        • It was launched by AIM, NITI Aayog in collaboration with UNCDF, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and Rabofoundation.

      • The initiative was launched on the occasion of Defence Estates Day (December 16).
      • The module has been developed by the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics (BISAG) under the guidance of Defence Secretary and Director General of Defence Estates.
      • Purpose – to provide all facilities related to water connection of the citizens of Cantonment on this online platform.
  6. Union Cabinet has approved the comprehensive program for the development of semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
      • Objective – To provide incentive support to the companies which are engaged in semiconductor and display manufacturing.
      • Total outlay – Rs.76000 Crore

        • Semiconductor and Display fabrication units – For setting up of Semiconductor and Display fabrication units, incentives worth 50% of the project cost.
        • Compound semiconductor/Sensors – 30% of the capital expenditure
        • Semiconductor design – 50% of expenditure
  7. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has introduced the National Anti-Doping Bill, 2021 in the Lok Sabha.
      • Key features of the bill –
        • Statutory framework for the functioning of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL)
        • Setting up of the NDTL and other dope testing laboratories.
        • Empowering NADA to conduct raids, investigation, sample collection, levying sanctions etc., in accordance with the procedures of Code of Criminal Procedure Act, 1973.
        • Creation of a National Board for Anti-Doping in Sports. Members of the board will be appointed by the Central Govt.
        • NADA and NDTL were constituted under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Now, both these bodies will be dissolved and reconstituted.
        • NADA will be constituted as a body corporate by the same name, headed by a D-G (who will be appointed by the Central Govt), in New Delhi.
      • The NDTL is currently suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for failing to meet technical requirements.
  8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi transferred Rs 1,000 crore to bank accounts of self-help groups under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM).
      • The mission aims to provide women, especially those at the grassroots, with necessary skills, incentives and resources.
      • Over Rs 20 crore was released to more than 1 lakh beneficiaries under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Scheme’, which provides conditional cash transfer to a girl child at different stages of her life.
      • The total remittance is Rs 15,000 per beneficiary.

  1. Jammu and Kashmir administration has signed an MoU with University College Birmingham (UCB) at the India Global Forum, Dubai to enhance the potential of colleges and other educational institutions in the valley.
      • Under this MoU, UCB will be setting up an office in Jammu and Kashmir for tying up with the local educational institutions, facilitating academic exchange programmes while enabling students to secure admissions at reduced fees.

  1. The first set of indigenously developed next-generation Armoured Engineer Reconnaissance Vehicle has been inducted into the Corps of Engineers of Indian Army.
      • Designed by – DRDO
      • Developed by – Ordnance Factory Medak and Bharat Electronics Limited, Pune
      • Reconnaissance means search. Thus, this vehicle will help the Corps to survey the salient features of a region and carry out their engineering tasks.

  1. NITI Aayog has entered into an MoU with United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to address issues related to inclusion of millets in government programmes.
      • The MoU aims at a more diversified food basket under its free food distribution programme with focus on coarse grains and millets.
      • The focus will be on mainstreaming millets and strengthening of climate resilient agriculture for enhanced food and nutrition security in India.
      • Numerous steps have been taken to promote millets including establishment of centre for excellence, integration of nutri-cereals in National Food Security Act and establishment of Millet Mission in multiple states.

International News

  1. NASA has launched its much-awaited James Webb Space Telescope on Ariane 5 rocket, operated by Arianespace, from the ELA-3 facility in French Guiana.
      • The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared observatory that will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, with longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity.
      • Webb is an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
      • The NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre is managing the development effort.
      • The main industrial partner is Northrop Grumman and, the Space Telescope Science Institute is operating Webb after launch.
      • Mission duration is 10 years.
  2. S. Food and Drug Administration approved Apretudeworld’s first injectable medicine to reduce the risk of sexually acquiring HIV.
      • The drug has been developed by ViiV Healthcare (majority of its stake is owned by GSK, Pfizer Inc., and Shionogi Limited).
      • Adults above 35 kg of weight can take the medicine.

  1. World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has released its report on doping and rule violations.
      • As per WADA, India has become the 3rd largest country in doping violation cases in 2019.
      • Most of the doping cases were witnessed in bodybuilding, weightlifting and athletics.
      • In 2019, 152 Anti-doping Rule Violations (ADRVs), accounting for 17% of world’s total, were reported in India.
      • Russia is the top violator, followed by Italy. Due to doping violations, Russia was banned from Tokyo Olympics earlier this year.

  1. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd has acquired a 93% equity share in Indian Gas Exchange Limited.
      • IGX is India’s first automated national level “Gas Exchange”, which ensures transparent price discovery in natural gas and facilitates the growth of natural gas in India’s energy basket.
      • IGX was launched in 2020 under the aegis of Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).
      • Major equity holders of IGX include Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Adani Total Gas, and Torrent Gas.
  2. State Bank of India has acquired a minority stake in JSW Cement by investing Rs 100 crore in compulsorily convertible preference shares (CCPS) of the company.
      • The investment will help JSW Cement to expand capacity to 25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) from 14 MTPA presently.
      • Following this investment, Apollo Global Management and Synergy Metals Investments Holding have also made significant investments in the company.
  3. ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company has collaborated with Clove Dental, India’s largest network of oral clinics, to offer dental insurance.
      • The offering will be covered under the OPD benefit and will be available on a cashless basis to customers.
  4. Mastercard and Google Pay have partnered for tokenization to safely transact using their Mastercard credit and debit.
      • Customers can do online transactions without saving sensitive card details like the card number, CVV and expiry date.
  5. Karnataka Gramin Bank (headquartered in Bellari) has signed an MoU with Care Health Insurance Ltd to market health insurance products for customers of the bank across 22 districts of Karnataka.
      • The bank is sponsored by Canara Bank.
  6. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has partnered with Udemy Business to encourage continuous learning and skill development for its employees.
      • Through this partnership, NPCI will offer programmes to build capability in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Blockchain, Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), Advance Open Source, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Product Strategy and Relationship Management, among others.
  7. Central Government has reduced the basic customs duty on refined palm oil to 5% from 17.5% till March 2022 to boost domestic supply of palm oil and reduce the prices of palm oil in domestic retail markets.
      • The government has also decided to allow traders to import refined palm oil without a licence until December 2022.
