  1. Indian Science Technology and Engineering facilities Map (I-STEM), the national web portal for sharing R&D facilities was formally launched in January 2020.
      • It has entered its second phase with added features.
Launch • I-STEM (www.istem.gov.in) is an initiative of Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Govt. of India under the aegis of Prime Minister Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) mission.
• I-STEM project has been extended for five years, until 2026.
• The current PSA is K VijayRaghavan.
About I stem
Purpose • I-STEM aims to strengthen the R&D ecosystem of the country by connecting researchers with resources, in part
◦ by promoting technologies and scientific equipment development indigenously, and
◦ by providing necessary supplies and supports to researchers by enabling them an access to existing publicly funded R&D facilities in the country through the I-STEM web portal.
Why I Stem?
Function • I-STEM portal facilitates researchers to access slots for the use of equipment, as well as to share the details of the outcomes, such as, patents, publications and technologies.
• It hosts and provides access to selected R&D software required to undertake research projects by students and scientists.
Benefits Of I STEM
Phase I • In the first phase, the portal is listed with more than 20,000 pieces of equipment from 1050 institutions across the country and has more than 20,000 Indian researchers.
Phase II • Under Phase II, the portal will host indigenous technology products listed through a digital catalogue.
• The portal will also provide a platform for the various City Knowledge and Innovation Clusters (https://www.psa.gov.in/st-clusters) supported by the Office of PSA for effective use of R&D infrastructure.
• In this new phase, the I-STEM portal will be designed as a dynamic digital platform that will provide boost to research and innovation especially for 2 tier and 3 tier cities and also for the emerging start-up ecosystem.
  1. Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid has visited India.
      • It is his first visit to India after being appointed as the President-elect of 76th UN General Assembly.
      • He released the vision document of “Presidency of Hope: Covid Pandemic and Need for Reformed Multilateralism”.
      • India and Maldives signed agreement for community development projects in Maldives. India is developing $2 billion worth of infrastructural and development projects in Maldives.
  2. The Central Government is implementing Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Padhati (BPKP) as a sub scheme of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) since 2020-21 for the promotion of traditional indigenous practices.
      • The scheme aims to remove all synthetic chemical inputs and promotes on-farm biomass recycling with major stress on biomass mulching; use of cow dung-urine formulations; plant-based preparations and time to time working of soil for aeration.
      • Under BPKP, financial assistance of Rs 12200/ha for 3 years is provided for cluster formation, capacity building and continuous handholding by trained personnel, certification and residue analysis.
      • As of now, an area of 4.9 lakh ha is covered in 8 states and Rs. 4980.99 lakh has been released.
  3. Union Government has decided to set up a National Centre of Excellence for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics for creating a pool of skilled workforce in this segment.
      • It will be set up in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
      • Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and Film and Television Institute of India run courses on Animation and VFX in order to create skilled manpower in these segments.
      • National Film Development Corporation organizes Film Bazaar at the International Film Festival of India, Goa every year for attracting foreign investment in the film industry.
      • India has also audio-visual co-production treaties with 15 countries.
      • All the above-mentioned information was presented by Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur to Rajya Sabha.

      • The e-Waste (Management) Rules were notified in 2016.
      • E-Waste generation has risen since 2017-18 (the year of beginning of e-waste data collection in India).
  5. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), has planted 1,000 bamboo saplings at Tanot village in Jaisalmer under Project BOLD.
      • Earlier this month, the project was launched and the first saplings were planted in NichlaMandwa village of Udaipur.
  6. Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has awarded 11 cities which participated in the India Cycles4Change Challenge as “India’s Top 11 Cycling Pioneers”.
      • Total 107 cities participated in the first stage of this challenge.
      • These 11 cities will receive an award of Rs 1 crore each to scale up their cycling initiatives.
      • The second stage of the Challenge will begin in August, 2021, wherein fresh applications will be invited from all Smart Cities, capital cities of States/UTs and all cities that have an established Municipal Corporation.

About India Cycles4Change Challenge:
⚬ The India Cycles4Change Challenge was launched in June 2020 to inspire cities to adopt cycling-friendly interventions in the city’s transit systems.
⚬ The challenge was launched under the Smart Cities Mission.
⚬ The Challenge would encourage the cities to create extensive cycling-networks using low-cost methods like pop-up cycle lanes, non-motorised zones and set up community-led cycle rental schemes.
⚬ In the longer term, the Smart Cities Mission will encourage cities to convert temporary interventions into permanent.
⚬ The Challenge has two stages.
❑ In the first stage, cities had to develop interventions to promote cycling and developing a scale-up strategy.
❑ In the second stage, cities will get guidance from national and international experts to further scale-up the initiatives.
⚬ India Programme of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) will be the knowledge partner of the Smart Cities Mission to assist the Challenge. ITDP is a US-based organization.

State News

  1. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has launched ‘Sujal’ or drink-from-tap mission in Puri to provide 24X7 drink-from-tap facility in the city.
      • Thus, Puri has become the first city in India to have such a project for 24X7 drinking water.
      • Puri has now joined the elite group of international cities like London, New York and Singapore in supplying quality potable water from municipal taps throughout the day.
      • From now on, all the families living in Puri Dham of Mahaprabhu will have access to clean drinking water from tap 24 hours. Under the Sujal scheme, one can drink water directly from the tap. Storage or filter is not required.
  2. Uttar Pradesh has signed an MoU with Sapio Analytics (government advisory firm) to provide licenses of automation software Accloud, to 20,000 MSMEs of the state.
      • The software licenses shall be provided free of cost to the MSMEs who can apply for the same (https://sapioanalytics.com/accloud/) through a portal.
      • Accloud can be operated on both mobile and web, and is available in multiple languages including Hindi, for the business people of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
      • The Accloud will help the businesses automate their accounting, sales, and inventory management process, with the GST compliance becoming very easy.

  1. On the occasion of the 325th Navy Day celebrations of the Russian Navy, INS Tabar participated in the parade held at St Petersburg in Russia.
      • Post Navy Day celebrations, Tabar will participate in Exercise INDRA scheduled to be held on July 28-29 in the Baltic sea with two Russian Navy ships.
      • Indian Air Force (IAF) Sarang helicopter Display team and IAF aerobatic team Sarang (Peacock) performed at the MAKS-2021 International Air Show in Moscow.
      • The MAKS-2021 (world’s largest aviation forums) was held from July 20 to 25 at the Gromov Flight Research Institute’s airfield in Zhukovsky, near Moscow.

  1. Paseo del Prado boulevard and the adjoining Retiro park in Madrid, Spain have been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
      • International Council on Monuments and Sites – a non-governmental international organisation dedicated to the conservation of the world’s monuments and sites – is headquartered in Paris, France.
  2. Malaysia has registered the world’s first affordable and effective new drug for hepatitis C.
      • The drug, ravidasvir, was approved for use with an existing drug, sofosbuvir.
      • Malaysian government partnered with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), a collaborative, non-profit drug research organisation, to develop the drug.
      • Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is spread through contact with blood from an infected person.
      • According to WHO, some 71 million people around the world are living with Hepatitis C.
