Bengaluru to facilitate and support start-up companies in the city.
      • The branch has also entered into MOUs with the government of Karnataka initiatives like the Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS) and Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) to support the entire start-up ecosystem in the state of Karnataka.
