  1. In July 2022, the Central Govt had launched the “Eco Mitram” mobile app to spread awareness about the “Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar” campaign and also for the common people for voluntary registration for the beach cleaning activity on 17th September 2022.
      • Through this campaign, a mass behavioural change among the masses is intended by raising awareness about how plastic usage is destroying the marine life.
      • “Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar”, a 75-day long campaign, started in July 2022 to end on September 17 (International Coastal Clean-up Day).
      • The birth anniversary of PM Narendra Modi on September 17 was celebrated as the ‘Sewa Diwas’.
  2. A total of 76 start-ups have been onboarded under the ‘India Water Pitch-Pilot-Scale Start-Up Challenge’ by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.
      • The shortlisted start-ups will be provided financial support of up to ₹20 lakh each to work in the fields of water supply, used water management, water body rejuvenation and ground water management etc.
      • A challenge was launched by the Ministry in March 2022 to shortlist the start-ups for this initiative. The challenge was launched under AMRUT 2.0 Mission.
      • The Ministry has also launched a Toolkit for ‘Pey Jal Survekshan’ in 485 cities.
        • Pey Jal Survekshan, under the Jal Jeevan Mission, will assess cities with respect to the quality of water and the quality of water delivery to the citizens, along with sewerage, septage management, grievance redressal, water body conservation, ground water management etc.
      • Urban Waterbody Information System (UWaIS) portal was also launched with help from National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad to provide satellite images of water bodies to various cities to plan their rejuvenation.
        • 219 cities have been handed over UWaIS data of water bodies during the event.
  3. India’s longest river cruise service will begin between Varanasi and Bogibeel (Assam) in 2023.
      • The service will be covering a distance of more than 4,000 kms through Ganga, Indo- Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR), and Brahmaputra.
      • Under the plan, two floating jetties at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh district and Guijan in Tinsukia district will be constructed.

      • India has emerged as the second largest food producer in the world and its agricultural exports crossed the Rs 4 lakh crore rupees mark.

      • The number of airports will increase to 220 in the next five years.

State News

  1. Meghalaya has signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu to support Meghalaya for recruitment and training of medical professionals.
      • This is a first-of-its-kind medical partnership between the two Indian states for collaboration on knowledge sharing, capacity building and improving health service delivery.

  1. INS Ajay was an Abhay class anti-submarine warfare corvette of Western Naval Command.
      • The ship was commissioned on January 24, 1990, in the then USSR’s Poti port, Georgia.
      • It has been not decommissioned. The ship, during its service period, was part of the 23rd Patrol Vessel Squadron under the Flag Officer Commanding, Maharashtra Naval Area.

International News

  1. NASA’s Perseverance Rover has collected samples having high concentration of organic matter from the Martian surface.
      • Perseverance has been exploring the remnants of an ancient river delta inside Mars’ Jezero Crater.
      • If all goes according to plan, the samples Perseverance is collecting will be returned to Earth as early as 2033 by a joint NASA-European Space Agency (ESA) campaign.
      • Separately, NASA’s InSight Mars lander has detected the locations of craters left by meteoroids on the Martian surface based on seismic and acoustic waves.

Banking and Economy

  1. Competition Commission of India (CCI) has approved the proposed merger of Jio Cinema OTT with Viacom18 Media.
  2. RBI’s Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (an engineering training institution exclusively focused on banking technology) has launched world’s first network based on Long Range Radio (LoRa) technology.
      • Purpose – to provide banking services in remote areas without satellite network
      • LoRa is a wireless technology that enables long range communication for transmitting texts and information about financial transaction.
  3. Federal Bank has launched the pilot project for digitalizing the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) to facilitate agriculture loans in minutes in Tamil Nadu.
      • Farmers can avail loans of up to Rs 6 lakh without any collateral.
      • The turnaround time for sanctioning and crediting the loan in the borrowers’ accounts will take just five minutes.
      • The facility aims at providing small value loans to small and marginal farmers.
      • This initiative is planned by the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub.
  4. Union Bank of India has also launched the project for digitalization of Kisan Credit Card in Madhya Pradesh to make it more farmer-friendly.
      • UBI has launched this initiative under its flagship Digital Transformation project ‘Sambhav’.
      • Digitalization of Kisan Credit Card is a fintech initiative of Union Bank of India in collaboration with Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH).
  5. Yes Bank has approved the sale of its stressed assets worth around Rs 48,000 crore to the US-based asset reconstruction company (ARC) JC Flowers.
  6. RBI has removed Central Bank of India from its Prompt Corrective Action Framework (PCAF) because of its improvement in various financial ratios, including minimum regulatory capital and net non-performing assets (NNPAs).
      • The RBI had imposed the PCA norms on the bank in June 2017 due to its high net NPA and negative return of assets (RoA).
      • RBI had placed 11 state-run banks – Allahabad Bank, United Bank, Corporation Bank, IDBI Bank, Uco Bank, Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Dena Bank and Bank of Maharashtra – under PCA framework.
  7. The 3rd edition of the Global Fintech Fest 2022 has been organised in Mumbai by Fintech Convergence Council (FCC), Payment Council of India (PCI) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

  8. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed the urban co-operative banks (UCBs) with more than ₹10,000 crore deposits to put in place a Board-approved policy and a Compliance Function, including the appointment of a Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) by April 1, 2023.

      • RBI has classified the UCBs in four categories –
  • These Banks will be required need to carry out an annual Compliance risk assessment in order to identify and assess major Compliance risks faced by them and prepare a plan to manage the risks. The annual review will be carried out by the Senior Management.
  • The Compliance Policy will be reviewed at least once a year.
