  1. Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to extend the validity of registration certificates for non-profit organisations (NGOs) registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act till September 30, 2021.
      • The home ministry has also announced that existing FCRA account holders have to open the FCRA account in the New Delhi Main Branch (NDMB) of the State Bank of India (SBI) in order to receive foreign funding. This can be done by NGOs by June 30 or earlier.
      • After June 30, NGOs will not be able to receive foreign funding in any other account.
  2. Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has launched ELDERLINE (14567) – toll-free helpline for elderly people – to address the problems of elders in the context of the ongoing COVID pandemic.
      • The facility is already made operational in 5 major States of UP, MP, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In Telangana, this facility has been working for more than a year.

  1. According to the latest estimates published by the WHO and International Labour Organization (ILO) in Environment International, working 55 hours or more per week is a serious health hazard.
      • Long working hours led to 745,000 deaths from stroke and ischemic heart disease in 2016, a 29% increase since 2000.
      • Between 2000 and 2016, the number of deaths from heart disease because of working long hours increased by 42% and from stroke by 19%
      • Working 55 or more hours per week is associated with an estimated 35% higher risk of a stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from ischemic heart disease, compared to working 35-40 hours a week.
      • Further, the number of people working long hours is increasing and is now 9% of the total population globally.

  1. Azim Premji University’s Centre for Sustainable Employment has released the “State of Working India 2021: One year of Covid-19” report.
      • About 100 million people lost jobs during the nationwide April-May 2020 lockdown. However, most of them were back at work by June 2020.
      • But, by the end of 2020, about 15 million workers remained out of work. Incomes also remained depressed.
      • For an average household of four members, the monthly per capita income in Oct 2020 (Rs 4,979) was still below its level in Jan 2020 (Rs 5,989).
      • In the low income base, the number of individuals who lie below the national minimum wage threshold (Rs 375 per day as recommended by the Anoop Satpathy committee) increased by 230 million during the pandemic.
      • Poverty increased by 15% in rural areas and 20% in urban area.
      • The report covered the period from March 2020 to December 2020.
      • Nearly half of formal salaried workers moved into informal work, either as self-employed (30%), casual wage (10%) or informal salaried (9%) workers, between late 2019 and late 2020.

  1. Kotak Mahindra Bank has issued the first-ever foreign portfolio investor (FPI) licence to the GIFT IFSC alternative investment fund (AIF) of True Beacon Global.
      • This is the first FPI licence issued to an AIF incorporated in GIFT IFSC by any custodian bank or designated depository participant (DDP) in the country.
