  1. US-India hydrogen taskforce has been launched under the aegis of Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) for the exploration of hydrogen.
      • The taskforce has been launched by United States Department of Energy (DOE), the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), along with the US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).
      • US India Strategic Partnership Forum will act as the Secretariat for the Task Force.
      • Dr Ken Vincent is the co-chair of US-India Hydrogen Task Force from US side, and director of Office of Asian Affairs, Office of International Affairs at Department of Energy (DOE).
      • Prakash Chandra Maithani (advisor of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy) is the co-chair of US-India Hydrogen Task Force from India’s side.

    About the India-US Strategic Energy Partnership:

      • India and US launched the Strategic Energy Partnership in New Delhi in April 2018.
      • Four working groups have been created under the Strategic Energy Partnership—oil and gas, power and energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable development.
      • The Partnership will aim to mobilize finance and speed clean energy deployment; innovate on clean technologies, and adapt to the risks of climate-related impacts.
      • The Partnership will proceed along two main tracks: the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership and the Climate Action and Finance Mobilization Dialogue.
      • The clean fuel can be a game changer for India, which imports 85% of its oil and 53% of gas demand.
  2. As per the data from Pew Research Centre and World Bank, the number of poor in India (with income of $2 per day or less in purchasing power parity) has more than doubled to 134 million from 60 million in just a year due to the pandemic-induced recession.
      • India has again become the “country of mass poverty” after 45 years.
      • From 1951 to 1974, the population of the poor increased from 47% to 56% of the total population. Since then, the poverty rate has reduced in India until 2020.
      • In the recent years, India emerged as the country with the highest rate of poverty reduction.
      • In 2019, the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index reported that India lifted 271 million citizens out of poverty between 2006 and 2016.
      • Contrast this with the situation in 2020: the highest global poverty increase happened in India.
      • United Nations estimated the number of poor in the country to be 364 million in 2019, or 28% of the population.

  1. Tamil Nadu government will constitute an “Economic Advisory Council to the Chief Minister” with leading economic experts from all over the world as its members.
      • The council will consist of Nobel laureate Esther Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan, former chief economic advisor to the central government Dr Arvind Subramanian, development economist Jean Dreze and former Union finance secretary Dr S Narayan.
      • The council will advise CM on revitalising the state’s economy and ensure that the benefits of economic growth reach all segments of society.
      • The focus of the state will be on to further diversify the industrial base of the districts and to ensure technological upgradation.
      • Also, an expert committee consisting of industrialists, banking and financial experts and government officials will be constituted to formulate the schemes for revival of MSMEs.

  1. France will assemble the world’s most powerful magnet, known as the Central Solenoid.
      • The parts of this magnet is being developed by US.
      • The magnet is powerful enough to life an aircraft carrier. This magnet will become the heart of the nuclear reactor – ITER.
      • The ITER project was started in 2007 by a group of 35 countries, including India (which has so far invested $2.2 billion in this project to obtain the intellectual property of ITER, after its completion).
      • Core members of ITER – China, the European Union, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States
      • ITER project aims to create energy (akin to creating a mini-sun) by way of fusion. The energy created from ITER will fulfil the energy demands of different nations.
      • ITER means ‘the way’ in Latin. It is located in France.
      • ITER will be completed by 2035.
      • ITER is the world’s largest tokamak. Tokamak is an experimental machine designed to harness the energy of fusion.
      • ITER aims to create 500 MW of fusion power from 50 MW of input heating power. So far, the record of highest fusion power creation is held by European tokamak JET (of 16 MW).
      • Fusion is the process of colliding different elements like Helium, Hydrogen etc. to obtain energy, similar to sun and star.

  1. Bharti Airtel has announced a strategic partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for implementing 5G network solutions for India.
      • Airtel will pilot and deploy the indigenous solution as part of its 5G rollout plans in India, and start the pilot in January 2022.

      • World Refugee Day was held globally for the first time on June 20, 2001, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. It was originally known as Africa Refugee Day.

      • Theme – Yoga For Wellness
      • India has launched m-Yoga mobile app, in partnership with WHO, to fulfil the motto of ‘One World, One Health’.
      • The m-Yoga app will have yoga training videos in different languages for people across the world.
      • Global Yoga Conference 2021 was organised by ‘Mokshayatan Yog Sansthan’ along with the Ministry of AYUSH and Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Central message highlighted during the conference is ‘Be with Yoga, Be at Home’.
      • For the first time, India Post issued a special cancellation stamp to commemorate seventh International Day of Yoga.
