  1. Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) have collaborated to create a platform to support the development of new electric vehicle (EV) batteries to suit Indian requirements.
      • A white paper will be prepared on a roadmap for the development of new battery technologies in India. This would be followed by the creation of an expert-industry forum or platform to support this process.
  2. Central government has completed the construction of more than 25,000 Amrit Sarovars within the 6 months.
      • Under Mission Amrit Sarovar, a target has been set to build 50,000 Amrit Sarovars by 15th August 2023.
      • Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched on National Panchayati Raj Day on 24th April 2022 to construct and/or rejuvenate at least 75 ponds in every district of India, totalling about 50,000 Amrit Sarovar.
      • Ministry of Rural Development is implementing this mission in collaboration with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Culture, Panchayati Raj, Environment, and Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N).
      • According to the Ministry of Rural Development, as of November 17, 2022, about 90,531 sites have been identified for the construction of Amrit Sarovars, out of which work has been started on 52,245 sites.

  1. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched AMLAN- Anaemia Mukta Lakhya Abhiyan in the state an approach to reduce anaemia among targeted groups.
      • The programme will benefit about 1.37 crore people, which includes pregnant women, lactating mothers, women of reproductive age group, adolescents and children.
      • It will focus on strengthening iron and folic acid supplementation, testing for haemoglobin, treatment of anaemic cases, capacity building of service providers and social behaviour change communication.
      • The campaign aims for achieving Anaemia Mukta Odisha.

Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. Sahyadri Farmer Producer Company (FPC) becomes the first company in India to bag the license for setting up a private agricultural mandi at Dindori, in Nashik district.
      • The market will come up over the next three months at a cost of Rs 25 crore.
      • The private agri-mandi will have a 100-acre dedicated market space integrated with world-class infrastructure, services from banking to storage, processing, and packaging under one roof, options for offline and online trading, legalisation of field trade, and ownership of farmers.
  2. India’s Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) approved the evaluation, in open fields, of genetically modified (GM) mustard — a key step on the path to commercial-scale cultivation.
      • At present, there are only two genetically-modified crops which are commercially allowed. First is BT Cotton (a commercial crop) and the second is Dhara Mustard Hybrid-11 (DMH 11), (a food crop), which is under consideration now.
      • The scientific name of Mustard is Brassica juncea.
      • GM Mustard will focus on increasing its herbicide tolerance and preventing self-pollination. It contains three genes from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, a soil bacterium.
      • Recently, the FSSAI has also released a new draft of Genetically Modified (GM) Food regulations for public consultation to regulate genetically modified crops in India.

• Benefits of GM Food Crops -
o Low input costs (lower need for pesticides and herbicides) and higher yield would encourage farmers to opt for GM crops.
o Doubling of Farmers’ income – The GM crops can help in doubling farmers’ income as the input cost has been reduced.
o Crop Hybridization – Presently, only MSP-attracting traditional crops like wheat and rice are grown in abundance across the nation.
o Soil Fertility – It helps in improving soil fertility because different crops are grown on land now.
o Self-Reliance – Right now, the majority of food oils are imported to meet consumption needs. This step would help in commercialising food oil crops.
o Food Security – Lesser dependence on imports and higher production on the home soil would strengthen food security, especially in the face of climate change.
o Inflation – higher imports lead to an increase in the prices of goods. In case of domestic production, this inflation can be beaten.

  1. The 3rd Global High-level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was organized in Muscat, Oman.
      • Muscat Ministerial Manifesto on Anti-Microbial Resistance has been adopted at the conference. The manifesto highlighted –
        • Reducing the total amount of antimicrobials used in agrifood systems by at least 30 per cent-50% by 2030.
        • Ensuring that ‘Access’ group antibiotics (a category of antibiotics that are affordable, safe and have a low AMR risk) represent at least 60% of overall antibiotic consumption in humans by 2030.
      • The deliberations at Muscat are set to pave the way for bold and specific political commitments which will be highlighted at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR in 2024.
  2. India has decided to send a utility helicopter unit to the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
      • Bangladesh and Pakistan will each send an armed helicopter unit to this operation.
      • The Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) is a United Nations Peacekeeping Mission that was set up in 2013 by the UNSC to stabilize the western African country after the 2012 Tuareg rebellion.

      • Globally, patent filing has seen a growth of 3.6% in 2021 over 2020.
      • Trademarks grew by 5.5%, Industrial Designs grew by 9.2%, and Plant Variety rights’ filing grew by 12% in 2021 over 2020.
      • Approximately 67.6% of all applications were from Asia. India, China, and the Republic of Korea have experienced rapid increases in the local patent filing.

      • The card aims to facilitate transactions by simply tapping the sticker on a Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled point-of-sale terminal.

      • The announcement is in relation to the Liquidity Risk Management Framework.
  1. FTX – one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges – founded by Sam Bankman-Fried has collapsed.
      • Importance – It highlights the need for the govt in the regulation of finances and currency. Without a central body of regulation, the decentralised currency does not have the potential to cater to investors’ faith.
      • Reasons for collapse –
        • Short-term – FTT’s major shareholder, the rival exchange Binance, to declare that it was selling its holdings.
        • Medium-term – FTX and Alameda’s links. Alameda is a hedge fund of FTX. It has given risky loans.
          • The FTT did not have the facility to accept wire transfers. Therefore, the customers are required to send money to Alameda and the FTX would credit their accounts.
          • However, Alameda never transferred the amount to FTT, leading to a substantial loss to customers.
        • Long-term – The mismanagement of the organization.
