  1. Central Govt has appointed two separate Groups of Experts / Sub-Committees under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
      • Purpose – the committees will suggest suitable working models to reduce the cost of insurance premium and technology in crop yield estimation.
      • This follows the exit of several States including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and West Bengal from the scheme, citing high premium.
      • 1st committee – Headed by ISRO scientist KR Manjunath, to investigate the feasibility of adopting various technology-based approaches for conducting crop yield estimation
        • For this, technologies developed by ISRO, National Remote Sensing Centre (of ISRO), and Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (of M/o Agriculture) will be used.
        • The govt is planning to use drones and satellite-based images for the purpose of inspection.
      • 2nd committee – Headed by Saurabh Mishra (joint secretary in the Ministry of Finance), to suggest models for reducing the premium cost.
        • The committee was also tasked with developing financial projections for the next five years, with corresponding assumptions in each model.
  2. Central Govt has formed a High-Level Committee of 5-members to examine the possibility of the withdrawal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from Nagaland.
      • The committee is headed by secretary-level officer Vivek Joshi.
      • The AFSPA has been operational in Nagaland for decades.
  3. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kesari has reached the Port of Maputo, Mozambique to deliver 500 tonnes of food aid under Mission Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
      • INS Kesari undertook similar missions between May and June 2020 to provide humanitarian and medical assistance to Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros.
      • Under the Sagar Mission, the Indian Navy has delivered assistance of more than 3,000 metric tons of food aid, over 300 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen, 900 oxygen concentrators and 20 ISO containers to 15 friendly foreign countries over 215 days at sea.

  1. India is going to develop Trincomalee Oil Tank farm in Sri Lanka by forming a joint venture.
      • Indian Oil Subsidiary Lanka IOC would be given 49% stake and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation of Sri Lanka will keep 51%.
      • This arrangement is for the next 50 years.
      • The JV will refurbish the 61 of the 99 tanks at the Trincomalee Oil Tank farm.
      • The pre-WWII era oil storage facility has a capacity of nearly 1 million tonnes, which far more than the demand in Sri Lanka.

  1. HOP Electric (EV maker) has signed an initial pact with the Rajasthan government to set up an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Jaipur with a capacity to produce 1.8 lakh vehicles per annum.

      • The restrictions have been classified under Yellow, Amber, Orange and Red alerts, based on low to high risk level.

      • Implementing agency – Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL)
      • Scheme – The project is a part of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), a scheme for irrigation and efficient use of water.
      • Beneficiary states – Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh
      • The surveys related to the Renukaji dam began in 1976, but procedural hurdles were created at every step. So, in 2021, the project’s foundation was laid.
  5. Telangana has been ranked first in the implementation of the Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM).
      • Tamil Nadu and Gujarat took the second and third positions respectively.

      The Mission was launched in 2016 to stimulate local economic development, enhance basic services and create well planned Rurban clusters.

      • The scheme aims to attract investments in rural India and bridge the rural – urban divide.
      • Under the scheme, 300 rurban clusters will be developed in the 5 years.

      • BrahMos is a collaboration between Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

      • Global coal demand is set to rise to 8,025 Mt in 2022, the highest level ever seen, and to remain there through 2024.
      • In 2021, the global coal demand is expected to rise by 6%, with coal consumption reaching up to 7,906 MT.
      • Power generation through coal is expected to rise 9% in 2021 to 10,350 terawatt-hours.
      • CO2 emission from coal in 2024 are expected to be well over 3 giga tonnes than what is required for net-zero by 2050. Thus, the world is not on the way to achieve net-zero by 2050.

      • India is set to witness a growth rate of 12% in coal-based power generation.
      • In India, coal demand is also expected to increase 4% per year.
      • China and India account for two-thirds of global coal consumption, despite their efforts to increase renewables and other low-carbon energy sources.
      • India’s growing appetite for coal is set to add 130 million tonnes (Mt) to coal demand between 2021 and 2024.

      • This is fourth such arrangement for PNB.
  2. SIDBI has signed an MoU with the West Bengal government to develop the MSME ecosystem in the state.
      • A project management unit (PMU) of SIDBI will work with the state government.
      • The key functions of the PMU will be to study the existing framework and guide stakeholders for cluster, sector specific products, interventions for MSMEs and handholding them for onboarding on digit platforms for funding, marketing and listing, besides evaluating scope of infrastructure projects for MSME clusters among others.
