  1. European commercial drone and software developer FIXAR has partnered with Paras Aerospace, a subsidiary of Paras Defence, to explore the domestic unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market in India.
      • As a first step towards this partnership, the company will launch its flagship fixed wing drone FIXAR007 in the country.
      • The initial agreement targets delivery of 150 drones to the operators in India in the next 6-8 months.
  2. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has formed a 9-member expert panel, headed by Vikas Sheel, to prepare a comprehensive tax policy proposal covering all tobacco products from a public health perspective.
      • The panel will suggest various tax rate models for consideration in the preparation of FY23 and future Union budgets.
      • Tobacco at present is a highly taxed commodity. It is kept in the 28% GST slab (other than for tobacco leaves which is taxed at 5%), along with a heavy cess.
      • India has the second largest number (268 million) of tobacco users in the world. Nearly 27% of all cancers in India are due to tobacco.
  3. UPSC has launched a toll-free helpline1800118711 – to help government job aspirants from economically weaker sections and backward classes.
  4. Govt has extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) by six months.
      • The scheme was launched on March 30, 2020 to provide insurance of ₹50 lakh to 22.12 lakh healthcare providers including community health workers and private health workers to insure them against Covid-19.
  5. CERAWeek organized the India Energy Forum 2021.
      • At the forum, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri reiterated the that India should endeavour to become an energy independent country by 2047, the 100th year of India’s independence.

  1. UN Environment Program (UNEP) has released the Production Gap 2021 report.
      • The report assesses the gap between the governments’ plan to produce energy from fossil fuel and their commitments to reduce the use of fossil fuels to meet the Paris Agreement commitments.
      • The first edition of this report was launched in 2019.
      • As per the report, governments across the world are still planning to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than what would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
      • The governments are also planning to increase fossil fuels production by 45% in 2030 than what would be consistent with limiting global warming to 2°C.
  2. The Lancet has released the “2021 report on health and climate change: code red for a healthy future”.
      • As per this report, India’s vulnerability to the extremes of heat was 15% higher in 2019 as compared to 1990.
      • India and Brazil registered the biggest absolute increase in heat-related death between 2018 and 2019.
      • Heat-related mortality for people older than 65 years has reached a record high of almost 3,45,000 deaths globally in 201980.6% higher than in the 2000-05 average.
      • India, China, Indonesia, Egypt and Nigeria were among the five countries where vulnerable populations had the highest exposure to heatwaves.
      • Agricultural workers in countries with low and medium countries lost almost half of the 295 billion potential work hours due to heat in 2020.
      • Warm temperatures are affecting the yield potential of the world’s major staple crops – a 6.0% reduction for maize; 3.0% for winter wheat; 5.4% for soybean; and 1.8% for rice in 2020, relative to 1981–2010, increasing the risk of food insecurity.
      • In 2020, up to 19% of the global land surface was impacted by extreme drought, as compared to 13% during 1950-1999.

      • Microsoft AI Innovate is a 10-week initiative that will support start-ups in India leveraging AI technologies, helping them scale operations, drive innovation, and build industry expertise.
      • Both B2B and B2C start-ups from diverse industries including financial services, healthcare, education, agriculture, space, manufacturing and logistics, retail, and e-commerce can participate in the quarterly cohorts of this programme.
      • The initiative is supported by TiE Mumbai (NPO).
      • Initially, the focus will be on Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) and the manufacturing, logistics for the first two cohorts.
