  1. Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has launched the “MyNEP2020” Platform of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Web Portal which will be operational from April 1 to May 15, 2021.
      • The platform seeks to invite suggestions from the stakeholders for preparing a draft for the development of National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) and National Mission for Mentoring Program membership (NMM).
  2. Ministry of Labour and Employment has flagged off the field work of the two surveys – All India Surveys on Migrant workers and the All-India Quarterly Establishment based Employment Survey (AQEES).
      • These are two of the five All India Surveys that Labour Bureau is going to conduct this year.
      • Shortly, the remaining three surveys namely All India Surveys on Domestic workers, All India Survey on Employment generated by professionals and All India Survey on Employment generated in transport sector will also be launched by Bureau.
  3. India and Ireland held bilateral consultations on the UN Security Council issues.
      • Both countries are members of UNSC for 2021-2022.

  1. Jharkhand observed the “Health Safety Week” to break the chain of COVID-19 infection.
      • People have been advised to stay home and not to move out without necessary work.
  2. Haryana Government has launched the “Haryana Covid Emergency Loan Scheme” for new and old entrepreneurs supplying medicines, oxygen and other medical facilities to Covid-19 patients.
      • This scheme aims to ensure uninterrupted flow of vital medical supplies to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the State.
      • Budget of the scheme – Rs 500 crores
      • Under this scheme, a guarantee will be provided to entrepreneurs for additional production for six months, for which contract rates will also be fixed.
      • In addition, the interest on the loan taken by the bank will be borne by the State Government for one year.
      • The Haryana government has also approved “HARIHAR” (Homeless Abandoned and Surrendered Children Rehabilitation Initiative Haryana) policy.
      • Purpose – for providing employment, educational and financial benefits to abandoned and surrendered children (aged 18 years).
      • These children must have been abandoned before the age of 5 years or surrendered before the age of 1 year.

Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India’s export of processed food products grew by 26.51% during April-February 2020-21 to Rs 43,798 crore.
      • Value added products such as processed vegetables and alcoholic beverages have witnessed a growth of more than 40% in April-February 2020-21.
      • There is an increase in demand of pulses, processed fruits and vegetables, and cereals preparations in markets like the Middle East, Far East, US and UK.
  2. Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has released the second advance estimates of production of principal crops for year 2020-21.
      • This time, it is a record Food grain production of 303.34 million tonnes. It is higher by 24.47 million tonnes than the average production of last 5 years.
      • The cumulative rainfall during this year’s southwest monsoon season up to 30th September, 2020 has been 9% higher than Long Period Average (LPA).

  1. Ashok Leyland (a part of the Hinduja Group) has delivered the first batch of its light bulletproof vehicles to the Indian Air Force.
      • Ashok Leyland is the largest supplier of logistics vehicles to the Indian Army.
      • These vehicles have been developed under Transfer of Technology model from Lockheed Martin to Ashok Leyland and are completely indigenised and developed in this country.
  2. Indian Army is launching a major skiing expedition from the crucial Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand.
      • This skiing expedition is called ‘ARMEX-21’.

International News

  1. Boao Forum for Asia’s 20th Annual Conference 2021 was held in Boao, South China’s Hainan Province.
      • Theme – ‘A World in Change: Join Hands to Strengthen Global Governance and Advance Belt and Road Cooperation’.
      • An annual report on BFA was also released.
      • The Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) is an international not for profit organization which was jointly initiated by 26 member states in 2001, the members have now increased to 29. India is also a member of the BFA.
      • The BFA is modelled on the lines of the World Economic Forum’s Davos Summit. Thus, it is also called the ‘Davos of the East’.
      • Its five focal areas include technology innovation, health, education, culture and media in response to the new economy.
  2. Russian space agency Roscosmos has announced to launch its own space station in 2025 as Moscow is considering withdrawing from the International Space Station programme.
      • The current ISS was launched in 1998 by Russia, the US, Japan, Canada and the European Space Agency.
  3. UNESCO has chosen Tbilisi (in Georgia) as its World Book Capital for the 2021 (on the occasion of World Book and Copyrights Day).
      • Guadalajara (in Mexico) has been named as the 2022 World Book Capital by UNESCO.
      • New Delhi also became the World Book Capital for 2003.

  1. According to a report by People’s Bank of China, India would surpass China’s demographic advantage by 2035.
      • China’s demographic disadvantage is due to the strict birth policies, leading to ageing population and a declining of work force.
      • In order to compete with India and US (which have relatively younger population), China needs to liberalise its population.
      • By 2050, India will have a larger young population with larger workforce and greater growth potential.

  1. New Development Bank (NDB) has fixed the price of its 5-year USD 1.5 billion benchmark bond.
      • The net proceeds of the Bond will be used for financing sustainable development activities as well as COVID-19 Emergency Program Loans to the Bank’s member countries.
      • The NDB established the Emergency Assistance Facility in April 2020, to provide up to USD 10 billion to tackle Covid-19 pandemic, including USD 5 billion for financing healthcare and social safety-related expenditures, as well as USD 5 billion for supporting economic recovery efforts.

  2. HSBC India has collaborated with Google Pay and VISA to enable secured tokenisation on its credit cards.
      • This new feature will enable HSBC Credit Card customers to link their card to GPay and use it as a payment option at merchant stores.
  3. Mastercard and BOB Financial Solutions Limited (BFSL) have partnered to launch ConQR – a Mastercard QR on Card solution – a payment solution for cardholders.
      • This solution uses a Mastercard technology which enables cardholders/ SMEs to accept cashless payments using their cards.
      • The QR on Card makes payments more flexible and empowers cardholders (mainly small merchants) to spend and earn on the same card.
      • The ConQR Credit Card will have a Bharat QR Code on the card face.
  4. Indian Bank has signed an MOU with The Chennai Angles (angel investment group) to finance startups under the IND Spring Board – loan initiative of the bank.
      • Purpose – to empower startups to realise their research efforts backed by financial support from the bank.
      • Under this scheme, the public sector bank will extend credit facilities of up to Rs 50 crores for working capital requirements and for acquiring fixed assets.
