  1. Australia has announced Rs 8.12 crore grant under the Australia-India Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative Partnership to support efforts towards a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
      • Australia is working on the marine ecology pillar of the IPOI with India.
      • Under this multi-year grant programme stakeholders will share expertise and resources, complementing the work under existing regional mechanisms such as ASEAN, the Indian Ocean Rim Association, and the Pacific Islands Forum.
  2. Union Cabinet has approved an exclusive subsidy policy for urea produced through coal gasification by Talcher Fertilizers Ltd.
      • Benefit – for reducing urea imports to the tune of 12.7 lakh tonne per annum.
      • The estimated cost of this first of its kind project in India is about Rs 13,277 crore. Urea is a widely used fertiliser in India.
  3. Central Govt has extended the Rs 50 lakh insurance coverage scheme for healthcare workers under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana for one year.
      • The scheme was ending on March 24.

  1.  Indian Naval Air Squadron 323 (INAS 323), Indian Navy’s first unit of the indigenously-built Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk III, was commissioned at INS Hansa, Goa. 
      • Commander Samik Nundy is the commissioning Commanding Officer of INAS 323.
      • The ALHs are designed and developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. 

Memorandum Of Understanding

  1. Union Cabinet has approved the MoU between Competition Commission of India (CCI) and Administrative Council for Economic Defense of Brazil, (CADE) for extending cooperation.
      • Section 18 of the Competition Act, 2002 permits CCI to enter into any Memorandum or arrangement with any agency of any foreign country for the purpose of discharging its duties or performing its functions under the Act.
      • CCI has also signed similar MoU with USA, Russia, European Union, Australia, Canada, and BRICS.
  2. Union Cabinet has approved signing of an MoU between the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) for mutual recognition of qualification of their members.
      • This MoU will provide Indian CA greater employment opportunities.
      • Also, both organizations will aim to enhance the scope of Accounting in India, Australia and New Zealand.

International News

  1. India has been elected to the three United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) bodies named as Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), the Executive Board of UN Women, and the Executive Board of the World Food Programme.
      • India is a member of the United Nations Commission on Status of Women for four years, 2021 to ’25.
      • In 2020, India was elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on Status of Women, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
      • India’s term to these bodies begins on January 1, 2022.

  1. According to the Global Energy Review 2021 by International Energy Agency (IEA), global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from energy are seen rising nearly 5% in 2021-22.
      • CO2 emissions would rise to 33 billion tonnes this year, up by 1.5 billion tonnes from 2020 levels in the largest single increase in more than a decade.
      • Global energy demand is set to increase by 4.6% in 2021.
      • More than 80% of the projected growth is set to come from Asia, led by China.

  1. E -sports and skill gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL) has acquired New Delhi-based e-sports gaming platform GamingMonk for an undisclosed amount

  2. RBI has announced a ₹1 trillion government securities acquisition programme (G-SAP) 1.0 under which the central bank will purchase government bonds worth ₹1 trillion from the secondary market in the first quarter of 2021-22.
      • G-SAP 1.0 will be conducted alongside other operations such as liquidity adjustment facility, outright open-market operations and Operation Twist.
      • The first purchase of ₹25,000 crore under the multiple price method on 15 April resulted in bond yields rising to 6.12%.
      • This step will be beneficial for the govt vis-a-vis the borrowing target of ₹12.06 trillion in FY22. RBI is the debt manager of the Centre.
  3. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has partnered with Habitat for Humanity International to help microfinance institutions (MFIs) deliver housing loans to low-income families in rural and peri-urban areas of India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
      • An expected 20,000 households will receive housing microloans from partner MFIs in the programme’s first phase to enhance construction quality and climate resilience, including upgrading semi-permanent structures and installing sanitation and water connections.
  4. The Government of Ghana, Bharti Airtel and Millicom International Cellular S.A. have signed a definitive agreement for transfer of ‘AirtelTigo’ (Accra, Ghana) to Government of Ghana.

  5. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India’s crude oil production fell by 5% and natural gas output declined by 8% in the FY21.
      • Crude oil production fell to 30.5 million tonnes in 2020-21 from 32.17 million tonnes in 2019-20.
      • Natural gas production was 28.67 billion cubic meters, which was 8% less than 31.18 bcm output in 2019-20.
      • India is nearly 85% dependent on imports to meet its crude oil needs. India spent $61.9 billion in 2020-21 on import of 198.2 million tonnes of crude oil.
  6. PhonePe has crossed 1 billion transactions on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) infrastructure in March, making it the first player in the country to reach this milestone.

GDP Forecasts

  1. Nomura has downgraded India’s growth projection to 12.6% from the earlier 13.5% for FY22.
      • JPMorgan has also forecasted a 11% GDP growth rate for India against 13% earlier for FY22.
      • Other GDP forecasts – The RBI has projected FY’22 GDP growth at 10.5%, while IMF puts it at 12.5%. The World Bank sees 2021-22 growth at 10.1%.
