  1. US and India have launched the joint US-India Taskforce on Hydrogen and US-India Taskforce on Biofuels under the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP).
      • US has enhanced its Nationally Determined Contribution to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions by 50-52% below 2005 levels in 2030.
      • US invited India to participate in the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), which will be launched at COP26 of UNFCCC in November.
        • AIM for Climate will increase and accelerate global innovation on agriculture and food systems in support of climate action.
      • US and India are about to conclude their contract for building six Westinghouse Electric Company AP-1000 nuclear reactors in Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh.

      • IPRS was launched in 2018 on a pilot basis, with the support of Asian Development Bank.
      • The IPRS 2.0 aims to widen the scope of the rating system to cover more industrial parks and Special Economic Zones (SEZ).

About Industrial Information System:

    • India aims to achieve the target of 25% share of manufacturing in gross domestic product (GDP) by 2022.
    • In this context, the DPIIT developed the GIS-enabled Industrial Information System (IIS) with participation of states, union territories, central departments, and ministries.
    • The objective of the IIS is to consolidate information about the industrial landscape of India and make it available in a transparent way.
    • The IIS was launched in 2017. The IIS has been integrated with the Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS) to help investors in decision making.
      • Investors will be able to compare the industrial parks based on their performance in the IPRS.
      • All the information related to industries in India (particularly industrial parks) are seamlessly provided on the IIS platform.
    • The IIS will also be integrated the India Industrial Land Bank (IILB) portal of India, which provides information related to land availability and its conditions.
Industrial Information System
  1. The Central government has extended the tenure of the Company Law Committee, chaired by Corporate Affairs Secretary Rajesh Verma, by one year.
      • The Committee was constituted in 2019. Last year, the ministry had extended the panel’s tenure till September 17, 2021.
      • The committee has the mandate for examining and making recommendations to the government on various issues related to implementation of the Companies Act and the Limited Liability Partnership Act.
  2. The Chairperson of the Committee for Reforms in Criminal Laws is the Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi (incumbent: Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao).
      • The Committee was formed in 2020 to bring reforms in the Indian Criminal Laws.
      • The Chancellor of the NLU, Delhi is the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court (incumbent: Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel).
  3. 7th consecutive edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS) 2022 has been launched by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
      • It will be conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U).
      • Theme of SS 2022 – ‘People First’
      • Focus – ‘Jan Bhagidari’ (citizen participation); well-being of frontline sanitation workers.
      • Events to be organized under SS 2022 – ‘Kachra Alag Karo’ campaigns, ‘Waste to Wealth’ exhibitions, ‘Sarvajanik Shauchalay Safai Jan Bhagidari Utsav’ (means commercial toilet cleaning event with citizen participation).
      • New population categories – under 15K and between 15-25K to ensure participation of smaller cities
      • District rankings – For the first time, district rankings have been introduced in SS 2022.
      • Scope of SS 2022 – Expanded to cover 100% wards for sampling, as compared to 40% in previous years.
      • Coffee Table Book – Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs released a coffee table book titled ‘A Change of Heart’.
      • Mobile App – The revamped version of Swachhata App, the digital sanitation grievance redressal platform introduced in 2016 by MoHUA, was launched.
  4. Mid-day meal scheme has been renamed as “PM-Poshan Shakti Nirman” scheme.
      • Now, around 24 lakh students receiving pre-primary education at government and government-aided schools will also be brought under the ambit of the scheme from next year.
      • Under the mid-day meal scheme, hot cooked food is provided currently to students from Classes 1 to 8.
      • PM POSHAN has been launched for an initial period of five years (2021-22 to 2025-26).
      • The Centre will bear Rs 54,061 crore of the total estimated cost of Rs 1.3 lakh crore, with the states paying Rs 31,733 crore (Rs 45,000 crore will be released by the Centre as subsidies for food grains).
  5. ICMR has released “Clinicopathological Profile of Cancers in India: A Report of Hospital Based Cancer Registries, 2021” report.
      • The report was prepared by ICMR- National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research, Bengaluru.
      • A total of 6.10 lakh cancer cases have been reported in India between 2012 to 2019.
      • Of these, 52.4% cases were reported among males while 47.6% cases were reported among females.
      • Of the total cases, 7.9% cancer cases were found among children among 0-14 years.
      • These cases were reported under the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP), which was launched in 1981 by ICMR.
      • Types of cancer –
        • 31.2% males suffered from cancers of the head and neck region.
        • 51% females suffered from gynaecologic cancers (particularly breast cancer)
  6. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has extended the existing foreign trade policy (FTP) till March 31, 2022.
      • The government had earlier extended the FTP 2015-20 until September 30 this year due to the Covid-19 crisis.
      • The Foreign Trade Policy provides guidelines for enhancing exports to push economic growth and create jobs.
  7. Ministry of chemical and fertilizers has notified the scheme for promotion of medical device parks.
      • Launch year – 2020

        • 70:30 – Centre: States

      • Objectives of the scheme –
        • Easy access to standard testing and infrastructure facilities
        • To reduce cost of production of medical devices leading to better availability and affordability of medical devices
      • Number of medical devices parks – Four medical device parks will be set up under the scheme to provide the common infrastructure facility (CIF).
      • States – Based on the evaluation of various states’ proposals, the state government of Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh have been given approval under the scheme.
  8. Ministry of Food Processing Industry, along with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has launched Seed Capital Module under PMFME scheme on DAY-NULM MIS portal.
      • Purpose – To provide seed capital assistance to the members of urban SHGs working in the food processing sector.
      • Each member of SHG can avail Rs.40,000 seed capital assistance under PMFME.

