  1. Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has announced to set up One-Stop Centres (OSC) — Sakhi – for supporting women affected by violence in public and private spaces in foreign countries.
      • The mission will be launched in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs.
      • The first 10 OSCs will be introduced in Australia, Canada, Singapore, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
      • The scheme was launched in 2015. The scheme is funded under the Nirbhaya Fund.

  1. India’s first city-wide environmental surveillance platform for COVID named ‘Precision Health Platform’ has been launched in Bengaluru.
      • It is a sewage surveillance system that will help in detecting Covid virus in sewage. This will help in preparing better.
      • The Precision Health Platform in Bengaluru, the first of its kind in Asia, will test sewage from both sewered and non-sewered waste-water to identify clusters of new infections.
      • United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Skoll Foundation-supported COVID action Collab (CAC) partnered with Karnataka govt for this initiative.

International News

  1. NASA is planning to send its first mobile robot named Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) to the moon by late 2023.
      • The robot named is part of the Artemis program. The Artemis program aims to land the first woman and first person of colour on the Moon.
      • The robot will map and explore the moon’s resources on and under the lunar surface, particularly water-ice.
      • This will help them in providing a sustained human presence on the moon.
      • According to NASA, astronauts will follow in VIPER’s wheel prints and land at the lunar South Pole.
      • VIPER will have four instruments.
          • It includes the Regolith and Ice Drill for Exploring New Terrains (TRIDENT) hammer drill,
          • the Mass Spectrometer Observing Lunar Operations (MSolo) instrument,
          • the Near-Infrared Volatiles Spectrometer System (NIRVSS) and,
          • the Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS).

  1. Dr D Nageshwar Reddy (Indian gastroenterologist) has become the first-ever Indian medical practitioner to receive the Rudolf V. Schindler Award from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) for his work in the field of endoscopy.
      • Dr Reddy is the Padma Bhushan awardee and Chairman of AIG Hospitals.
      • Rudolf V. Schindler Award is the highest honour from ASGE.
      • Meaning of Endoscopy – Endoscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to view the inside of a person’s body. Doctors use it to diagnose diseases in the following parts of the body: oesophagus, stomach. colon.
      • Additional info – Dr. Reddy has also received B C Roy Award, Master Endoscopist Award from ASGE, ASGE International Leadership Award in 2011 and Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Grand Master.
  2. Bharat Ratna Professor C.N.R. Rao has received the 13th International Eni Award 2020, also called the Energy Frontier award, for research into renewable energy sources and energy storage.
      • This is considered as the Nobel Prize in Energy Research.
      • Eni Award is a prize awarded by the Italian oil and gas company Eni.
