  1. Indian Railways has developed a first-of-its-kind ‘form-based codes’ for the commercial development of railway land.
      • The form-based codes approach is a set of a comprehensive set of codes, norms, and guidelines prepared by the nodal organisation to plan station redevelopment and regulating commercial development of railway land.
  2. National Investigation Agency (NIA) has organized a webinar on Misuse of Internet by Terrorists for BRICS nations.

  3. India and US have launched a new high-level “US-India Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership” to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
      • The partnership will proceed along two main tracks —
          • Strategic Clean Energy Partnership, co-chaired by Secretary of Energy Granholm, and
          • Climate Action and Finance Mobilisation Dialogue, co-chaired by Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.
      • India will achieve 450 GW of renewable power under this partnership with the US.
  4. Ministry of Electronics & IT has launched #FOSS4GOV Innovation Challenge to accelerate adoption of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) In Government.
      • This challenge has been launched in collaboration with Omidyar Network India.
  5. Central govt has announced to extend the benefit of PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for May and June 2021.
      • National Food Security Act, 2013 beneficiaries covered under both categories of NFSA, namely Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Householders (PHH), will be provided with an additional quota of free-of-cost food grains (Rice/Wheat) at a scale of 5 Kg per person per month, over and above their regular monthly entitlements under NFSA.

  1. Chandigarh has released first-of-its-kind draft cycling policy.
      • It is for the first time that a city has drafted a cycling policy in India. The policy has been drafted by the Chandigarh Smart City Limited.

Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare has announced to bring 9 million tonnes of land under mustard cultivation to increase mustard production to 17 million tonnes by 2025-26.
      • It was announced at the ‘Mission Mustard 2025’ webinar, organised by Solvent Extractors’ Association (SEA).
      • The average normal area for five years from 2014-15 to 2018-19 was 5.9 million hectares and the production was around 7.7 mt.
      • For 2021-22, the government is targeting an area of 7.58 million hectares with a production of 12.24 mt.
      • The Government has targeted 368 districts in 13 States for mustard cultivation.

International News

  1. 5th Global Forum on TB Vaccine was convened by Stop TB Partnership Working Group on New Vaccines, in addition to International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, and Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative virtually.
      • Focus of 2021 forum – Advancing TB vaccines in the time of COVID-19
      • This is the world’s largest gathering of stakeholders to develop and deploy new vaccines to prevent Tuberculosis.
      • The forum was addressed by the Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
      • The 6th Global Forum on TB Vaccine will be held in Toulouse, France in February 2022.
      • India aims to eradicate TB in India by 2025 and the global target of eradicating TB is 2030.
  2. Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, will represent Delhi and India at the World Cities Culture Forum 2021 (WCCF) – dates are yet to be announced.
      • Theme of the Forum – ‘The Future of Culture’
      • The forum comprises 40 world cities.
      • This Forum will be hosted by UK.
  3. The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to make Washington DC, the 51st US state.
      • The Senate also passed a bill to combat the rise of hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
  4. Japan will host its first ever military exercise with US and France in the country’s southwest next month.

  5. NASA has launched the Spatial Heterodyne Interferometric Emission Line Dynamics Spectrometer (SHIELDS) mission from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
      • The mission will study light from interstellar particles in the heliosphere.
      • The entire field (marked with blue line in the picture below) will be studied by SHIELD mission.

  1. The Times Higher Education (THE) has released its Impact Rankings 2021.
      • It is the only ranking in the world that assesses universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
      • The 2021 Impact Rankings is the third edition and the overall ranking includes 1,115 universities from 94 countries/regions.
      • Individual ranking on each SDG has also been given. Below mentioned are the overall rankings.
      • Universities are assessed across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.
      • Top – University of Manchester (UK), followed by University of Sydney (Australia), RMIT University (Australia).
      • India’s universities – Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Tamil Nadu) is the only Indian university in Top 100. Its ranking is 81st.
          • JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (Karnataka) and Lovely Professional University (Punjab) are the next best at 101-200 rank.

  2. FirstRand Bank (South Africa’s second largest bank) is the latest foreign bank to completely exit India after closing its only branch in Mumbai.
      • The South African lender started operations as late as 2009 and started lending to individual customers and small and medium enterprises only in 2012.
      • However, it could not gain popularity in India.
  3. Kerala’s first neo-bank named as Ace Money Neobank has been opened by Aceware FinTech Services, in partnership with Yes Bank and ICICI Bank.
      • Chqbook.com is India’s first neobank for small business owners.
      • FamPay is India’s first neobank for teenagers.
      • Finin is India’s first full-fledged consumer neobank.
  4. Indian Overseas Bank has appointed Ernst & Young as digital consultant to achieve the goal of increasing the share of digital services.

  5. Tata Steel, along with HSBC, has executed world’s first blockchain-enabled paperless trade transaction in the steel industry.
      • This transaction involved the export of steel by Tata Steel to Universal Tube & Plastic Industries, UAE.
      • The transaction was executed over the Contour platform and essDOCS platforms.
      • The letter of credit was issued by HSBC UAE for Univ¬ersal Tube & Plastic Industries, UAE (importer), with HSBC India as the advising and negotiating bank for Tata Steel, India (exporter).
  6. DCB Bank Ltd (a private sector lender) has acquired a 9% stake in Bengaluru-based non-bank financier Techfino Capital Pvt Ltd.

  7. Central government will sell up to 10% stake in Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) through an offer for sale in the current fiscal to gather about ₹400 crore.
      • The govt holds 75% stake in RCF.
  8. International Financial Services Centre Authority (IFSCA) has allowed NBFCs, both local and global, to start operations in Gujarat’s GIFT City.
      • NBFCs will be allowed to offer the whole range of services — loans, exotic derivative trades, investment banking, and third-party product sales.
      • A Finance Company can be set up either as a subsidiary or a joint venture, or as a newly-incorporated company under the Companies Act, 2013.
      • Seven core activities are permitted – lending in the form of loans, commitments and guarantees, securitisation, and sale or purchase of portfolios, undertaking investments, including subscribing, acquiring, holding, or transferring securities or such other instruments.
      • Equipment leasing is also allowed with Finance Companies that can run global or regional corporate treasury operations. Also, Asset Management support services can also be undertaken.
      • Under non-core activities, FCs can run portfolio management services, merchant banking services, investment advisories, and trusteeship services. They can sell units of mutual funds and insurance products via the same platform.

GDP Forecasts

  1. Care Ratings has forecasted 10.2% GDP growth rate for FY22 (2021-22) for India.

  2. S&P Global Ratings has forecasted a 11% GDP growth rate for the Indian economy for 2021-22.
      • S&P forecasted a ‘BBB-‘ rating on India with a stable outlook.
      • India’s GDP growth rate would be 6.1% to 6.4% for the next couple of years.
  3. State Bank of India (SBI) has forecasted a 10.4% GDP growth rate for India for FY22.

  4. Fitch Ratings has forecasted a 12.8% in 2021-22 and 5.8% in FY23 for India.
      • FY21 contraction – (-) 7.5%
      • Fitch has affirmed India’s long-term foreign-currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at ‘BBB-’ with a negative outlook.

  1. India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) GC Murmu has been chosen as the external auditor of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for a 3 year term.
      • OPCW is the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, which entered into force on 29 April 1997.
      • The OPCW, with its 193 Member States, aims to eliminate chemical weapons.