  1. Uttarakhand’s first Palmetum and the biggest one in North India has been inaugurated at Haldwani in Nainital district.
      • ThePalmetum has over 110 species of palms.
      • The Palmetum has been developed under the state’s CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority, Uttarakhand).

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. India and Oman have signed an MoU for exchange of white shipping information and to boost maritime security cooperation.
      • The signing of the MoU between Royal Navy of Oman and Indian Navy would facilitate information exchange on merchant shipping traffic.
      • Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Centre-Gurugram and the Maritime Security Centre, Oman will exchange information and contribute to enhanced maritime safety and security in the region.
      • Both navies have been conducting the Naseem Al Bahr maritime exercise since 1993. The last edition of this exercise was held in Goa.

International News

  1. The Summit for Information and Democracy was organized alongside of the UNGA at the Consulate General of France, in New York.
      • Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shri Anurag Thakur participated in a round table discussion at the Summit.
      • International Partnership on Information & Democracy was launched in 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to promote and implement democratic principles in the global information and communication space.
      • It is an intergovernmental non-binding agreement that has been endorsed by 43 countries around the world.
      • Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate Economist) represents India at the Commission on Information & Democracy.
  2. Quad Leaders’ Summit 2021 was hosted by USA in Washington DC.
Highlights:
A) Japan Railway Track Consultant Co., along with National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd, is building India’s 1st bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
B) Quad Fellowship Program:
• Quad leaders announced a fellowship program that allows 25 students from each Quad country to pursue higher education in STEM from American Universities.
• Every year, 100 students will be selected for this fellowship.
• Sponsors of this program are Accenture, Blackstone, Boeing, Google, Mastercard, and Western Digital.
• The program is pioneered by Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic organizaiton.
C) Quad Vaccine Experts Group:
• The Group comprised of top experts from Quad governments, charged with building strong ties and better aligning our plans to support Indo-Pacific health security and COVID-19 response.
• Japan will continue to help regional partners purchase vaccines through $3.3 billion of COVID-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan.
• Quad countries will also conduct a joint pandemic-preparedness tabletop or exercise in 2022.
D) Quad infrastructure partnership:
• The partnership aims to provide technical assistance to member countries to promote sustainable infrastructure development.
All Quad Countries Agree to Support the Blue Dot Network:
• The Blue Dot Network was launched by US, Japan, and Australia.
• Purpose – to certify infrastructure project based on their economic and social sustainability, environment-friendly practices, and transparency.
• The Blue Dot certified infrastructure project assures the investors of its quality and local stakeholders about its environment sustainability.
• Thus, it enhances investor confidence and helps in attracting private funds for the projects.
• The Global Infrastructure Hub estimates there will be a $15 trillion shortfall in global infrastructure financing by 2040
E) Sharing of Space Data:
• Quad countries will share satellite data for peaceful purposes such as monitoring climate change, disaster response and preparedness, sustainable uses of oceans and marine resources.
• They will also consult on rules, norms, guidelines and principles for ensuring the sustainable use of outer space.
F) Quad Green Shipping Network:
• Quad Shipping Task Force has been launched to establish two to three Quad low-emission or zero-emission shipping corridors by 2030.
G) Quad Open RAN Forum:
• Open RAN has been deployed in 35 countries on a pilot or commercial basis already, including in Australia, India, Japan and the U.S.
• Open RAN (radio access network) facilitates sharing of data via secure and trusted communication network infrastructure among countries.
• The Quad Open RAN Forum will bring together government and industry leaders for the first time to discuss existing Open RAN deployments, the security of Open RAN networks, and how the transition to Open RAN will promote competition, security, and technological neutrality in the telecoms ecosystem.

      • The facility will be provided on ‘InstaOD’ platform of ICICI Bank.
  4. The revamped quarterly employment survey (QES) for the months April-June has been released by Ministry of Labour and Employment.
      • As per the survey, the estimated total employment in the nine selected sectors from the first round of QES was 3 crore, a growth rate of 29% from a total of 2.3 crore reported in the sixth economic census (EC).
      • The census covered the period of January, 2013 to April, 2014.
      • Nearly 90% of the establishments have been estimated to work with less than 100 workers, this figure 95% in the sixth Economic Census (EC).
      • The over-all participation of female workers stood at 29%, slightly lower than 31% reported during 6th EC.
      • Regular workers constitute 88% of the estimated workforce across the nine selected sectors.
  5. Facebook has announced to create the ‘METAVERSE’ – a digital world where people can use different devices to move and communicate in a virtual environment.
      • Facebook will invest $50 million to partner with organizations to build the Metaverse.
      • Facebook’s has partnered with Seoul National University and the University of Hong Kong to research safety, ethics and responsible design.
      • Facebook’s has also partnered with Howard University in Washington D.C. to research on how to shape opportunity in the metaverse.
