  1. According to the National Family Health Survey (NHFS) 5 phase-II, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR), or the average number of children per woman, has declined further from 2.2 reported in 2015-16 to 0 at the all-India level.
      • An ideal TRF ratio is 2.1, which indicates a sustained level of population.
      • India has fallen below the ideal TFR. A fall to 2 means India has achieved the goal of population stabilisation.
        • This means India will possibly still become the most populous country in the world — it was expected somewhere between 2024-2028 — but it will now be delayed.
      • The NFHS-5 assesses 2019-21 period.
      • Urban area fertility rate – 1.6
      • Rural area fertility rate – 2.1
      • This phase – II of NFHS-5 covers 14 states and UTs. The phase-1 findings of 22 states and Union Territories were released in December last year.

      • Under the Operation, several Indian and foreign nationals suspected to be indulging in smuggling gold into India from Hong Kong using the air cargo route have been identified.
  3. Union Minister for MSME, Shri Narayan Rane, launched the Special Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (SCLCSS) for Services Sector in Guwahati.
      • Purpose – It aims to help the enterprises in the services sector in meeting the technology related requirements.
      • 25% capital subsidy for procurement of Plant & Machinery and service equipment will be provided to the SC-ST MSEs, through institutional support.
  4. 56th Conference of Director Generals of Police (DGPs) and Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs) was held at Police Headquarters in Lucknow, UP.
      • During the Conference, an announcement was made for constituting a High-Power Police Technology Mission, under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, to adopt future technologies for grassroots policing requirements.
  5. Ministry of Tribal Affairs and CBSE have launched a certificate course on Experiential Learning for the 21st Century for Educators from CBSE and Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs).
      • The course has been launched in collaboration with Tata Trusts, Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and Mahatma Gandhi International School (MGIS), Ahmedabad.
      • The program will be deployed for 350 educators in 6 States.
      • The Experiential Learning for 21st Century Programme, a 6 week program, is an online certificate course for educators – teachers, school heads, and principals to help them adapt classroom learning to real life experiences.
      • Select teachers will be recognized as “Teacher Leaders” by MoTA.
  6. Ministry of Home Affairs has released its annual ranking of Best Police Stations in India.
      • The ranking is prepared by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD).

      • The ‘Quality Control Laboratory’ has been established at the Institute of Food Security (IFS), FCI, Gurugram (Haryana).
      • The laboratory has been set up under the guidance of the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru in Karnataka.
      • Fortified rice distribution will be completed by 2024 through ICDS, Mid-Day Meal, and various other schemes.

State News

  1. Odisha govt has signed an MoU with Delhi-based Save Life Foundation (SLF), an NGO working in the field of road safety, to reduce accident deaths.
      • SLF has been tasked to identify accident-prone stretches, find out the causes of accidents and recommend remedial measures to create ‘zero fatality corridors’ in the state.
      • The MoU aims at reducing road deaths in the next three years.
  2. Tamil Nadu Government has constituted a FinTech Governing Council to facilitate the establishment of FinTech companies in the State.
      • The Industries Minister and the Chief Secretary will be its Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson respectively.
  3. Union Minister of Ayush and Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced a slew of major initiatives for promotion of AYUSH in Arunachal Pradesh.
      • The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR) at Pasighat in the state will be expanded.
      • Gradually, Regional Raw Drug Repository (RRDR) & Museum, Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF), State of Art Panchakarma Treatment & Research Centre will be set up in Northeast India.

Defence News

  1. Indian Navy has conducted a security exercise, called “Prasthan”, in the Offshore Development Area (ODA) off the coast of Mumbai.
      • The exercise, conducted by the Headquarters Western Naval Command, is held every six months.
      • Purpose of the exercise – to integrate maritime stakeholders, including the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, ONGC, Port Trust, Customs, State Fisheries department and Marine Police, for refining standard operating procedures for response to various contingencies that could occur in the ODAs.
  2. Ministry of Defence signed a contract for Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for procuring two simulators for Jaguar Aircrafts at a cost of Rs 357 crores.
      • Under the contract, two Fixed Base Full Mission Simulators (FBFMS) will be procured for Jaguar aircraft from HAL for the training of pilots of Jaguar fighter.
      • The simulators would be installed at Air Force stations in Jamnagar and Gorakhpur.
  3. 15th edition of the biennial trilateral coast guard exercise named ‘Dosti’ involving India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka is being held in Male, Maldives.
      • It has been 30 years since the beginning of this exercise.
  4. Sagar Shakti exercise was held among Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, Border Security Force, Gujarat Police and the Marine Police in Kutch Peninsula.
      • The high-intensity exercise was organised by the Indian Army’s Southern Command.
      • This exercise aims to test the combat readiness of the agencies in a real-time scenario.
  5. PM Narendra Modi has handed over an advanced electronic warfare system named ‘Shakti’ to the Indian Navy in the Jhansi city of Uttar Pradesh.
      • Shakti is meant for interception, detection, classification, identification and jamming of conventional and modern radars.
      • It is developed by DRDO for the capital warships of the Indian Navy.
      • This hand-over ceremony is a part of the 3-day ‘Raksha Samarpan Parv’.
      • 12 Shakti Systems, developed by Defence Electronics Research Laboratory of DRDO, are under production at Bharat Electronics Ltd.
      • First Shakti System was installed at INS Visakhapatnam and the second one is being installed at INS Vikrant.

  1. Russia has successfully tested its hypersonic cruise missile – Zircon – from frigate ship, after testing it from nuclear submarine.
      • Russia also destroyed one of its own low-earth orbit satellite by using the Anti- Satellite Missile named Nudol.
  2. Barbados had become the first government to acquire virtual land and create a virtual “embassy” on metaverse.
      • For this, the govt of Barbados has signed an agreement with Decentraland, a blockchain metaverse platform, to establish a digital platform.

  2. Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved USD 150 million loans to India for implementation of the Sustainable Urban Services Program for the Chennai metropolitan area (CMA).
      • India is the largest beneficiary of AIIB and the bank has so far approved 29 projects for India worth 6.8 billion USD.
      • The project aims to develop services like water resource management, water supply and sewerage, urban mobility, and solid waste management, and public health.
      • India has applied for a loan of $2 billion for Covid-19 vaccination from ADB and AIIB. Of this, $500 million is to be approved by AIIB.
  3. Network International (an enabler of digital commerce across the Middle East and Africa) has signed an MoU with NPCI International Payments Ltd to explore the implementation of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the UAE.
      • In 2020, UPI facilitated transactions worth $457 billion, which is equivalent to approximately 15% of India’s GDP.
  4. BOB Financial Solutions (BFSL) has partnered with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to launch BoB Credit Cards (Easy and Premier variants) on the RuPay platform.
      • BFSL is a subsidiary of Bank of Baroda.
      • Easy and Premier variants have different benefits. The Premier credit card offers a personal accidental death insurance cover of up to Rs 50 lakh.
  5. Akasa Air has ordered 72 Boeing 737 Max airplanes worth $9 billion at the Dubai Air Show.
  6. The Delhi Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has ruled that domestic taxes cannot be levied if a company doesn’t have any presence in India.
      • This ruling offers the much needed clarity for companies with advertising income.
      • The ruling came out in the case of ESPN.
      • The ITAT maintained that since ESPN did not have a permanent establishment (PE) or a business connection in India, domestic taxes cannot be levied on the company.
